Trends in the French commercial farm population
Knowledge and projection of farm numbers and the structure of their population is an important issue for agricultural economists and policy makers. Although Markov chain models have enjoyed decades of popularity in forecasting total farm numbers, they generally fail to provide a detailed insight of the farm population’s structure; to overcome this caveat we estimate a parametric distribution of the utilized agricultural area of French commercial farms. Our method provides detailed information on the structure of the population and accounts for the specificity of off-land farming. We also model the influence of variables such as the farm’s legal status, type of farming and farm holder’s age. The estimation leads to a relevant description of the entire population of professional farm. When compared with the 2005 Farm Structure Survey data, our simulations based on FADN data display a close match across a number of key variables.farm structures, farm size distribution, maximum likelihood and simulation

L’impact de la réforme de 1990 sur les décisions de départ à la retraite des exploitants agricoles français
We examine the effects of the French government’s 1990 reform for the farming sector on individuals’ retirement behavior. This reform has induced different changes in the Social Security Wealth of farmers living in different rural areas, and thus provided a natural experiment framework. Therefore, we can use this reform to study the impact of Social Security on retirement decisions using French individual data. Our results show that the retirement decisions of farmers are influenced by the changes induced by the 1990 reform.Farm household , Program evaluation , Retirement policy
Relative Poverty and Living Conditions in France
The French population has risen steadily in the recent period. The labour force participation rate is relatively low. Unemployment has remained at around the 10% level since the early 1990s. Urbanisation has risen steadily. Frances average standard of living is one of the highest in the world. France is more inegalitarian than the North European countries, but less so than Great Britain. Although monetary poverty affects just over one in ten households, nearly one-third of these households find life hard. In France poverty is multifaceted: low monetary resources, problems balancing the budget and poor living conditions concern poor populations that are different. The households hit by all three forms of poverty are generally made up of individuals with a low level of education who are more likely to be unemployed. Lone parent families and single people, especially single men, are the most vulnerable, as are households with health problems.Multiple Dimensions of Poverty, Living Standard, France
Poverty and Exclusion in Poland
Poland had one of the fastest population growth rates in Europe through to the mid-1980s. This trend turned around in the 1990s with the result that the population decreased for the first time in 1999. The country has become extremely urbanised. Income inequality has risen. Monetary poverty affects essentially large families and young households, and is rife mainly in the countryside. Some 9% of households and nearly 18% of children under fourteen are affected. Country dwellers, farmers and single men are also more likely to suffer from poor living conditions whereas problems with balancing the budget are found more frequently in the towns. Social exclusion defines another disadvantaged population category. There is a correlation, albeit weak, between poverty and exclusion: family bonds are strong in Poland, which could ease certain effects of poverty, except possibly among unskilled unemployed individuals who tend to suffer from an accumulation of handicaps.Multiple Dimensions of Poverty, Socialist Country in Transition, Poland
