Using Journaling to Aid in Acquisition of Past Tense Verbs

    Get PDF
For many years I have worked with a group of English learners at a local community college as they took on the challenge of learning English. There were some areas that I noted students particularly struggled with, one of them being applying simple past tense verbs, though they seem to have acquired irregular past tense verbs with little difficulty. With this study, I have tried to determine if using dialogue journals could enhance acquisition of simple past tense morphemes. By actively choosing to use simple past tense in my responses to them I was hoping that noticing proper application would help them acquire this skill. Due to a few factors, one of them being a lack of a control group, I was not able to absolutely prove that keeping a dialogue journal assisted students in learning past tense use, though all students demonstrated an improvement in using simple past tense on their posttests. Further study in this area would be beneficial to determine if dialogue journals could be an added benefit to the English language learner curriculum

The Association Between Health Literacy and Diet Adherence Among Primary Care Patients with Hypertension

This study examines the association between health literacy and adherence to low-salt diet practices among individuals with hypertension. Health literacy is the ability of individuals to understand and utilize health information. We surveyed 238 patients with hypertension from a primary care clinic in Charlotte, NC. We assessed health literacy and self-reported low-salt diet. Logistic regression was used to model the relationship between health literacy and low-salt diet adherence. Respondents were primarily female (67.3%) and black (80%). Black Americans were less likely to have adequate health literacy as compared to white Americans (21.8% vs. 55.8%). The study found no association between adequate health literacy and adherence to a low-salt diet (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.36-3.10) after adjusting for confounders. This study addresses the conflicting findings for health literacy in two related areas: chronic illness self-care, and nutrition/diet skills. Additional research is warranted among black Americans given their increased risk of hypertension, low rates of diet adherence and previous findings of positive associations between health literacy and nutrition skills

Growth and Research Productivity on Library Automation: A Bibliometric Analysis

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study examined the research productivity of library automation from 2015-to 2020. The study\u27s objectives were to access the publications based on various parameters such as year-wise distribution, authorship pattern, the total count of citations, most cited publications and the most prolific authors. Methodology: The bibliometric method was applied in the study to analyze the characteristics and trends of papers published on library automation during the years 2015-2020. The data for the study was extracted from Google Scholar by using the bibliometric analysis software “Publish or Perish” and was further analyzed with MS Excel 365. Key Findings: It was found that 342 authors wrote a total of 190 papers during the study period. The results show that the highest number of publications (45) were published in 2019. The single personal authors\u27 pattern was dominant, with 50.52% publications. A total of 355 citations were received by the papers and 118 (33.2%) citations were received in 2017. The paper also highlighted information about the most cited on the topic papers during the study period

Deploying an improvement strategy across a rapidly expanding health system: A framework for repeatability and cost-effectiveness

With nearly 40,000 employees and physicians spread across 14 states, a robust system was needed to engage front line teams at the point of care to meaningfully enhance patient and family communication practices in Prime Healthcare, an award-winning, community hospital system with 45 hospitals. Among its key elements, Prime’s system-wide road map for deploying relationship-centered communication tools involved identification of and investment in frontline champions, education that was synchronized with leader-deployed digital rounding, and online self-reflection modules that promoted true behavior change. This economical and easy-to-follow road map is shared for others seeking a high return on investment from their patient experience efforts. The Big Opportunity: Advancing a Culture of Interprofessionalism

    Get PDF
Historically, education has been siloed by disciplines leaving little room for interprofessional education to take place. Culture within an academic organization determines the strategies, modes of operation, goals, values, and terminal student learning outcomes. Using Kotter’s accelerated change management model, as a worksheet for educational cultural change, is an effective method to break complacency, generate ideas, align people, and overcome resistance to change

Critical Success Factors for Pharmaceutical Firms: The Case of Pakistan

    Get PDF
This study is to investigate the critical success factors for Pakistani pharmaceutical firms. This study conceptualizes knowledge management, image and control as the key indicatorsof critical success factors. This study collects the data from the lower-, middle-, and top-level managers in the pharmaceutical firms in major cities of Pakistan: Lahore, Multan, Islamabad. Thisstudy performs PLS-SEM in analyzing 100 responses obtained through survey forms. Results of the study indicate that knowledge management is the element that gives rise to confession, wage, promotion and the execution of unlike objectives that increase a general exposure of the all stakeholders. It achieves a pleasurable passionate state that frequently prompts a positive organizational performance and competitive advantage. This research puts light on the gaps found in adaptation of critical success factors in Pharmaceutical industry of Pakistan as compared to the developed countries in this sector

Fast, scalable, Bayesian spike identification for multi-electrode arrays

    Get PDF
We present an algorithm to identify individual neural spikes observed on high-density multi-electrode arrays (MEAs). Our method can distinguish large numbers of distinct neural units, even when spikes overlap, and accounts for intrinsic variability of spikes from each unit. As MEAs grow larger, it is important to find spike-identification methods that are scalable, that is, the computational cost of spike fitting should scale well with the number of units observed. Our algorithm accomplishes this goal, and is fast, because it exploits the spatial locality of each unit and the basic biophysics of extracellular signal propagation. Human intervention is minimized and streamlined via a graphical interface. We illustrate our method on data from a mammalian retina preparation and document its performance on simulated data consisting of spikes added to experimentally measured background noise. The algorithm is highly accurate

The Effective Fragment Molecular Orbital Method for Fragments Connected by Covalent Bonds

    Get PDF
We extend the effective fragment molecular orbital method (EFMO) into treating fragments connected by covalent bonds. The accuracy of EFMO is compared to FMO and conventional ab initio electronic structure methods for polypeptides including proteins. Errors in energy for RHF and MP2 are within 2 kcal/mol for neutral polypeptides and 6 kcal/mol for charged polypeptides similar to FMO but obtained two to five times faster. For proteins, the errors are also within a few kcal/mol of the FMO results. We developed both the RHF and MP2 gradient for EFMO. Compared to ab initio, the EFMO optimized structures had an RMSD of 0.40 and 0.44 {\AA} for RHF and MP2, respectively.Comment: Revised manuscrip
