    Impact of climate change on agricultural production and food security: a review on coastal regions of Bangladesh

    Bangladesh is severely vulnerable to climate change and its devastation on coastal livelihood and food security has been substantiated. Climate induced hazards will lead to food insecurity directly and indirectly by affecting the coastal biophysical and socioeconomic states. This review article found the potential impacts on coastal agricultural, livestock and fisheries sectors those are the main source of livelihood and food security to coastal people. Furthermore, most of the rural coastal people are hard poor in which women are major in portion and contribute to ensure food security for the entire family. Scrutinizing on ‘vulnerability’ revealed that it is not gender neutral and socio-economically underprivileged groups and marginal people are invaded disproportionately in which women is ranking in the top of the order. Hence, existing gender-poverty nexus along with socio-economic and political aspects make women more endangered to climate vulnerability and food security. It also found that existing policies and adaptation mechanisms failed to address the influence of powers on marginalize women and growing trend of feminization of food insecurity. In addition, also found the necessity for immediate pertinent caucus before the onset of this imminent concernment by aggregating gender and identified vulnerable groups.Int. J. Agril. Res.     Effects of population density on growth and production of Tilapia in monoculture

    The experiment was conducted to determine the effect of population density on growth and production of Tilapia (monosex GIFT tilapia) in monoculture system for a period of 110 days. The experiment was carried out in six earthen ponds, which were situated in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh. The experiment was carried out under three treatments each with two replications. Fish population density was 200 fish per decimal under treatment-I, 400 fish per decimal under treatment-II and 600 fish per decimal under treatment-III. In the ponds supplementary feed of wheat bran and rice bran mixture were used daily at the rate of 46 g, 92 g and 136 g per decimal under treatment-I, II, and III, respectively. The average initial length and weight of tilapia were 4.63 cm and 2.82 g respectively. The ponds were fertilized fortnightly with urea and TSP at the rates of 60 g and 90 g, respectively. During experimental period, the ranges of water temperature (25.82 to 29.80 ºC), transparency (28.00 to 38.00 cm), dissolved oxygen (5.50 to 8.30 mg/L), pH (7.00 to 7.90), total alkalinity (130.00 to 200.00 mg/L), free CO2 (2.00 to 6.00 mg/L), phosphate-phosphorus (1.20 to 2.30 mg/L), and nitrate-nitrogen (3.20 to 4.00 mg/L) were within the productive range and more or less similar in all the ponds under three treatments. There were 25 genera of phytoplankton under five major groups and 10 genera of zooplankton under three major groups in the experimental ponds. Mean survival rate of fish under treatment-I, treatment-II, and treatment-III were 82.75%, 77.12% and 74.33% respectively. The calculated net fish production under treatment-I was 6.75 ton/ha/yr and that of the ponds under treatment-II was 10.26 ton/ha/yr and that of the ponds under treatment-III was 12.15 ton/ha/yr. The net fish production under treatment-II and treatment-III were 152% and 180% higher than that of treatment-I, taking net fish production under treatment-I for 100%. According to profit-cost analysis, the ratios of net profit under treatments I, II, and III were 1:0.44, 1:0.27, and 1:0.09. According to specific growth rate and survival, treatment-I is the best, and according to profit-cost analysis treatment-I (ratio 1:0.44) also the best. So, the population density of 200 fish per decimal (under treatment-I) might be considered the best among the three treatments.Int. J. Agril. Res. Innov. & Tech. 7 (2): 49-56, December, 201

    A novel copper complex induces ROS generation in doxorubicin resistant Ehrlich ascitis carcinoma cells and increases activity of antioxidant enzymes in vital organs in vivo

