General Relativity and Gravitation: A Centennial Perspective
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of general relativity, the International
Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (ISGRG) commissioned a Centennial
Volume, edited by the authors of this article. We jointly wrote introductions
to the four Parts of the Volume which are collected here. Our goal is to
provide a bird's eye view of the advances that have been made especially during
the last 35 years, i.e., since the publication of volumes commemorating
Einstein's 100th birthday. The article also serves as a brief preview of the 12
invited chapters that contain in-depth reviews of these advances. The volume
will be published by Cambridge University Press and released in June 2015 at a
Centennial conference sponsored by ISGRG and the Topical Group of Gravitation

Local freedom in the gravitational field revisited
Maartens {\it et al.}\@ gave a covariant characterization, in a 1+3 formalism
based on a perfect fluid's velocity, of the parts of the first derivatives of
the curvature tensor in general relativity which are ``locally free'', i.e. not
pointwise determined by the fluid energy momentum and its derivative. The full
decomposition of independent curvature derivative components given in earlier
work on the spinor approach to the equivalence problem enables analogous
general results to be stated for any order: the independent matter terms can
also be characterized. Explicit relations between the two sets of results are
obtained. The 24 Maartens {\it et al.} locally free data are shown to
correspond to the quantities in the spinor approach, and the
fluid terms are similarly related to the remaining 16 independent quantities in

Narrative Machines: A Ludological approach to Narrative Design
In this chapter, we discuss the design of games as narrative machines â mechanical systems that create narrative experiences. The role of narrative in games has been a hotly discussed topic in Game Studies, and indeed there are many ways that play and story can come together, from static scripts authored by the designer to improvised scenes freely role-played by players. We wish to address a middle-ground of particular interest to boardgame design: the emergent narratives that result from the interaction between the players and the rules.
We argue for the deployment of systemic narrative â stories that are the result of carefully designed systems and which employ emergent play as a viable design tool, based on a close analysis by Malcolm Ryan (the lead author). We outline an approach that Ryan calls narrative-driven design, in which the designer begins by analysing the desired narrative as if it were a game being played. We ask ourselves: âWho are the players in this scene? What actions are available to them? What are their incentives? What conflict are they experiencing?â When this is understood, we can begin to recreate the same situation through the mechanics of our game
Stationary axisymmetric exteriors for perturbations of isolated bodies in general relativity, to second order
Perturbed stationary axisymmetric isolated bodies, e.g. stars, represented by
a matter-filled interior and an asymptotically flat vacuum exterior joined at a
surface where the Darmois matching conditions are satisfied, are considered.
The initial state is assumed to be static. The perturbations of the matching
conditions are derived and used as boundary conditions for the perturbed Ernst
equations in the exterior region. The perturbations are calculated to second
order. The boundary conditions are overdetermined: necessary and sufficient
conditions for their compatibility are derived. The special case of

Timing, Duration, and Pathways of Harlequin Duck Migration to Pacific Molting and Wintering Areas
The core breeding range for Harlequin Ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) in western North America extends from Alaska, and south through the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia. Smaller breeding populations exist in southwestern Alberta, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. Each state and province in these areas has identified the Harlequin Duck as a species of conservation priority, given its small and isolated populations, its specific nesting requirements, and changes in abundance or distribution. Conservation objectives for all areas have identified the importance of mapping migration routes that connect breeding sites to Pacific coast molting and wintering locations, as well as determining migration timing, duration, habitat use, and stopover sites. In spring 2016, we captured Harlequin Duck pairs on breeding streams and surgically implanted satellite transmitters in the males and attached geolocators to the leg bands of females. We marked 18 harlequin pairs (Alberta = 10 (minus one female), Montana = 5, Wyoming = 2, Washington = 1). Migration initiation dates varied by breeding areas and occurred from June 3 to July 10. Male migration lasted between 1-17 days and stopovers occurred approximately half-way to the coast and included rivers, mountain streams, and lakes. They arrived at their molting areas between June 5-July 24 and these areas ranged from southeast Alaska to northwestern Washington. The majority (71%) of harlequins departed molt locations to differing winter locations. Efforts will be made to retrieve the geolocators from females in spring 2017 to compare locations between males and females from different devices
Uniqueness of the mass in the radiating regime
The usual approaches to the definition of energy give an ambiguous result for
the energy of fields in the radiating regime. We show that for a massless
scalar field in Minkowski space-time the definition may be rendered unambiguous
by adding the requirement that the energy cannot increase in retarded time. We
present a similar theorem for the gravitational field, proved elsewhere, which
establishes that the Trautman-Bondi energy is the unique (up to a
multiplicative factor) functional, within a natural class, which is monotonic
in time for all solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations admitting a smooth

Causality and the speed of sound
A usual causal requirement on a viable theory of matter is that the speed of
sound be at most the speed of light. In view of various recent papers querying
this limit, the question is revisited here. We point to various issues

Historical Tropical Forest Reliance amongst the Wanniyalaeto (Vedda) of Sri Lanka: an Isotopic Perspective.
Headland and Bailey (1991) argued in Human Ecology that tropical forests could not support long-term human foraging in the absence of agriculture. Part of their thesis was based on the fact that supposedly isolated 'forest' foragers, such as the Wanniyalaeto (or Vedda) peoples of Sri Lanka, could be demonstrated to be enmeshed within historical trade networks and rely on crops as part of their overall subsistence. Yet, in the same volume and in the years that followed scholars have presented ethnographic and archaeological evidence, including from Sri Lanka, that counter this proposition, demonstrating the occupation and exploitation of tropical rainforest environments back to 38,000 years ago (ka) in this part of the world. However, archaeological and ethnohistorical research has yet to quantify the overall reliance of human foragers on tropical forest resources through time. Here, we report stable carbon and oxygen isotope data from historical Wanniyalaeto individuals from Sri Lanka, in full collaboration with the present-day members of this group, that suggest that while a number of individuals made use of agricultural resources in the recent past, others subsisted primarily on tropical forest resources as late as the 1800s.Max Planck Society
