Rank Two Sheaves on K3 Surfaces: A Special Construction

Let X be a K3 surface of degree 8 in P^5 with hyperplane section H. We associate to it another K3 surface M which is a double cover of P^2 ramified on a sextic curve C. In the generic case when X is smooth and a complete intersection of three quadrics, there is a natural correspondence between M and the moduli space M' of rank two vector bundles on X with Chern classes c_1=H and c_2=4. We build on previous work of Mukai and others, giving conditions and examples where M' is fine, compact, non-empty; and birational or isomorphic to M. We also present an explicit calculation of the Fourier-Mukai transform when X contains a line and has Picard number two.Comment: Fixed various minor errors and reworked some argument

Malaria continues to be a major public health issue in Pakistan, due to socioeconomic and epidemiological reasons. The thesis aimed to assess current scenario related to rational drug use, knowledge, perceptions and adherence of prescribers with standard treatment guidelines for malaria in public and private healthcare facilities in two cities of Pakistan; Islamabad (national capital) and Rawalpindi (twin city). A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods were used for data collection. The perceptions’ of malaria control program officials, prescribers and hospital pharmacists regarding factors affecting rational treatment practices for malaria were explored by conducting semi-structured interviews. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw the sample of public and private tertiary (n = 20), secondary (n = 10), primary (n = 20) healthcare facilities and community pharmacies from Islamabad (n = 118) and Rawalpindi (n=120) respectively. Besides that, a sample of 360 prescribers was selected randomly from the two cities (n = 180 each city). Prescribing practices were evaluated by assessing prescriptions for malaria using WHO prescribing indicator form while a structured questionnaire was used to assess the perceptions and knowledge of prescribers regarding standard treatment guidelines. United State Agency for International Development (USAID) stock out form and questionnaire were use to review drug availability and process of drug management respectively. Simulated visits were also performed to observe disease case management of malaria at community pharmacies

A Checklist of Birds of Prey of Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Adjacent Areas

Wildlife is declining worldwide due to loss of habitat, pollution, introduction of exotic species, climatic changes etc. Birds of prey are believed to be rapidly declining in Pakistan though no reliable recent data is available and the available literature suggests its previous wide distribution throughout Pakistan. This current study was carried out in the Rawalpindi, Islamabad and some adjacent areas (latitude N 33o27.34-33o48.05 longitude E 72o59.34-73o27.30) to make a checklist of previously and newly existing prey birds as well as to study their general behaviors and biology. Targeted areas were studied at different times of day in different seasons of the year. After identification of prey birds through photographs taken during the study, presence and absence of prey birds was also recorded. Some species, which were formerly not reported in region, were also identified and the relative abundance among different species was calculated

Dynamics in Educational Outcomes by Gender: Evidence from Pakistan

Abstract. There is strong empirical evidence that show females as a marginalized group in many aspect within Pakistan with its education sector being no different. However it is extremely important not only to document this fact but to analyze how such tendencies are evolving over time within society. This paper is an attempt in this direction, whereby in our analysis not only we assess how different are female and male population in terms of their current enrollment and attained education patterns but also in terms of structure of change in their attainment distribution as we move from older towards younger cohorts. Our findings show though gender should remain an important policy concern in domain of education sector given the prominent discrepancies in current enrolment and attained schooling estimates within male and female population, however distributional analysis of attainment patterns over age cohorts show that there is definitely some evidence of structural shifts in terms of changing economic constraints and social norms within Pakistan. This can be inferred from evidence that show much stronger inclination of higher education in younger cohorts within female attainment distribution.Keywords. ROLE OF COMMUNITY PHARMACIST AND NUTRITIONISTS IN OBESITY MANAGEMENT: A LITERATURE REVIEW

    Get PDF
The idea of engaging community pharmacists and nutritionists in weight management services has been well accepted by the community, as both can help to improve behavior and knowledge regarding obesity among obese patients. The aim of this study is to summarize research findings from developed and developing countries as well as from Pakistan regarding role of community pharmacists and nutritionists in obesity management. A total of 38 studies were reviewed regarding trends in obesity management. The review concluded that the role of community pharmacists and nutritionists in obesity management is not well acknowledged in most of the developing countries including Pakistan. Limited data are available on a number of nutritionists and type of services provided by them for weight management in these countries. There is urgent need to identify the barriers and gaps to further enhance the effectiveness of obesity management. Beside this intervention studies involving multi-disciplinary health- care professionals must be designed to control current obesity crisis worldwide. Keywords: Community pharmacists, Counseling, Nutritionists, Obesity, Weight management program
