Background: No consensus is present among the clinicians regarding the use of post-operative antibiotics after the open reduction and internal fixation. This study evaluates the efficacy of short-term (48 hrs) versus long-term (5 days) post-operative antibiotics in preventing infection rates after the open reduction and internal fixation in mandible fractures. Methods: A total of 80 patients of dentate mandibular fractures were divided randomly in 2 groups; Group 1 received post-operative intravenous antibiotics (amoxicillin+clavulanate 1.2 g+ metronidazole 0.5 g/100 cc) TDS for 48 hrs post-operatively Group 2 received same course for 5 post-operative days and patient were monitored for the signs of infection according to the centers for disease control and prevention criteria, rise in white blood cells counts and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Side effects were recorded in both groups. Results: Out of 39 patients in Group 1 two patients showed rise in CRP levels and single patient developed abscess, whereas in Group 2 wound dehiscence was noted in 2 patients and both had prolonged rise in CRP levels at the 5th day. Conclusions: No significant difference in post-operative infection rates was seen between two groups which suggests short-term post-operative antibiotic treatment is equally efficacious as long-term treatment

This paper focuses on the application of solar energy along with microcontrollers to design and run a motor to pump water from various sources. The solar water pump is one of the applications or appliance that perform task with the use of solar radiation. The solar water pump consists of solar PV array, solar pump, inverter, AC water pumping device etc. Solar energy radiation is converted in electrical current or power source which is then used to run a pump and draw water directly from ground, wells, rivers, lakes etc. In this paper, the relationship between flow rate of the water and luminous intensity of the solar irradiance is studied and the data are linearly fitted to find out the correlation between these parameters. Also the study about efficiency of the solar powered water pump shows that the operation of this type of pumping system is quite efficient than other types of fossil fuel engines like diesel, petrol, kerosene etc. in long run. The use of Arduino Uno, flow sensor, LDR sensors in the solar powered water pump helps to analyze the relation between these parameters and know the conditions favorable for excess supply of water in short time efficiently. These solar powered devices are the future of clean and green future of this world. Thus it is not only necessary but also compulsory to enhance the usage of solar energy throughout the globe

Indians have great knowledge of phytomedicines. This valuable knowledge has been conserved in the living folk traditions in ethnic communities.  An attempt has been made to explore traditional medicinal knowledge of plant materials, available in forest villages of Goregaon and Deori forest range of Gondia district, Maharashtra state. Gondia is one of the prominently categorized districts with maximum tribal population in Maharashtra which includes mostly Gond, Gowari, Halbi, Manah tribes with great numbers. In this study we documented about 49 plant species of various families which are commonly used by the tribal people to cure some common diseases viz. Dysentery, acute headache, toothache and carries, urinary troubles, skin diseases, antidote against snake bite, vomiting and many more. Ethnobotanical information were gathered through several visits, group discussions and cross checked with traditional medical practitioner of the study area

High Vibration Problem Resolution in Centrifugal Pump through Design Change

Case StudyCase Study 4: The case study is about single stage API BB2 pump. Pump operates at the temperature of 355 degree C (671 degree F), rated for pumping 442 m3/hr of Hydro-treated VGO (Vacuum Gas Oil) and is driven by a steam turbine. Pump bearing housing at Drive End (DE) side started exhibiting intermittent high vibrations during commissioning phase. This resulted in repeated failure of DE bearing and damage to bearing housing. Root cause was analyzed as uneven expansion of pump casing during pump warm-up, which misaligns the DE side floating bearing within bearing housing and restrict its axial displacement (bearing used is of deep groove design). As a consequence, thermal growth of pump shaft was restricted and it was rotating in deflected shape, rubbing within throat bushes. Problem was resolved by replacing the bearing design with NU type Cylindrical roller bearing, which allows higher amount of axial displacement. This case highlights a balanced approach towards the site investigations, root cause analysis and corrective actions implementation. It also provides hints to address thermal growths issues when equipment operates at very high temperature

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to assess the perception and beliefs of dental healthcare providers towards usage of different type of gloves. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed among a total of 241 participants out of which 198 participants (77 interns, 58 dental post-graduate students (PG) and 63 dental faculty members) returned completed questionnaire (response rate of 82.15%). The questionnaire comprised of questions on dental professionals’ preferences for certain types of gloves and the reasons for these preferences, as well as determining their knowledge, beliefs and behavior concerning the use of dental gloves as a means of barrier protection. Results: Dental faculty members had a better knowledge regarding use of gloves as compared to dental PG students and interns. Most of the study participants preferred certain types of gloves for the purpose of better protection followed by comfort. Most of the participants believed that gloves provide full protection as long as there is no visible tear (interns 70.1%; PG students 50%; faculty members 60.3%). Most of the interns (42.9%) and PG students (41.4%) did not know about the fact that petroleum based products affect the integrity of the gloves. 2.6% interns, 29.3% PG students and 20.6% faculty members reported that they would not change gloves during an uninterrupted three-hour long procedure. Conclusion: Most of the interns and PG students had poor knowledge regarding usage of gloves which calls for an action on the part of educators to educate and train dental professionals regarding proper infection control practices

Improving a Transhumance Livestock System of India with Modern Technologies

Traditional livestock rearing systems in grasslands evolved in response to social, climatic, vegetative and technological conditions that existed scores, hundreds, or in some cases up to a thousand of years ago. Many of these systems involve vertical transhumance where flocks and herds are moved up elevation gradients for summer pasturage or horizontal transhumance in which livestock migrate across greater distances in response to regional rainfall patterns and the resulting availability of forage. In spite of the relatively low earnings of individual herders, these pastoral systems can contribute substantially to the national economies, while providing sustenance and food security to significant portions of the population. Additionally, traditional livestock rearing often contributes a rich social culture in regions where it is practiced and many societies closely identify with traditional livestock herding lifestyles. In many parts of the world herders still use traditional transhumance systems but they are coming under increased pressure from a number of forces such as social, economic (globalization) and political both within and external to these societies. Yet, many rural people living at or near the subsistence level still rely heavily on small flocks or herds that migrate for their livelihoods. These traditional pastoral or agro pastoral systems and the people that use them have an opportunity to employ modern technologies to change and improve with developing technologies. We studied the Indian Raika (Dewasi/Rebari) horizontal transhumance system of sheep and cattle from their home villages in western Rajasthan to the regions of Haryana and Delhi. During this project we attempted to understand the constraints to production, techniques that could increase animal health and family income of herders. One of the main goals of the project was to also identify programmatic opportunities whereby information at the national or international level could be used to improve sustainability and efficiency of movement from one grazing location to another
