    Screening of endophytes from rubber trees (hevea brasiliensis) for biological control of Corticium salmonicolor

    28 leaves and living-tissue samples of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) were collected from Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Phuoc province and Binh Duong province (Viet Nam). We isolated and screened endophytes that have potential application as agents for biocontrol of Corticium salmonicolor, the agent of Pink Disease in rubber trees. As a result, 21 strains of endophytic bacteria and 14 strains of endophytic fungi were isolated. Antagonistic activity of the endophytes towards C. salmonicolor was checked by using a dual culture. Testing results showed that: T9, T15 and T16 strains have inhibited C. salmonicolor. T9 and T16 strains showed result that 100% of inhibiting C. salmonicolor at the concentration of 1:1. In the test of ability to kill C. salmonicolor, T9 and T16 strains showed that they could kill C. salmonicolor after 3 sprays of bacterial filtrate. T9 and T6 strains, which were identified by biochemical methods, have similar characteristics to Bacillus thuringiensis

    Prognostic Values of Serum Lactate-to-Bicarbonate Ratio and Lactate for Predicting 28-Day IN-Hospital Mortality in Children With Dengue Shock Syndrome

    This study aimed to assess the clinical utility of blood lactate-to-bicarbonate (L/B) ratio, as a prognostic factor for 28-day in-hospital mortality in children with dengue shock syndrome (DSS), admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). This single-center retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary children hospital in southern Vietnam from 2013 to mid-2022. Prognostic models for DSS mortality were developed, using a predefined set of covariates in the first 24 hours of PICU admission. Area under the curves (AUCs), multivariable logistic and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regressions, bootstrapping and calibration slope were performed. A total of 492 children with DSS and complete clinical and biomarker data were included in the analysis, and 26 (5.3%) patients died. The predictive values for DSS mortality, regarding lactate showing AUC 0.876 (95% CI, 0.807-0.944), and that of L/B ratio 0.867 (95% CI, 0.80-0.934) (P values of both biomarkers \u3c .001). The optimal cutoff point of the L/B ratio was 0.25, while that of lactate was 4.2 mmol/L. The multivariable model showed significant clinical predictors of DSS fatality including severe bleeding, cumulative amount of fluid infused and vasoactive-inotropic score (\u3e30) in the first 24 hours of PICU admission. Combined with the identified clinical predictors, the L/B ratio yielded higher prognostic values (odds ratio [OR] = 8.66, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.96-38.3; P \u3c .01) than the lactate-based model (OR = 1.35, 95% CI, 1.15-1.58; P \u3c .001). Both the L/B and lactate models showed similarly good performances. Considering that the L/B ratio has a better prognostic value than the lactate model, it may be considered a potential prognostic biomarker in clinical use for predicting 28-day mortality in PICU-admitted children with DSS

    TextANIMAR: Text-based 3D Animal Fine-Grained Retrieval

    3D object retrieval is an important yet challenging task, which has drawn more and more attention in recent years. While existing approaches have made strides in addressing this issue, they are often limited to restricted settings such as image and sketch queries, which are often unfriendly interactions for common users. In order to overcome these limitations, this paper presents a novel SHREC challenge track focusing on text-based fine-grained retrieval of 3D animal models. Unlike previous SHREC challenge tracks, the proposed task is considerably more challenging, requiring participants to develop innovative approaches to tackle the problem of text-based retrieval. Despite the increased difficulty, we believe that this task has the potential to drive useful applications in practice and facilitate more intuitive interactions with 3D objects. Five groups participated in our competition, submitting a total of 114 runs. While the results obtained in our competition are satisfactory, we note that the challenges presented by this task are far from being fully solved. As such, we provide insights into potential areas for future research and improvements. We believe that we can help push the boundaries of 3D object retrieval and facilitate more user-friendly interactions via vision-language technologies.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2304.0573

    Spatiotemporal Variability of Hot Days in Association with the Large-Scale Atmospheric Drivers over Vietnam