    BACKGROUND: In search of a suitable GSH-depleting agent, a novel copper complex viz., copper N-(2-hydroxyacetophenone) glycinate (CuNG) has been synthesized, which was initially found to be a potential resistance modifying agent and later found to be an immunomodulator in mice model in different doses. The objective of the present work was to decipher the effect of CuNG on reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and antioxidant enzymes in normal and doxorubicin-resistant Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC/Dox)-bearing Swiss albino mice. METHODS: The effect of CuNG has been studied on ROS generation, multidrug resistance-associated protein1 (MRP1) expression and on activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). RESULTS: CuNG increased ROS generation and reduced MRP1 expression in EAC/Dox cells while only temporarily depleted glutathione (GSH) within 2 h in heart, kidney, liver and lung of EAC/Dox bearing mice, which were restored within 24 h. The level of liver Cu was observed to be inversely proportional to the level of GSH. Moreover, CuNG modulated SOD, CAT and GPx in different organs and thereby reduced oxidative stress. Thus nontoxic dose of CuNG may be utilized to reduce MRP1 expression and thus sensitize EAC/Dox cells to standard chemotherapy. Moreover, CuNG modulated SOD, CAT and and GPx activities to reduce oxidative stress in some vital organs of EAC/Dox bearing mice. CuNG treatment also helped to recover liver and renal function in EAC/Dox bearing mice. CONCLUSION: Based on our studies, we conclude that CuNG may be a promising candidate to sensitize drug resistant cancers in the clinic

    Measurements of B --> D_s^{(*)+} D^{*(*)} Branching Fractions

    This article describes improved measurements by CLEO of the B0Ds+DB^0 \to D_s^+ D^{*-} and B0Ds+DB^0 \to D_s^{*+} D^{*-} branching fractions, and first evidence for the decay B+Ds()+Dˉ0B^+ \to D_s^{(*)+} \bar{D}^{**0}, where Dˉ0\bar{D}^{**0} represents the sum of the Dˉ1(2420)0\bar{D}_1(2420)^0, Dˉ2(2460)0\bar{D}_2^*(2460)^0, and Dˉ1(j=1/2)0\bar{D}_1(j=1/2)^0 L=1 charm meson states. Also reported is the first measurement of the Ds+D_s^{*+} polarization in the decay B0Ds+DB^0 \to D_s^{*+} D^{*-}. A partial reconstruction technique, employing only the fully reconstructed Ds+D_s^+ and slow pion πs\pi_s^- from the DDˉ0πsD^{*-} \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^-_s decay, enhances sensitivity. The observed branching fractions are B(B0Ds+D)=(1.10±0.18±0.10±0.28){\mathcal B} (B^0 \to D_s^+ D^{*-}) = (1.10 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.28)%, B(B0Ds+D)=(1.82±0.37±0.24±0.46){\mathcal B} (B^0 \to D_s^{*+} D^{*-}) = (1.82 \pm 0.37 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.46)%, and B(B+Ds()+Dˉ0)=(2.73±0.78±0.48±0.68){\mathcal B} (B^+ \to D_s^{(*)+} \bar{D}^{**0}) = (2.73 \pm 0.78 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.68)%, where the first error is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty in the Ds+ϕπ+D_s^+ \to \phi \pi^+ branching fraction. The measured Ds+D_s^{*+} longitudinal polarization, ΓL/Γ=(50.6±13.9±3.6)\Gamma_L/\Gamma = (50.6 \pm 13.9 \pm 3.6)%, is consistent with the factorization prediction of 54%.Comment: 26 pages (LaTeX), 15 figures.     Evidence for the Decay D0K+ππ+πD^0\to K^+ \pi^-\pi^+\pi^-

    We present a search for the ``wrong-sign'' decay D0 -> K+ pi- pi+ pi- using 9 fb-1 of e+e- collisions on and just below the Upsilon(4S) resonance. This decay can occur either through a doubly Cabibbo-suppressed process or through mixing to a D0bar followed by a Cabibbo-favored process. Our result for the time-integrated wrong-sign rate relative to the decay D0 -> K- pi+ pi- pi+ is (0.0041 +0.0012-0.0011(stat.) +-0.0004(syst.))x(1.07 +-0.10)(phase space), which has a statistical significance of 3.9 standard deviations.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS, submitted to PR

    Hadronic Mass Moments in Inclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays

    We have measured the first and second moments of the hadronic mass-squared distribution in B -> X_c l nu, for P(lepton) > 1.5 GeV/c. We find <M_X^2 - M_D[Bar]^2> = 0.251 +- 0.066 GeV^2, )^2 > = 0.576 +- 0.170 GeV^4, where M_D[Bar] is the spin-averaged D meson mass. From that first moment and the first moment of the photon energy spectrum in b -> s gamma, we find the HQET parameter lambda_1 (MS[Bar], to order 1/M^3 and beta_0 alpha_s^2) to be -0.24 +- 0.11 GeV^2. Using these first moments and the B semileptonic width, and assuming parton-hadron duality, we obtain |V_cb| = 0.0404 +- 0.0013.Comment: 11 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS, submitted to PR

