    Strategy for the sustainability of medical career staff

    Foundation: teacher´s development is one of the most important issues in schools. Behind any significant improvement underlies the professorship activity. Objective: to design a strategy to assure the sustainability of the medical career staff. Methods: pedagogical research realized at the Faculty of Medical Sciences Cienfuegos. The System of Evaluation and Certification of University Careers and the Medicine Syllabus were analyzed to diagnose the current situation of the staff; trends and regularities were identified in the process of self-evaluation and external evaluation to specify and characterize the constituting features. A documentary review was done, so as interviews and surveys to professors, the ranking method for prioritizing the identified problems and the specialist criteria for validating the strategy. Result: The strategy consists of four stages: diagnosis of the current situation of the staff, conceptualization of the constituting features statement of the actions to develop, construction of indicators and evaluation. Each stage includes objectives, indicators, evaluation criteria, and actions for each criterion, degree of attainment, levels of performance, execution deadlines and organizations implied. Th validation showed agreement in its relevance, novelty, viability and the possibility it offers of integrating the direction and organization levels for methodological work. Conclusion: the strategy designed constitutes a guide so that each process direction level designs and develops its own strategy that allows the sustainability of the medical career staff and the continuous quality development

    Deciding on a university degree is undoubtedly a difficult choice. This situation brings about fear of failing and disappointing yourself and others, which is a common feeling among high school students, becoming a source of anxiety and stress. This demonstrates the need for an appropriate vocational and professional guidance. In Cuba, this subject is gaining importance, since a greater number of youngsters have the opportunity to choose from more professions; thus, deciding on one or the other is a problem of great practical and social impact. Vocational guidance and training in the Cuban educational context aims to reaffirm the inclination of youth towards medical studies, where they fully develop their potential, on the basis of consolidating values and feelings, and a high social, moral and unconditional commitment to the practice of the profession.     Foundation: Educative evaluation is the systematic process of obtaining information and using it to offer judgments which will allow making decisions and improving the teaching educative process. University Education requires permanent evaluation to guaranty quality. Objectives: To determine the satisfaction of Cuban graduates from the Medical Major regarding the received training. Methods: A cross section descriptive study was carried out at the Cienfuegos Medical University, from July to November 2016. It was applied a survey of the Higher Education National Crediting Committee to a sample of 62 Cuban graduates from the Medical Major in the academic year 2015-2016. Results: More than 80 % of the surveyed showed their satisfaction regarding the contribution of the Major to the promotion and consolidation of the personal qualities so as the training received for the professional performance and the teaching staff performance. It was observed dissatisfactions in relation to the acquisition of the English language, the Information and Communication Technologies, the assistance of advisors and tutors to develop research. There was also dissatisfactions in with respects to the rehabilitation and treatment competences. Conclusion: There are dissatisfactions in the Medical graduates, more evident in the development of general and specific competences related to the treatment, so as in their raining to perform administrative task which are necessary in their professional performance

    Comportamiento de las intoxicaciones agudas en la unidad de cuidados intensivos pediátricos de Cienfuegos

    Fundamento: Las intoxicaciones agudas representan una importante causa de morbilidad pediátrica. A pesar de ello, este tema no ha sido estudiado en los últimos años en la provincia Cienfuegos. Objetivo: caracterizar los pacientes atendidos por intoxicación aguda en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos del Hospital Pediátrico de Cienfuegos. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo, de los pacientes atendidos por intoxicación aguda desde enero del 2006 hasta diciembre del 2015, en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos de Hospital Pediátrico de Cienfuegos (N=225). Los datos fueron tomados de las historias clínicas. Resultados: se observó mayor número de intoxicaciones agudas en los niños menores de cuatro años, así como las de tipo accidental (54,6 %). Predominó el sexo femenino, para el cual fuero más numerosas las intoxicaciones de origen voluntario. El 40,8 % se produjo por medicamentos, siendo la vía digestiva la más frecuente como entrada del tóxico. El porciento de complicaciones fue bajo. El uso de carbón activado, catárticos y lavado gástrico, fueron los métodos más aplicados en el manejo de los eventos. El mayor número de pacientes fue trasladado de la sala en las primeras 48 horas. Conclusión: los grupos más susceptibles a este tipo de eventos, fueron los niños menores de cuatro años, así como el sexo femenino. El origen accidental fue más frecuente, aunque con particularidades respecto al sexo y la edad