    The severe heatwaves and hot spells in Vietnam were observed more frequently in intensity and duration due to global warming and climate change impacts. The hot days and extreme summer events make the weather harsh and significantly affect human health and the environment. This study presents the spatiotemporal distribution of the number of hot days (NHDs) in Vietnam. The variability of NHD in seven climate subregions is also examined in association with the large-scale drivers. The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis version 5 (ERA5) data for the period 1981–2020 are used. Principal component analysis is also applied to the observed monthly NHD to obtain spatial patterns and time series. The results show that the NHD in the Highland and South subregions from March to May is linked with the subtropical high associated with decreased 500hPa-level vertical velocity (VV500). From May to June, the North and Central subregions seem related to deepening the Asiatic low and enhancement of southwest flows across the Indochina Peninsula. Finally, both increased southwest flows and decreased VV500 can partly contribute to the intensification of NHD in the North and Central subregions during July and August. The long trends of NHD are also examined. The results reveal that the increasing trends in NHD occur in most subregions, except for the Central Highland, and changing trends of NHD in June greatly contribute to the annual trend of NHD. Finally, the examinations with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation events show that NHD is significantly higher in El Niño events than in La Niña events in March and April for the Northwest, South Central, Central Highlands, and South, in May and June for all subregions, and in July and August for only the Red River Delta subregion. This suggests that ENSO can provide the potential for improving seasonal climate forecasts and mitigating natural disaster risks for the community

    Vietnamese Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris) has long been recognized as one of the most valuable traditional Chinese medicines. In this study, adenosine was extracted from Vietnamese C. militaris by ultrasound-assisted enzymatic extraction method (UAEE) using water as a solvent. Then, the effects of five single factors on adenosine content including pH, enzyme-to-material ratio, ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and ultrasonic temperature were determined. After that, three factors consisting of ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and ultrasonic temperature were chosen based on their effects on adenosine content. The simultaneous influence of these factors on the adenosine content was investigated by response surface method using central composite design. The adenosine content was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography method. Under the optimal conditions, the extract was evaluated for antioxidant and anticancer bioactivities. In addition, different extraction methods including aqueous extraction (AE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) methods were carried out to compare with UAEE. As a result, it can be concluded that UAEE is a promising method for adenosine extraction and further studies regarding isolation and purification need to be conducted

    Supercritical Fluid Extraction of Polyphenols from Vietnamese Callisia fragrans Leaves and Antioxidant Activity of the Extract

    Vietnamese Callisia fragrans (C. fragrans) has been considered as a valuable traditional plant with various medicinal properties. In this study, polyphenols were extracted from Vietnamese C. fragrans leaves by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction method using ethanol as a cosolvent. The investigation of four factors influencing the total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of the extracts obtained from each single-factor experiment was conducted including ethanol concentration, CO2 flow rate, extraction temperature, and pressure. Besides, the extraction efficiency of the SC-CO2 method under the best extraction conditions, namely ethanol concentration of 14%, CO2 flow rate of 20 g/min, extraction temperature of 45°C, and pressure of 200 bar was compared to that of the Soxhlet extraction (SE) method in terms of the TPC and antioxidant activity of the extracts. The results showed that using SC-CO2 method, the TPC and the half-maximal inhibitory concentration value obtained were of 87.42 ± 1.33 mg/g and 243.83 ± 5.30 μM TE/g, respectively, with much less time and solvent amount required while that obtained using SE method were of 85.34 ± 4.27 mg/g and 236.33 ± 7.66 μM TE/g, respectively. This indicated that SC-CO2 would be suitable for the industrial production of polyphenols with high antioxidant activity of the extracts obtained due to the restrictions of using the SE method and advantages of applying SC-CO2 method. Therefore, SC-CO2 method could be regarded as a potentially upcoming extraction technique which might be employed to replace the conventional SE method

    Bexarotene Does Not Clear Amyloid Beta Plaques but Delays Fibril Growth: Molecular Mechanisms