    Observation of the Ωc0\Omega_{c}^{0} Charmed Baryon at CLEO

    The CLEO experiment at the CESR collider has used 13.7 fb1^{-1} of data to search for the production of the Ωc0\Omega_c^0 (css-ground state) in e+ee^{+}e^{-} collisions at s10.6\sqrt{s} \simeq 10.6 {\rm GeV}. The modes used to study the Ωc0\Omega_c^0 are Ωπ+\Omega^- \pi^+, Ωπ+π0\Omega^- \pi^+ \pi^0, ΞKpi+π+\Xi^- K^- pi^+ \pi^+, Ξ0Kpi+\Xi^0 K^- pi^+, and Ωπ+ππ+\Omega^- \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^+. We observe a signal of 40.4±\pm9.0(stat) events at a mass of 2694.6±\pm2.6(stat)±\pm1.9(syst) {\rm MeV/c2c^2}, for all modes combined.Comment: 10 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Observation of BϕKB\to \phi K and BϕKB\to \phi K^{*}

    We have studied two-body charmless hadronic decays of BB mesons into the final states phi K and phi K^*. Using 9.7 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected with the CLEO II detector, we observe the decays B- -> phi K- and B0 -> phi K*0 with the following branching fractions: BR(B- -> phi K-)=(5.5 +2.1-1.8 +- 0.6) x 10^{-6} and BR(B0 -> phi K*0)=(11.5 +4.5-3.7 +1.8-1.7) x 10^{-6}. We also see evidence for the decays B0 -> phi K0 and B- -> phi K*-. However, since the statistical significance is not overwhelming for these modes we determine upper limits of <12.3 x 10^{-6} and <22.5 x 10^{-6} (90% C.L.) respectively.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Evidence of New States Decaying into Ξcπ\Xi^{\prime}_{c}\pi

    Using 13.7 fb1fb^{-1} of data recorded by the CLEO detector at CESR, we report evidence for two new charmed baryons: one decaying into Ξc0π+\Xi_c^{0 \prime}\pi^+ with the subsequent decay Ξc0Ξc0γ\Xi_c^{0 \prime} \to \Xi_c^0 \gamma, and its isospin partner decaying into Ξc+π\Xi_c^{+ \prime} \pi^- followed by Ξc+Ξc+γ\Xi_c^{+\prime} \to \Xi_c^+\gamma. We measure the following mass differences for the two states: M(Ξc0γπ+)M(Ξc0)M(\Xi_c^0 \gamma \pi^+)-M(\Xi_c^0)=318.2+-1.3+-2.9 MeV, and M(Ξc+γπ)M(Ξc+)M(\Xi_c^+ \gamma \pi^-)-M(\Xi_c^+)=324.0+-1.3+-3.0 MeV. We interpret these new states as the JP=1/2Ξc1J^P = 1/2^- \Xi_{c1} particles, the charmed-strange analogs of the Λc1+(2593)\Lambda_{c1}^+(2593).Comment: 10 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    First Observation of B -> D(*) rho', rho' -> omega pi-

    We report on the observation of B-> D(*) pi+ pi- pi- pi^o decays. The branching ratios for D*+ and D*o are (1.72+/-0.14+/-0.24)% and (1.80+/-0.24+/-0.27)%, respectively. Each final state has a D* omega pi- component, with branching ratios (0.29+/-0.03+/-0.04)% and (0.45+/-0.10+/-0.07)% for the D*+ and D*o modes, respectively. We also observe B -> D omega pi- decays. The branching ratios for D+ and Do are (0.28+/-0.05+/-0.04)% and (0.41+/-0.07+/-0.06)%, respectively. A spin parity analysis of the D omega pi- final state prefers a wide 1^- resonance. A fit to the omega pi- mass spectrum finds a central mass of (1349+/-25^{+10}_{-5}) MeV and width of (547+/-86^{+46}_{-45}) MeV.
