Estimating Photometric Redshifts of Quasars via K-nearest Neighbor Approach Based on Large Survey Databases
We apply one of lazy learning methods named k-nearest neighbor algorithm
(kNN) to estimate the photometric redshifts of quasars, based on various
datasets from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky
Survey (UKIDSS) and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) (the SDSS
sample, the SDSS-UKIDSS sample, the SDSS-WISE sample and the SDSS-UKIDSS-WISE
sample). The influence of the k value and different input patterns on the
performance of kNN is discussed. kNN arrives at the best performance when k is
different with a special input pattern for a special dataset. The best result
belongs to the SDSS-UKIDSS-WISE sample. The experimental results show that
generally the more information from more bands, the better performance of
photometric redshift estimation with kNN. The results also demonstrate that kNN
using multiband data can effectively solve the catastrophic failure of
photometric redshift estimation, which is met by many machine learning methods.
By comparing the performance of various methods for photometric redshift
estimation of quasars, kNN based on KD-Tree shows its superiority with the best
accuracy for our case.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A
Detectable MeV neutrinos from black hole neutrino-dominated accretion flows
Neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) around rotating stellar-mass black
holes (BHs) have been theorized as the central engine of relativistic jets
launched in massive star core collapse events or compact star mergers. In this
work, we calculate the electron neutrino/anti-neutrino spectra of NDAFs by
fully taking into account the general relativistic effects, and investigate the
effects of viewing angle, BH spin, and mass accretion rate on the results. We
show that even though a typical NDAF has a neutrino luminosity lower than that
of a typical supernova (SN), it can reach
peaking at MeV, making them potentially detectable with the upcoming
sensitive MeV neutrino detectors if they are close enough to Earth. Based on
the observed GRB event rate in the local universe and requiring that at least 3
neutrinos are detected to claim a detection, we estimate a detection rate up to
(0.10-0.25) per century for GRB-related NDAFs by the Hyper-Kamiokande
(Hyper-K) detector if one neglects neutrino oscillation. If one assumes that
all Type Ib/c SNe have an engine-driven NDAF, the Hyper-K detection rate would
be (1-3) per century. By considering neutrino oscillations, the
detection rate may decrease by a factor of 2-3. Detecting one such event would
establish the observational evidence of NDAFs in the universe.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in PR
Strange sea asymmetry in nucleons
We evaluate the medium effects in nucleon which can induce an asymmetry of
the strange sea. The short-distance effects determined by the weak interaction
can give rise to where is the medium-induced mass of strange quark by a few KeV at
most, but the long-distance effects by strong interaction could be sizable.Comment: 4 pages and no figures, Talk presented at the Third

The H broadband photometric reverberation mapping of four Seyfert 1 galaxies
Broadband photometric reverberation mapping (PRM) have been investigated for
AGNs in recent years, but mostly on accretion disk continuum RM. Due to the
small fraction of broad emission lines in the broadband, PRM for emission lines
is very challenging. Here we present an ICCF-Cut method for broadband PRM to
obtain the H broad line lag and apply it to four Seyfert 1 galaxies,
MCG+08-11-011, NGC 2617, 3C 120 and NGC 5548. All of them have high quality
broadband lightcurves with daily/sub-daily cadence, which enables us to extract
H lightcurves from the line band by subtracting the contributions from
the continuum and host galaxy. Their extracted H lightcurves are
compared with the lagged continuum band lightcurves, as well as the lagged
H lightcurves obtained by spectroscopic RM (SRM) at the same epochs. The
consistency of these lightcurves and the comparison with the SRM H lags
provide supports to the H lags of these AGNs, in a range from 9 to 19
days, obtained by the ICCF-Cut, JAVELIN and methods. The simulations
to evaluate the reliability of H lags and the comparisons between SRM
H and PRM H lags indicate that the consistency of the ICCF-Cut,
JAVELIN and results can ensure the reliability of the derived
H lags. These methods may be used to estimate the broad line region
sizes and black hole masses of a large sample of AGNs in the large multi-epoch
high cadence photometric surveys such as LSST in the future.Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
The ADH1B Arg47His polymorphism in East Asian populations and expansion of rice domestication in history

Abstract

Background

The emergence of agriculture about 10,000 years ago marks a dramatic change in human evolutionary history. The diet shift in agriculture societies might have a great impact on the genetic makeup of Neolithic human populations. The regionally restricted enrichment of the class I alcohol dehydrogenase sequence polymorphism (ADH1BArg47His) in southern China and the adjacent areas suggests Darwinian positive selection on this genetic locus during Neolithic time though the driving force is yet to be disclosed.

