    A review of the design philosophy and development of the Apollo command and service modules electrical power distribution subsystem, a brief history of the evolution of the total system, and some of the more significant components within the system are discussed. The electrical power distribution primarily consisted of individual control units, interconnecting units, and associated protective devices. Because each unit within the system operated more or less independently of other units, the discussion of the subsystem proceeds generally in descending order of complexity; the discussion begins with the total system, progresses to the individual units of the system, and concludes with the components within the units

    The experiments reported in this thesis were carried out in the hope that they might assist in the clarification of the role of the endocrine system in the regulation of mammary gland development. A large part of the work was concerned with the elucidation of the general effects of adrenal insufficiency in mice, and with the maintenance of adrenalectomised mice by the injection of cortisol acetate. It is hoped that the results obtained with these mice will be of some assistance in future studies of the endocrine control of the growth of the mammary glands in mice, where it is dersired to exclude any influence mediated by, or originating from the animal's own adrenal cortex. This study w_as prompted by Dr. D.S. Flux, to whom the author is indebted for guidance, encouragement, and patient instruction. The advice of Professor I.L. Campbell, in whose department the work was carried out, and the assistance of Mr D.J. Myers are gratefully acknowledged.     Adenovirus-mediated transfer of a gene encoding acyloxyacyl hydrolase (AOAH) into mice increases tissue and plasma AOAH activity

    Although the host response to gram-negative bacterial infection follows largely from the interactions of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS or endotoxin) with host cells, little information is available concerning the mechanisms by which the host eliminates or detoxifies LPS. Acyloxyacyl hydrolase (AOAH) is an enzyme, found in phagocytic cells, that catalyzes the enzymatic deacylation of the lipid A moiety of LPS. Enzymatically deacylated LPS is much less potent than LPS at inducing responses in human cells, and it can antagonize the ability of LPS to activate human macrophages, neutrophils, and endothelial cells. Despite these observations, the physiologic role of LPS deacylation remains undefined. To investigate the ability of AOAH to carry out LPS deacylation in vivo, we produced a recombinant adenovirus carrying a gene encoding AOAH (Ad.CMV-AOAH) and employed this vector to elicit transient overexpression of AOAH in mice. Mice infected with Ad.CMV-AOAH expressed high levels of the enzyme in plasma, liver, spleen, and kidney. Although adenovirus-induced hepatitis reduced hepatic uptake of intravenously injected [H-3]LPS, animals expressing the transgene deacylated a larger fraction of the [3H]LPS taken up by their livers than did mice infected with a control adenovirus. These studies indicate that AOAH can catalyze the deacylation of LPS in vivo, and they provide evidence that the rates of hepatic LPS uptake and deacylation are not closely linked

    Association between individual level characteristics and take-up of a Minimum Income Guarantee for Pensioners: Panel Data Analysis using data from the British Household Panel survey 1999–2002

    \ua9 2024 The AuthorsA Minimum Income Guarantee (MIG) ensures people have a minimum amount of income for essentials such as healthy food, housing, health care, social and digital networks to support health and well-being. MIGs could be a useful tool to reduce inequalities. A MIG will only be effective if those who are eligible take it up. The aim of this paper is to explore how individual characteristics were associated with take-up of a MIG for pensioners (aged 60+ for women and aged 65+ for men) in England. The data used is from the British Household Panel Survey including 9430 observations from 1893 people, from 1999 to 2002. We estimated a random effects logistic regression. Results show that women were less likely to claim than men (OR ranging from 0.17 [95% CI 0.10–0.29]-0.73 [95% CI 0.40–1.34]), and couples were less likely to claim (OR ranging from 0.04 [95% CI 0.03–0.06]-0.01 [95%CI 0.01–0.02]) than single person households. People with better mental health (OR 1.05 95% CI 1.02–1.08), older pensioners (75+) (OR ranging from 1.98 [95% CI 1.52–2.59]-2.81 [95%CI 2.16–3.67]), those who were registered disabled (OR 4.03 95% CI 2.50–6.52), and those with no formal qualification (OR ranging from 1.74 [95%CI 0.93–3.26]-2.07 [95% CI 1.22–3.51]) were more likely to claim. Understanding who is likely to claim MIGs is important to avoid social security policy inadvertently increasing inequalities

    Multidimensional Gaussian sums arising from distribution of Birkhoff sums in zero entropy dynamical systems

    A duality formula, of the Hardy and Littlewood type for multidimensional Gaussian sums, is proved in order to estimate the asymptotic long time behavior of distribution of Birkhoff sums SnS_n of a sequence generated by a skew product dynamical system on the T2\mathbb{T}^2 torus, with zero Lyapounov exponents. The sequence, taking the values ±1\pm 1, is pairwise independent (but not independent) ergodic sequence with infinite range dependence. The model corresponds to the motion of a particle on an infinite cylinder, hopping backward and forward along its axis, with a transversal acceleration parameter α\alpha. We show that when the parameter α/π\alpha /\pi is rational then all the moments of the normalized sums E((Sn/n)k)E((S_n/\sqrt{n})^k), but the second, are unbounded with respect to n, while for irrational α/π\alpha /\pi, with bounded continuous fraction representation, all these moments are finite and bounded with respect to n.Comment: To be published in J.     Self-assembled dithiothreitol on Au surfaces for biological applications: phospholipid bilayer formation

    Self-assembly of dithiothreitol (DTT) on Au(111) from solution deposition has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical data. DTT molecules self-assemble on Au(111) in a lying-down configuration irrespective of the concentration and temperature. XPS and electrochemical data indicate a DTT surface coverage of y E 0.16 with two S-head–Au covalent bonds per DTT molecule. The DTT monolayer turns the Au surface hydrophilic enough to allow the formation of fluid dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayer domains by vesicle fusion as revealed by "in situ" atomic force imaging.
