    Two-Particle Schroedinger Equation Animations of Wavepacket-Wavepacket Scattering (revised)

    A simple and explicit technique for the numerical solution of the two-particle, time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation is assembled and tested. The technique can handle interparticle potentials that are arbitrary functions of the coordinates of each particle, arbitrary initial and boundary conditions, and multi-dimensional equations.     From Fossils to Living Canids:Two Contrasting Perspectives on Biogeographic Diversification

    he Canidae are an ecologically important group of dog-like carnivores that arose in North America and spread across the planet around 10 million years ago. The current distribution patterns of species, coupled with their phylogenetic structure, suggest that Canidae diversification may have occurred at varying rates across different biogeographic areas. However, such extant-only analyses undervalued the group’s rich fossil history because of a limitation in method’s development. Current State-dependent Speciation and Extinction (SSE) models are (i) often parameter-rich which hinders reliable application to relatively small clades such as the Caninae (the only extant subclade of the Canidae consisting of 36 extant species); and (ii) often assume as possible states only the states that extant species present. Here we extend the SSE method SecSSE to apply to phylogenies with extinct species as well (111 Caninae species) and compare the results to those of analyses with the extant-species-only phylogeny. The results on the extant-species tree suggest that distinct diversification patterns are related to geographic areas, but the results on the complete tree do not support this conclusion. Furthermore, our extant-species analysis yielded an unrealistically low estimate of the extinction rate. These contrasting findings suggest that information from extinct species is different from information from extant species. A possible explanation for our results is that extinct species may have characteristics (causing their extinction), which may be different from the characteristics of extant species that caused them to be extant. Hence, we conclude that differences in biogeographic areas probably did not contribute much to the variation in diversification rates in Caninae

    Batchsize and topological criteria: a combined approach to safely optimize hazardous polymerization processes

    Small and medium chemical enterprises are widely diffused in Italy. Particularly, they operate batch and semi-batch processes working on job orders and making a massive use of multipurpose reactors having an Emergency Relief System (ERS) already installed. A batchsize approach is a method focused on finding the reactor fill level that can lead to a single phase vapor flow whether an external fire occurs, so that the installed ERS can protect the reactor from overpressures. In this work, such an approach has been revised, by choosing a runaway reaction as design incidental scenario, and integrated with a suitable optimization procedure based on topological criteria. The new batchsize approach allows for computing a reactor fill level which is much more reasonable for industrial applications with respect to that one predicted by the older method, while the topological approach permits to identify the minimum dosing time capable of guaranteeing both reactor safety and high productivity. Theoretical results have been experimentally validated using data obtained by reaction calorimetry experiments, carried out in an isoperibolic RC1 equipment (1 L, Mettler Toledo), implementing the relevant case study of the solution homopolymerization of butyl acrylate

    Iatrogenic ocular surface diseases occurring during and/or after different treatments for ocular tumours

    The ocular surface represents a finely regulated system that allows the protection of the eye. It is particularly susceptible to different treatments for intraocular tumours, such as uveal melanoma and conjunctival cancers. Traditionally, the management of ocular tumours depends on the characteristics of the lesion, and is based on a combination of selective surgery, topical chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy delivered through different mechanisms (e.g., charged-particle radiotherapy or brachy-therapy). Possible complications involving the ocular surface range from transient dry eye disease or keratitis up to corneal melting and perforation, which in any case deserve careful evaluation for the risk of permanent sigh-threatening complications. Clinicians involved in the management of these patients must be aware of this risk, in order to reach an early diagnosis and promptly set up an adequate treatment. The present review of the literature will summarize acute and chronic complications affecting the ocular surface following different therapies for the treatment of ocular tumours

    One step minilaparotomy-assisted transmesenteric portal vein recanalization combined with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt placement: A novel surgical proposal in pediatrics

    Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement is a standard procedure for the treatment of portal hypertension complications. When this conventional approach is not feasible, alternative procedures for systemic diversion of portal blood have been proposed. A one-step interventional approach, combining minilaparotomy-assisted transmesenteric (MAT) antegrade portal recanalization and TIPS, is described in an adolescent with recurrent esophageal varice bleeding and portal cavernoma (PC). A 16-year-old girl was admitted to our Unit because of repeated bleeding episodes over a short period of time due to esophageal varices in the context of a PC. A portal vein recanalization through an ileocolic vein isolation with the MAT approach followed by TIPS during the same session was performed. In the case of failed portal recanalization, this approach, would also be useful for varice endovascular embolization. Postoperative recovery was uneventful. Treatment consisting of propanolol, enoxaparin and a proton pump inhibitor was prescribed after the procedure. One month post-op, contrast enhanced computed tomography confirmed the patency of the portal and intrahepatic stent grafts. No residual peritoneal fluid was detected nor opacification of the large varices. Endoscopy showed good improvement of the varices. Doppler ultrasound confirmed the accelerated flow in the portal stent and hepatopetal flow inside the intrahepatic portal branches. Three months post-op, TIPS maintained its hourglass shape despite a slight expansion. Portal hypertension and life threatening conditions related to PC would benefit from one-step portal recanalization. MAT-TIPS is feasible and safe for the treatment of PC even in children. This minimally invasive procedure avoids or delays surgical treatment or re-transplantation when necessary in pediatric patients

    Counteracting the Common Shwachman–Diamond Syndrome-Causing SBDS c.258+2T>C Mutation by RNA Therapeutics and Base/Prime Editing

    Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) represents one of the most common inherited bone marrow failure syndromes and is mainly caused by SBDS gene mutations. Only supportive treatments are available, with hematopoietic cell transplantation required when marrow failure occurs. Among all causative mutations, the SBDS c.258+2T>C variant at the 5 ' splice site (ss) of exon 2 is one of the most frequent. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying aberrant SBDS splicing and showed that SBDS exon 2 is dense in splicing regulatory elements and cryptic splice sites, complicating proper 5 ' ss selection. Studies ex vivo and in vitro demonstrated that the mutation alters splicing, but it is also compatible with tiny amounts of correct transcripts, which would explain the survival of SDS patients. Moreover, for the first time for SDS, we explored a panel of correction approaches at the RNA and DNA levels and provided experimental evidence that the mutation effect can be partially counteracted by engineered U1snRNA, trans-splicing, and base/prime editors, ultimately leading to correctly spliced transcripts (from barely detectable to 2.5-5.5%). Among them, we propose DNA editors that, by stably reverting the mutation and potentially conferring positive selection to bone-marrow cells, could lead to the development of an innovative SDS therapy

    Vitamin A and its derivaties (retinoids) are necessary for the maintenance of normal phenotypic expression. An attempt at understanding the biochemical role of vitamin A had led to the demonstration of a new pathway for retinol. In this pathway, vitamin A is phosphorylated to retinylphosphate (RP), which is then glycosylated to retinylphosphatemannose (MRP). These two derivatives have been found in a variety of tissues in vivo and in vitro and appear to be ubiquitous components of cellular membranes. The suggestion has been made that MRP may mediate specific cellular interactions by functioning as a lipid intermediate in the biosynthesis of specific glycoconjugates. A study on spontaneously-transformed mouse fibroblasts (Balb/c 3T12-3 cells) has shown that retinoids are active in increasing the adhesive properties of these cells as measured in an EDTA-mediated detachment assay. Various retinoids were tested for their activity in the adhesion test, and this activity was found to correlate well with their biological activity in maintaining the expression of normal epithelial differentiation in other systems. Retinoic acid, 5,6-epoxyretinol, and 5,6-epoxyretinoic acid were the most active compounds. Retinoids without biological activity in other systems were also inactive in inducihg adhesive properties of 3T12-3 cells. Among these were the synthetic derivatives of retinol, anhydroretinol, and 4,5-monoeneperhydroretinol, and the phenyl derivative of retinoic acid. Beta-Ionone, abscisic acid, and juvenile hormone, which are devoid of vitamin A activity in other systems, were also inactive in this system. Retinoid-induced changes in cell surface proteins were investigated but no difference in 125I-fibronectin (MW 220,000) was detectable between retinoid-treated and untreated cells. However, these cells synthesized retinylphosphatemannose and the incorporation of 2-3H-mannose into a specific glycoprotein (gp 180) was found to be enhanced specifically by retinoid treatment.
