    Maternal mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic in Beijing, China

    Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on breastfeeding women and to identify predictors of maternal mental health and coping. Methods: Mothers aged ≄ 18 years with a breast-fed infant ≀ 18 months of age during the COVID-19 pandemic in Beijing, China, completed a questionnaire. Descriptive analysis of lockdown consequences was performed and predictors of these outcomes were examined using stepwise linear regression. Results: Of 2233 participants, 29.9%, 20.0% and 34.7% felt down, lonely, and worried, respectively, during the lockdown; however, 85.3% felt able to cope. Poorer maternal mental health was predicted by maternal (younger age, higher education) and infant (older age, lower gestation) characteristics, and social circumstances (husband unemployed or working from home, receiving advice from family, having enough space for the baby, living close to a park or green space). Conversely, better maternal mental health was predicted by higher income, employment requiring higher qualifications, more personal space at home, shopping or walking > once/week and lack of impact of COVID-19 on job or income. Mothers with higher education, more bedrooms, fair division of household chores and attending an online mother and baby group > once/week reported better coping. Conclusion: The findings highlight maternal characteristics and circumstances that predict poorer mental health and reduced coping which could be used to target interventions in any future public health emergencies requiring social restrictions

    Quantification of the effects of architectural traits on dry mass production and light interception of tomato canopy under different temperature regimes using a dynamic functional-structural plant model

    There is increasing interest in evaluating the environmental effects on crop architectural traits and yield improvement. However, crop models describing the dynamic changes in canopy structure with environmental conditions and the complex interactions between canopy structure, light interception, and dry mass production are only gradually emerging. Using tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) as a model crop, a dynamic functional-structural plant model (FSPM) was constructed, parameterized, and evaluated to analyse the effects of temperature on architectural traits, which strongly influence canopy light interception and shoot dry mass. The FSPM predicted the organ growth, organ size, and shoot dry mass over time with high accuracy (>85%). Analyses of this FSPM showed that, in comparison with the reference canopy, shoot dry mass may be affected by leaf angle by as much as 20%, leaf curvature by up to 7%, the leaf length: width ratio by up to 5%, internode length by up to 9%, and curvature ratios and leaf arrangement by up to 6%. Tomato canopies at low temperature had higher canopy density and were more clumped due to higher leaf area and shorter internodes. Interestingly, dry mass production and light interception of the clumped canopy were more sensitive to changes in architectural traits. The complex interactions between architectural traits, canopy light interception, dry mass production, and environmental conditions can be studied by the dynamic FSPM, which may serve as a tool for designing a canopy structure which is 'ideal' in a given environment.DFGDF

    R&D investment and future firm performance: The role of managerial overconfidence and government ownership

    We investigate the relationship among managerial overconfidence (MO), government ownership, and research and development (R&D) investment using data from Vietnamese public companies for the period 2007–2016. We also investigate how R&D investment, given MO and government ownership, affect future firm performance. Our results indicate that MO and government ownership are positively related to R&D investment. Conceptually, this study investigates novel factors affecting of R&D investment and their role in improving firm performance. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of R&D investment in the corporate world, improving firm performance and, ultimately, economic prosperity

    Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic K-rich granites in the Phan Si Pan Complex, north Vietnam : constraints on the early crustal evolution of the Yangtze Block

This study was also supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam, Project BĐKH.29/16-20 to Dung My Tran.Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Phan Si Pan Complex, North Vietnam, constitute the southern extension of the Yangtze Block, and provide a valuable record of the early evolution of the continental crust. We present results of U-Pb zircon geochronology and geochemistry for Precambrian granites in this complex to constrain their emplacement age and genesis. Granites from three plutonic bodies yielded ages of 2848 ± 15 Ma, 2768 ± 19 Ma and 1869 ± 30 Ma, which represent newly-recognized late Archean to Paleoproterozoic potassic granite plutonism in the southern Yangtze Block. The average ΔHf(t) values range from −6.2 to 0.1 for the 2.85–2.77 Ga granitic rocks and -13.1 to -9.2 for the ca. 1.86 Ga granitic rocks, with two-stage model ages of 3.64 to 3.20 Ga and 3.31 to 3.07 Ga, respectively, suggesting derivation from partial melting of Paleoarchean and Mesoarchean crust. The late Archean potassic granites exhibit high K2O, and high Sr/Y and (La/Yb)N ratios with negligible Eu anomalies, indicating derivation from melting of the thickened lower crust, which is inferred to have occurred in an active margin setting. The late Paleoproterozoic alkali feldspar granites are characterized by high FeOT/(FeOT + MgO)(0.96–0.99) and 10000∗Ga/Al (2.75–2.94) ratios, showing an affinity of A-type granite. These A-type granites exhibit flat chondrite-normalized HREE patterns and strong negative Eu anomalies, and low Sr/Y and (La/Yb)N ratios, corresponding to melting at a shallow depth, probably in a post-collisional extension setting. Comparison of the rock units and events recorded by the Phan Si Pan complex with other Archean to Paleoproterozoic complexes (Houhe, Dongchuan, Yudongzi, Douling, Zhongxiang and Kongling complexes) in the Yangtze Block indicate spatially distinct histories of crustal growth, and thus may reflect independent terranes. The ca. 1.86 Ga post-collisional magmatism, which succeeds a 2.0–1.9 Ga metamorphic event, is distributed throughout the Yangtze Block, including the Phan Si Pan Complex, suggesting assembly of the disparate terranes and final cratonization of the Yangtze Block overlaps with, and may be related to, assembly of the Nuna supercontinent.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Early Paleoproterozoic magmatism in the Yangtze Block : evidence from zircon U-Pb ages, Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes and geochemistry of ca. 2.3 Ga and 2.1 Ga granitic rocks in the Phan Si Pan Complex, north Vietnam