    In 2012, it was reported that anticancer drug bexarotene reduced amyloid plaque and improved mental functioning in a small sample of mice engineered to exhibit Alzheimer’s like symptoms. It has been suggested that bexarotene stimulates expression of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) leading to intracellular clearance of amyloid beta (Aβ). However, the effect of bexarotene on clearance of plaques has not been seen in some mouse models. Two interesting questions include whether bexarotene can destroy Aβ fibrils via direct interaction with them and how this compound impacts the lag phase in the fibril growth process. By the Thioflavin T fluorescence assay and atomic force microscopy, we have shown that bexarotene prolongs the lag phase, but it does not degrade Aβ fibrils. The impotence of bexarotene in destroying fibrils means that this compound is weakly bound to Aβ. On the other hand, the weak binding would prevent bexarotene from prolonging the lag phase. Thus, our two main in vitro observations seem to contradict each other. In order to settle this problem at the atomic level, we have performed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations in explicit water. We have demonstrated that bexarotene is not capable to reduce amyloid deposits due to weak binding to Aβ fibrils. However, it delays the self-assembly through reduction of the β-content of Aβ monomers at high enough ligand concentrations. Bexarotene is the first compound which displays such an unusual behavior.     The protective effects of young pomelo fruits extract against acute hyperlipidemia and high-fat diet-induced obese mice

    Introduction: Pomelo (柚 in Mandarin) (Citrus grandis L. Osbeck), a long-used fruit in Asia and China, is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Pomelo is also a culturally significant fruit tree in Vietnam, renowned for its culinary and medicinal value. Young pomelo fruits possess high levels of flavonoids, but their research significance remains limited. Due to its relatively unknown potential, young pomelo is usually discarded during gardening maintenance leading to waste. This study aims to determine the naringin content and investigate the ameliorative effect on lipid profile of young pomelo extracts. Methods: Two mouse models of hyperlipidemia, specifically tyloxapol and a high-fat diet (HFD) model, were utilized to assess the effects of young pomelo extracts. Tyloxapol decreases the clearance of lipoprotein and leads to acute endogenous hyperlipidemia, while a high fat diet causes obesity among mice. The hypolipidemic effect of young pomelo extract was assessed through the level of serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), while its ameliorative effect was assessed through physical changes of mice and histological changes of their livers. Results: In the tyloxapol model, the naringin-rich young pomelo extracts exhibited promising effects in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. Notably, they significantly reduced total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-c levels while elevating HDL-c levels. In the HFD model, the young pomelo extracts demonstrated similar effects on the biochemical lipid profiles. Moreover, the young pomelo extracts possess a protective effect against HFD-induced hepatosteatosis and hepatic necroinflammation. These findings align with existing literature, highlighting the potential utilization of young pomelo fruits. Discussion: The findings have significant implications for the development of novel therapeutic approaches targeting obesity and related metabolic disorders. Furthermore, the study contributes to promoting sustainable agriculture practices by emphasizing the utilization of young pomelo fruits that would otherwise go to waste. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into establishing a high-fat diet-induced obesity model, tyloxapol-induced hyperlipidemia and demonstrates the potential of young pomelo as a rich source of naringin

    A new aldehyde compound from the fruit of <i>Pandanus tectorius</i> Parkinson ex Du Roi

    <div><p>From the fruit of <i>Pandanus tectorius</i> Parkinson ex Du Roi, one new (<b>1</b>) and six known aldehyde compounds (<b>2</b>–<b>7</b>) were isolated by various chromatography methods. Based on their spectroscopic data, these compounds were identified as (<i>Z</i>)-4-hydroxy-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl) benzaldehyde (<b>1</b>), <i>p</i>-hydroxybenzaldehyde (<b>2</b>), syringaldehyde (<b>3</b>), (<i>E</i>)-ferulaldehyde (<b>4</b>), (<i>E</i>)-sinapinaldehyde (<b>5</b>), vanillin (<b>6</b>) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfual (<b>7</b>). The α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of all compounds was measured. The isolated compounds (<b>1–6</b>) showed better α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (IC<sub>50</sub> values ranging from 36.5 to 192.4 μM) than the standard drug acarbose (IC<sub>50</sub> = 214.5 μM).</p></div