    Fundamento: El Ministerio de Educación Superior ha prestado gran importancia al control del trabajo que desempeñan las instituciones de educación superior, como vía fundamental para lograr un mejoramiento continuo de la calidad. La acreditación es el resultado de la aplicación de un sistema de evaluación interna y externa, dirigido a reconocer públicamente que una institución o programa reúne determinados requisitos de calidad. Objetivo: Exponer una metodología para la autoevaluación de la variable profesores y personal auxiliar, en el contexto de las universidades de Ciencias Médicas. Métodos: Investigación de desarrollo, con diseño cualitativo, enfocada hacia la variable profesores y personal auxiliar, realizada en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Cienfuegos. Se utilizó el criterio de expertos para validar la metodología. Se valoró el nivel de competencia de los expertos mediante la determinación del coeficiente K. Resultados: La metodología propuesta quedó estructurada en dos etapas: la primera, organizativa, donde se determinan áreas y sujetos clave, tareas a desarrollar, diseño de capacitación y cronograma; y la segunda, etapa de implementación. Conclusión: La metodología propuesta ofrece el camino para autoevaluar la variable profesores y personal auxiliar con un enfoque sistémico y en sistema. Fue perfeccionada partiendo de su implementación en la práctica y validada según criterio de expertos

    Actions’ system for continuous improvement in the functioning of disciplinary groups

    Foundation: The conformation and organization of the Higher Education study plans in Cuba demand the constant search for alternatives that make it possible to perfect the methodological work.Objective: develop a system of actions that contributes to improve the function of disciplinary groups.Methods: development research with a materialist dialectical approach, carried out at the Cienfuegos Medical Sciences University in 2022. Methods were applied at the empirical, theoretical and mathematical statistical levels that together allowed the intended objective to be achieved. The proposal was organized into the diagnosis, design and validation stages.Results: identified potentialities and limitations in the functioning of the disciplinary groups in the institution, aspects considered when proposing planning, organization, execution and control actions for continuous improvement, which particularize aspects for those groups that focus on work practice by constitute education at work as a fundamental principle and organizational form in Cuban Medical Education. The validation of the proposal confirmed its value, so implementing it is the challenge to continue betting on the quality of the processes at the university.Conclusions: the proposed actions are derived from the diagnosis carried out and in an integrated manner contribute to achieving greater effectiveness in the direction of that organizational level for the methodological work in the institution and therefore its operat.</p

    Impact of the introduction of the modular written-theoretical examination in the training internship.

    Background: The formative process of teachers has always been a challenge due transformations undergone by educative institution's functions. Objective: To compare the results of modular examinations of two editions of the Professional Course. Methods: A analytic study was carried out to compare theoretical modular examinations results of Professional Course during 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 in which two different kind of test were used: oral and written, in that order. Universe and sample coincided and were represented by the totality of examined students. Data was collected from examination records and results were presented in tables of frequency expressed in percentage. Results: In a general way, quality index of 100% were obtained in every module during 2003-2004, contrary to 2004-2005 were any of the modules achieved 100%. The percentage of excellent marks was considerably higher using oral rather that written examination. The results distribution's curve is closer to the expected results using written examination; the results in municipalities and health areas are similar. Conclusion: The modular written examination allows a better selection of students being more effective in present conditions, with a young staff needing to be prepared

    A Methodological Strategy for the Family Health Course in General Internal Medicine Residency

    <strong>Background:</strong> the continuous improvement of the educational process is one of the permanent challenges of medical education in Cuba. When dealing particularly with family medicine it must be ensured that physicians are always getting a better clinical approach to the management of families, since this is one of the key areas that have been identified as problematic in professional practices. <br /><strong>Objective:</strong> to design a methodological strategy for the improvement of educational activities in the Family Health Course of the General Internal Medicine Residency. <strong><br />Method:</strong> a development research, conducted at the University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos, from November 2005 to January 2007 is presented. Document analysis and validation by expert criteria were also implemented. <br /><strong>Results: </strong>for each of the four themes that make up this course, the following aspects are stated: teaching organization, length, contents, activity objectives, methodological guidelines to implement these activities, assessment proposals for some of them and some literature. <strong><br />Conclusions:</strong> the design of educational activities, with emphasis on actual or simulated medical practice, could help improving the quality of the teaching process. In addition, following the logical structure of activities, teachers can develop similar proposals to address other health problems according to the different learning needs
