Individual exchange rate forecasts and expected fundamentals

This paper suggests that exchange rates are related to economic fundamentals over medium-term horizons, such as a month or longer. We find from a large panel of individual professionals' forecasts that good exchange rate forecasts benefit from the proper understanding of fundamentals, specifically good interest rate forecasts. This relation is robust to individual fixed effects and further controls. Reassuringly, this relation is stronger during obvious fundamental misalignment. This occurs when exchange rates substantially deviate from their PPP values, when interest rate differentials are high and when exchange rates are less influenced by strong momentum. --Exchange Rate Determination,Individual Expectations,Macroeconomic Fundamentals

Phosphorylation of the RB C-terminus regulates condensin II release from chromatin

The retinoblastoma tumor suppressor protein (RB) plays an important role in biological processes such as cell cycle control, DNA damage repair, epigenetic regulation, and genome stability. The canonical model of RB regulation is that cyclin-CDKs phosphorylate and render RB inactive in late G1/S, promoting entry into S phase. Recently, monophosphorylated RB species were described to have distinct cell-cycle-independent functions, suggesting that a phosphorylation code dictates diversity of RB function. However, a biologically relevant, functional role of RB phosphorylation at non-CDK sites has remained elusive. Here, we investigated S838/T841 dual phosphorylation, its upstream stimulus, and downstream functional output. We found that mimicking T-cell receptor activation in Jurkat leukemia cells induced sequential activation of downstream kinases including p38 MAPK and RB S838/ T841 phosphorylation. This signaling pathway disrupts RB and condensin II interaction with chromatin. Using cells expressing a WT or S838A/T841A mutant RB fragment, we present evidence that deficiency for this phosphorylation event prevents condensin II release from chromatin

Transcatheter Electrical Ablation of Accessory Pathways in Children

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), the most common sustained symptomatic arrhythmia of childhood, is often supported hy a manifest or concealed accessory pathway. Permanent interruption of the accessory pathway usually requires surgical division. Recent experience with electrical ablation of posterior septal pathways in adults prompted us to apply the technique to children. Six children, ages 8 to 15 years, underwent a complete electrophysiological study followed by transcatheter electrical ablation. Five of the 6 children, 3 with a right posterior septal and 2 with a left posterior septal pathway, were approached with the ablation catheter at the os of the coronary sinus. In the remaining patient, a left lateral pathway was mapped with an electrode catheter in the coronary sinus and then approached with the ablation catheter through the patent foramen into the left atrium. Two patients are asymptomatic 18–24 months postabla-tion; one patient had return of anomalous conduction between 7 and 21 days after ablation. Two patients had transient interruption of anomalous conduction, whereas one patient experienced no effect. We conclude that in carefully selected patients, transcatheter electrical ablation ofers an alternative to surgery for permanent interruption of an accessory pathway.
