INTEGRATED PRODUCTION FOR OIL REFINERIES AND PETROCHEMICAL PLANTS

    Get PDF
In an increasingly globalised commodity market and under continually changing economic scenarios, oil, gas and petrochemical plants are forced to improve their operation practices in order to remain competitive. One strategy that can be adopted is to exploit the synergy between oil refineries and petrochemical plants through the strategy of integrated production. In this work, issues of integrated production strategy with respect to profitability, implementation and flexibility are explored. Profitability is the key motivation for any plant to change its operation practices. Three options for the strategy of integrated production are considered: integration of final products, integration of intermediate products, and integration of processing units. Decisions are made on the allocation of material resources, the distribution of products and the operating conditions of process units. These decisions are optimised for maximum profit while satisfying all production constraints. In the integrated production of an oil refinery and a petrochemical plant, propylene, naphtha, gasoil and pygas are selected for integration. The benefits of the integrated production strategy are lower costs and higher profits to the integrated plants. Systematic implementation of integrated production strategy is carried out by evaluating the necessary condition and generating an interaction model to bridge information flow between the two plants. Sensitivity analysis is used to evaluate the necessary condition for integrated production. The interaction model regulates the required information !low between the two plants and screens for options of integrated production network. Flexibility of integrated production plan is studied by varying demands and prices of exchanged materials. For an integrated production plant to be flexible, it has to remain feasible even when these parameters change. Flexibility analysis allows steps to be carried out at an early stage to ensure feasibility of the integrated production plan. All integrated production planning problems are formulated as nonlinear programming problem (NLP) and solved using the modular sequential optimisation approach. Case studies are performed to demonstrate how the three issues are addressed

Carbon emission reduction targeting through process integration and fuel switching with mathematical modeling

    Get PDF
Carbon emission reduction targeting is an important and effective effort for industry to contribute in controlling greenhouse gases concentration in atmosphere. Graphical approach has been proposed for CO2 emissions reduction targeting via HEN retrofit and fuel switching. However, it involves potentially time consuming manual procedures and the quality of solutions produced greatly depends on designer's experience and judgment. Besides, graphical approach hardly account for the cost factor during the design phase, thus potentially generate complex design. This paper introduces an MINLP model for simultaneous CO2 emissions reduction targeting via fuel switching and HEN retrofit. A sequential model execution was proposed along with the proposed model. The application of the model on a crude preheat train case study has demonstrated its workability to generate optimal solution for targeted CO2 emissions reduction at minimum payback period

This thesis work concerns with an experimental and computer simulation studies used to develop suitable models to predict and control the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emitted from the Yanmar L60AE-D single cylinder direct injection diesel engine, fitted in a Cusson's Engine Test Bed Model P8160. Today, diesel engine is the most efficient power plant among all known types of internal combustion engines. However, the NOx contained in the exhaust gases of diesel engines have been identified as elements responsible for polluting our atmosphere and causing health problems. In order to reduce diesel engine polluting emissions, two applications based on artificial neural network models have been developed. The first application is to obtain the prediction model of NOx emission concentration under various operating condition

Tensile Strength and Failure Characteristics of Common Roof Truss Joints

Timber joints have always been the weak link in timber construction. Although the load carrying capacity of the timber structure is greater than the applied load, the structural system can fail if the joints are weak. Finger jointing of short off-cut timbers for structural purposes like lightweight roof trusses is an economical method to minimise wastage and to increase recovery rate. The objective of this research was to evaluate the strength and failure characteristics of truss joints made from solid and finger jointed kempas (Koompassia malaccensis) with metal plate connectors. This research assessed the strength properties of truss joints comprising solid and finger-jointed kempas which were jointed with nail plate connectors. The influence of the location of finger joints in the joint system on both the strength and failure characteristics were also studied. Eight joint types, each having ten replications were tested for joint strengths and failure modes. The type of jOint were solid butt-joint (S8), solid T -joint (ST), finger jointed butt-joint type 1 (FB1), finger jointed butt-joint type 2 (FB2) and finger jOinted butt-joint type 3 (FB3), finger jointed T -joint type 1 (FT1), finger jointed T -joint type 2 (FT2) and finger jointed T-joint type 3 (FT3)

Hydraulic fracturing has been proposed as one of the stimulation technique to economically increase oil/gas production. The design of hydraulic fracturing must take into account various parameters, considerations and complicated calculations. Therefore the project entitled “Development of the Mathematical Model for Hydraulic Fracturing Design” has been proposed. The objective of this project was to develop a mathematical model that could determine the calculation of important parameters involved in the design of hydraulic fracturing and to run several case studies to verify and validate the mathematical model. Mathematical model for hydraulic fracturing design was developed using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). In this report, literature review was done which covers the theory and general overview of hydraulic fracturing; the history of hydraulic fracturing, process of hydraulic fracturing as well as hydraulic fracturing design parameters. Research was also done on hydraulic fracturing calculations and equations involve in its design. Project methodology and activities have been developed and the milestones for this project have been planned for Final Year Project 1 and Final Year Project 2. The Gantt Chart and key milestones for FYP I and FYP II were attached in the report in order to make sure that the project run smoothly according to its plan and schedule. Mathematical model for hydraulic fracturing design was completely developed. Case studies were conducted to verify and validate the mathematical model. Mathematical model verifications for hydraulic fracturing design have established a range of 0 to 2.6% of percentage differences between the calculated values in the model and manual hand calculation while mathematical model validation have established a range of 0 to 17% of percentage differences between the calculated values and the field data values
