Association between body condition score and live weight in pasture-based Holstein-Friesian dairy cows
peer-reviewedThe objective was to quantify the strength of the relationship between body condition score (BCS) and live weight (LW) in pasture-based Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle, and to determine the kg LW per unit BCS. A total of 26021 test-day records with information on both BCS (1â10 scale, where 1 is emaciated and 10 is obese) and LW across 1110 lactations from one research farm were used in the analysis. Correlation and regression analyses were used to determine the degree of association between BCS and LW in different parities, stages of the inter-calving interval and years. Correlations between BCS and LW were relatively consistent, with the mean correlation between BCS and LW across all data of 0·55 implying that differences in BCS explain approximately 30% of the variation in LW. Significantly different regressions of LW on BCS were present within stage of inter-calving interval by parity subclasses. Excluding calving, LW per unit BCS varied from 17 kg (early to mid lactation in parity 1) to 36 kg (early lactation in parity 4 and 5). However, LW per unit BCS was greatest at calving varying from 44 kg in first parity animals to 62 kg in second parity animals. On average, 1 BCS unit equated to 31 kg LW across all data
Collective excitations in double-layer quantum Hall systems
We study the collective excitation spectra of double-layer quantum-Hall
systems using the single mode approximation. The double-layer in-phase density
excitations are similar to those of a single-layer system. For out-of-phase
density excitations, however, both inter-Landau-level and intra-Landau-level
double-layer modes have finite dipole oscillator strengths. The oscillator
strengths at long wavelengths for the latter transitions are shifted upward by
interactions by identical amounts proportional to the interlayer Coulomb
coupling. The intra-Landau-level out-of-phase mode has a gap when the ground
state is incompressible except in the presence of spontaneous inter-layer
coherence. We compare our results with predictions based on the
Chern-Simons-Landau-Ginzburg theory for double-layer quantum Hall systems.Comment: RevTeX, 21 page
Sommerfeld's image method in the calculation of van der Waals forces
We show how the image method can be used together with a recent method
developed by C. Eberlein and R. Zietal to obtain the dispersive van der Waals
interaction between an atom and a perfectly conducting surface of arbitrary
shape. We discuss in detail the case of an atom and a semi- infinite conducting
plane. In order to employ the above procedure to this problem it is necessary
to use the ingenious image method introduced by Sommerfeld more than one
century ago, which is a generalization of the standard procedure. Finally, we
briefly discuss other interesting situations that can also be treated by the

Interaction-Enhanced Coherence Between Two-Dimensional Dirac Layers
We estimate the strength of interaction-enhanced coherence between two
graphene or topological insulator surface-state layers by solving
imaginary-axis gap equations in the random phase approximation. Using a
self-consistent treatment of dynamic screening of Coulomb interactions in the
gapped phase, we show that the excitonic gap can reach values on the order of
the Fermi energy at strong interactions. The gap is discontinuous as a function
of interlayer separation and effective fine structure constant, revealing a
first order phase transition between effectively incoherent and interlayer
coherent phases. To achieve the regime of strong coherence the interlayer
separation must be smaller than the Fermi wavelength, and the extrinsic
screening of the medium embedding the Dirac layers must be negligible. In the
case of a graphene double-layer we comment on the supportive role of the remote
-bands neglected in the two-band Dirac model.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
Comparing expedient and proactive approaches to the planning of protected area networks on Borneo
Protected areas are an important tool for wildlife conservation; however, research is increasingly revealing both biases and inadequacies in the global protected area network. One common criticism is that protected areas are frequently located in remote, high-elevation regions, which may face fewer threats compared to more accessible locations. To explore the conservation implications of this issue, we consider a thought experiment with seven different counterfactual scenarios for the Sunda clouded leopardâs conservation on Borneo. This allows us to examine two contrasting paradigms for conservation: âproactive conservationâ which prioritises areas with high biodiversity and high risk of development, and âexpedient conservationâ which focusses on areas with the lowest development risk. We select clouded leopards as our focal species not only because of their emerging conservation importance, but also because, as top predators, they represent both keystone species and ambassadors for wider forest biodiversity. Furthermore, a published analysis of the likely impacts of forest loss in their habitat provides a benchmark for evaluating the modelled outcomes of alternative hypothetical conservation scenarios. We find that, across all metrics, expedient reserve design offered few benefits over the business-as-usual scenario, in contrast to the much greater conservation effectiveness of proactive protected area design. This paper sheds light on the challenging trade-offs between conservation goals and the competing land uses essential for the economic development and well-being of local communities
Spin wave dispersion in La2CuO4
We calculate the antiferromagnetic spin wave dispersion in the half-filled
Hubbard model for a two-dimensional square lattice and find it to be in
excellent agreement with recent high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering
performed on La2CuO4 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5377 (2001)].Comment: typos correcte
Home accidents amongst elderly people: A locality study in Scotland
Aim
The aim of this locality study was to collect information on reported and unreported accidents amongst elderly people living in one locality in Scotland.
Method
Postal Survey- A postal questionnaire was sent to 3,757 men and women aged 65+ years living in one locality. The questionnaire asked respondents to indicate how many accidents they had experienced in the past twelve months, plus to indicate type and location. Information was gathered on living arrangements, ethnicity, gender, age and deprivation. Respondents were asked if they would be willing to take part in an interview study.
Interview Study - One hundred elders who had had at least one accident in the previous twelve months were interviewed.
Results
Postal Survey - Over a third of the respondents in the postal survey reported having had an accident in the previous twelve months. Bumps and drops and falls were the most common type of accident. Most accidents happened in the kitchen. Women reported more falls than men and those living alone reported more accidents than those living with others. Age was associated with the prevalence of accidents, but the association was somewhat curvilinear, with accidents decreasing with age and then increasing again.
Interview Study â Interviewees found it hard to differentiate one accident from another. Considerable reluctance to visit the GP after an accident was noted, with many not attending even for serious accidents. Almost forty percent were âveryâ distressed after their accident, and a quarter reported a loss of confidence. However, most did not worry about accidents. Few thought that their age, health or medications were a cause of their accidents
Correlations in Two-Dimensional Vortex Liquids
We report on a high temperature perturbation expansion study of the
superfluid-density spatial correlation function of a Ginzburg-Landau-model
superconducting film in a magnetic field. We have derived a closed form which
expresses the contribution to the correlation function from each graph of the
perturbation theory in terms of the number of Euler paths around appropriate
subgraphs. We have enumerated all graphs appearing out to 10-th order in the
expansion and have evaluated their contributions to the correlation function.
Low temperature correlation functions, obtained using Pad\'{e} approximants,
are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulation results and show that the
vortex-liquid becomes strongly correlated at temperatures well above the vortex