New, integrated petrographic, zircon U-Pb age and Hf-Nd isotope analyses, and whole-rock geochemical data for early Paleoproterozoic granites in the Phan Si Pan Complex provides new insights into the evolution of the Yangtze Block as well as its role in the Pre-Nuna supercontinent. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating of magmatic zircons from quartz monzonite and gneissic granite yielded 207Pb/206Pb ages of 2306 ± 12 Ma and 2096 ± 15 Ma, respectively. Zircons from the quartz monzonite have ΔHf(t) values ranging from -4.1 to -2.1, corresponding to TDM2 model ages of 3002–2890 Ma, whereas zircons in the gneissic granite have ΔHf(t) values between -0.95 and +1.72 and corresponding TDM2 model ages of 2660–2516 Ma, which are consistent with their whole-rock Nd isotope values. Geochemically, the quartz monzonites are I-type granites. Combined with their relatively high Sr/Y ratios and low Y concentrations, as well as fractionated REE patterns with relatively high LREE but low HREE concentrations, they were probably generated by partial melting of the thickened middle-lower crust under elevated temperature. Geochemical and isotopic signatures suggest that the ca. 2.1 Ga gneissic granites are high-K calc-alkaline, ferroan A-type granites formed by partial melting of juvenile crustal source at high temperature and low pressure with little involvement of ancient crustal material. The Phan Si Pan complex has a distinct early Paleoproterozoic crustal evolution history compared with the other crustal provinces of the Yangtze Block, suggesting independent histories that were not unified until the late Paleoproterozoic during the assembly of Nuna. Moreover, the magmatism and tectonic evolution of the north Vietnam region is broadly similar to that of the Arrowsmith Orogen of the Rae craton in Laurentia suggesting a potential spatial linkage. The geologic record of the Yangtze Block does not support an early Paleoproterozoic shutdown of plate tectonics.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Orange emission in Pr3+-doped fluoroindate glasses

    We synthesize and study the properties of praseodymium doped fluoroindate glasses. Glass compositions with praseodymium molar concentrations up to 5% were obtained with good optical quality. Thermal, optical, and luminescence properties are investigated. Judd–Ofelt analysis is used to determine radiative lifetime and emission cross-section of the orange transition originating from the 3P0 level. We find that these glasses are good candidates for the realization of blue diode laser pumped orange lasers for quantum information processing applications

    Inter-observer agreement according to three methods of evaluating mammographic density and parenchymal pattern in a case control study:impact on relative risk of breast cancer

    BACKGROUND: Mammographic breast density and parenchymal patterns are well-established risk factors for breast cancer. We aimed to report inter-observer agreement on three different subjective ways of assessing mammographic density and parenchymal pattern, and secondarily to examine what potential impact reproducibility has on relative risk estimates of breast cancer. METHODS: This retrospective case–control study included 122 cases and 262 age- and time matched controls (765 breasts) based on a 2007 screening cohort of 14,736 women with negative screening mammograms from Bispebjerg Hospital, Copenhagen. Digitised randomized film-based mammograms were classified independently by two readers according to two radiological visual classifications (BI-RADS and TabĂĄr) and a computerized interactive threshold technique measuring area-based percent mammographic density (denoted PMD). Kappa statistics, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) (equivalent to weighted kappa), Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient and limits-of-agreement analysis were used to evaluate inter-observer agreement. High/low-risk agreement was also determined by defining the following categories as high-risk: BI-RADS’s D3 and D4, TabĂĄr’s PIV and PV and the upper two quartiles (within density range) of PMD. The relative risk of breast cancer was estimated using logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) adjusted for age, which were compared between the two readers. RESULTS: Substantial inter-observer agreement was seen for BI-RADS and TabĂĄr (Îș=0.68 and 0.64) and agreement was almost perfect when ICC was calculated for the ordinal BI-RADS scale (ICC=0.88) and the continuous PMD measure (ICC=0.93). The two readers judged 5% (PMD), 10% (TabĂĄr) and 13% (BI-RADS) of the women to different high/low-risk categories, respectively. Inter-reader variability showed different impact on the relative risk of breast cancer estimated by the two readers on a multiple-category scale, however, not on a high/low-risk scale. TabĂĄr’s pattern IV demonstrated the highest ORs of all density patterns investigated. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows the TabĂĄr classification has comparable inter-observer reproducibility with well tested density methods, and confirms the association between TabĂĄr’s PIV and breast cancer. In spite of comparable high inter-observer agreement for all three methods, impact on ORs for breast cancer seems to differ according to the density scale used. Automated computerized techniques are needed to fully overcome the impact of subjectivity