Results

We studied a total of 38 populations (2,275 individuals) including Han Chinese, Tibetan and other ethnic populations across China. The geographic distribution of the ADH1B*47His allele in these populations indicates a clear east-to-west cline, and it is dominant in south-eastern populations but rare in Tibetan populations. The molecular dating suggests that the emergence of the ADH1B*47His allele occurred about 10,000~7,000 years ago.

Conclusion

We present genetic evidence of selection on the ADH1BArg47His polymorphism caused by the emergence and expansion of rice domestication in East Asia. The geographic distribution of the ADH1B*47His allele in East Asia is consistent with the unearthed culture relic sites of rice domestication in China. The estimated origin time of ADH1B*47His allele in those populations coincides with the time of origin and expansion of Neolithic agriculture in southern China.</p
Research Progress and Outlook of Food Grade Rice Bran
This paper reviews the nutrition and utilization of rice bran and the future development of food grade rice bran. Rice bran has high nutritional value and rich biological activities. The utilization of rice bran fiber is mainly through modification. The combination of physical and enzymatic methods and supercritical CO2 treatment are beneficial to improve the soluble dietary fiber content and fiber extraction rate. The utilization of rice bran protein includes extraction and modification. The study of extraction of rice bran protein focuses on the combination of physical and enzymatic methods. Moreover, subcritical water, which is a new green extraction technology, has gradually become a research hotspot. The rice bran protein is mainly modified using enzymatic method to improve the function and biological activity of the protein. Therefore, studies on the development of food grade rice bran will be a trend in the future
Research and application of GEP: China’s experience in natural capital accounting
In 2013, for raising the awareness of policymakers and researchers on the economic value of ecosystem services, GEP (Gross Ecosystem Product) was proposed by Chinese scholars. As a new attempt at ecosystem services evaluation, GEP has been widely accepted in China and is often used to reveal the effectiveness of regional ecological protection and the relationship between humans and nature. However, there is currently a lack of a systematic review of GEP research. In this study, we found that: 1) GEP can reflect the overall situation of ecological environment and service quality, and help decision-makers and managers formulate and implement sustainable development strategies and ecological protection policies. 2) The contradiction between the depletion of global ecosystem capital and the development of people’s livelihood continues to intensify. About 68.7% of developing countries are facing a “low-low development (low GEP and low GDP)” model. 3) We have constructed the path model of the GEP working system and the path model of ecological protection compensation mechanism in China. The GEP accounting system of “from point to area, from top to bottom”, the parallel evaluation strategy of GDP and GEP and the comprehensive ecological compensation system of “vertical and horizontal combination” implemented can be popularized to countries all over the world
Chinese herbal injections in combination with radiotherapy for advanced pancreatic cancer: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.
Advanced pancreatic cancer (APC) is a fatal disease with limited treatment options. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different Chinese herbal injections (CHIs) as adjuvants for radiotherapy (RT) in APC and compare their treatment potentials using network meta-analysis. We systematically searched three English and four Chinese databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from inception to July 25, 2023. The primary outcome was the objective response rate (ORR). Secondary outcomes included Karnofsky performance status (KPS) score, overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AEs). The treatment potentials of different CHIs were ranked using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA). The Cochrane RoB 2 tool and CINeMA were used for quality assessment and evidence grading. Eighteen RCTs involving 1199 patients were included. Five CHIs were evaluated. Compound Kushen injection (CKI) combined with RT significantly improved ORR compared to RT alone (RR 1.49, 95 % CrI 1.21-1.86). Kanglaite (KLT) plus RT (RR 1.58, 95 % CrI 1.20-2.16) and CKI plus RT (RR 1.49, 95 % CrI 1.16-1.95) were associated with improved KPS score compared to radiation monotherapy, with KLT+RT being the highest rank (SUCRA 72.28 %). Regarding AEs, CKI plus RT was the most favorable in reducing the incidence of leukopenia (SUCRA 90.37 %) and nausea/vomiting (SUCRA 85.79 %). CKI may be the optimal choice of CHIs to combine with RT for APC as it may improve clinical response, quality of life, and reduce AEs. High-quality trials are necessary to establish a robust body of evidence. PROSPERO, CRD42023396828. [Abstract copyright: © 2023 Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. Published by Elsevier B.V.
