Limits of minimal models and continuous orbifolds

    Get PDF
The lambda=0 't Hooft limit of the 2d W_N minimal models is shown to be equivalent to the singlet sector of a free boson theory, thus paralleling exactly the structure of the free theory in the Klebanov-Polyakov proposal. In 2d, the singlet sector does not describe a consistent theory by itself since the corresponding partition function is not modular invariant. However, it can be interpreted as the untwisted sector of a continuous orbifold, and this point of view suggests that it can be made consistent by adding in the appropriate twisted sectors. We show that these twisted sectors account for the `light states' that were not included in the original 't Hooft limit. We also show that, for the Virasoro minimal models (N=2), the twisted sector of our orbifold agrees precisely with the limit theory of Runkel & Watts. In particular, this implies that our construction satisfies crossing symmetry.Comment: 33 pages; v2: minor improvements and references added, published versio

Primary School Governance: The Perspectives of Head Teachers and Chairs of Governance

    Get PDF
In England over 300,000 school governors serve some 23,000 schools, influence the lives of over 7 million children and oversee a budget in excess of £20 billion per annum. School governors, as unpaid volunteers, are said to have responsibilities and duties that are unprecedented in the voluntary sector. These responsibilities and duties are likely to become even more demanding and complicated as changes in the education system are implemented. Despite this, there has been limited research on primary school governance. The research, presented here, sought to investigate the perspectives of key stakeholders in primary school governance by interviewing the head teachers and chairs of governance of 20 schools. Maximum variation sampling was used to select 20, contextually different, primary schools within ten Local Authorities. The research adopted a qualitative approach - the head teacher and chair of governance of each school were interviewed, during 2011, using a semi-structured schedule to elicit ‘thick descriptions’ about primary school governance. Additional information was obtained from the most recent Ofsted report for each school. Four themes, all related to the research questions, emerged from the literature review. These themes were used to structure the interview schedule, to present the data and in the subsequent discussion and analysis. Findings of this research confirmed that primary school governance is important and that primary school head teachers received invaluable support from their governing body, especially from their chair of governance. Chairs of governance were shown to be committed to their roles and school governance was found to be complex but governors were judged to be capable of doing the job. The concepts of governor capital, agency and amplification were found to be valid and need to be developed further by primary schools. The training of governors was found to be inadequate and there was inequality in information provision for governors. Recruitment of new governors was problematic for some schools in both disadvantaged and affluent areas. Recommendations included that what is required of school governors needs to be clarified by central government and that further training is necessary for this complex rol

    Heterotic strings on G_2 orbifolds

We study compactification of heterotic strings to three dimensions on orbifolds of G_2 holonomy. We consider the standard embedding and show that the gauge group is broken from E_8 x E_8 or SO(32) to F_4 x E_8 or SO(25) respectively. We also compute the spectrum of massless states and compare with the results obtained from reduction of the 10-dimensional fields. Non-standard embeddings are discussed briefly. For type II compactifications we verify that IIB and IIA have equal massless spectrum.Comment: LaTex, 21 page

Alkali Metal Complexes of Phosphine-Borane-Substituted Benzyl Ligands and Their Application in the Synthesis of B-H\ub7\ub7\ub7Sn Stabilized Dialkylstannylenes

\ua9 2024 The Authors. Published by American Chemical Society. The benzyl-substituted phosphine-boranes PhCH2P(BH3)R2 [R = iPr (1H), Ph (2H), Cy (3H)] are accessible through either the reaction between R2PCl and PhCH2MgBr, followed by treatment with BH3\ub7SMe2 or the reaction between R2P(BH)3Li and PhCH2Br. Treatment of 1H, 2H, or 3H with nBuLi, PhCH2Na, or PhCH2K gave the corresponding alkali metal complexes [{iPr2P(BH3)CHPh}Li(THF)]2 (1Li), [{Ph2P(BH3)CHPh}Li(OEt2)2] (2Li), [{Cy2P(BH3)CHPh}Li(TMEDA)] (3Li), [iPr2P(BH3)CHPh]Na (1Na), [{Ph2P(BH3)CHPh}Na(THF)2]2 (2Na), [Cy2P(BH3)CHPh]Na(THF)0.5 (3Na), [{iPr2P(BH3)CHPh}K]∞ (1K), [{Ph2P(BH3)CHPh}K(THF)]∞ (2K), and [{Cy2P(BH3)CHPh}K.0.5PhMe]∞ (3K). X-ray crystallography revealed that, while 2Li and 3Li crystallize as monomers, 1Li and 2Na crystallize as borane-bridged dimers. The potassium complexes 1K, 2K, and 3K all crystallize with polymeric structures, in which the monomer units are linked to each other through a range of both bridging BH3 groups and multihapto interactions between the potassium cations and the aromatic rings. The reactions between two equivalents of either 1Li or 3Li and Cp2Sn gave the corresponding dialkylstannylenes [{R2P(BH3)CHPh}2Sn] [R = iPr (1Sn), Cy (3Sn)]. These compounds were isolated as mixtures of the rac and meso diastereomers. X-ray crystallography reveals that rac-1Sn and rac-3Sn crystallize as discrete monomers each exhibiting two agostic-type B-H\ub7\ub7\ub7Sn contacts

Automation and data processing with the immucor Galileo (R) system in a university blood bank

Background: The implementation of automated techniques improves the workflow and quality of immuno-hematological results. The workflows of our university blood bank were reviewed during the implementation of an automated immunohematological testing system. Methods: Work impact of blood grouping and subgrouping, cross- matching and antibody search using the Immucor Galileo system was compared to the previous used standard manual and semi- automated methods. Results: The redesign of our workflow did not achieve a significant reduction of the specimen's working process time, the operator's time however was reduced by 23%. Corresponding results were achieved for blood grouping, Rhesus typing, antibody screen and for autocontrol when changing from two semi- automated to the Galileo system. Because of the higher sensitivity of the Immucor antibody detection system, the rate of the initial positive antibody screens rose from 4 to 6% Conclusion: The Immucor Galileo system automates routine blood bank testing with high reliability, specificity and higher sensitivity compared to our previous used standard manual and semi- automated methods

    Phytoestrogens

    Get PDF
Collectively, plants contain several different families of natural products among which are compounds with weak estrogenic or antiestrogenic activity toward mammals. These compounds, termed phytoestrogens, include certain isoflavonoids, flavonoids, stilbenes, and lignans. The best-studied dietary phytoestrogens are the soy isoflavones and the flaxseed lignans. Their perceived health beneficial properties extend beyond hormone-dependent breast and prostate cancers and osteoporosis to include cognitive function, cardiovascular disease, immunity and inflammation, and reproduction and fertility. In the future, metabolic engineering of plants could generate novel and exquisitely controlled dietary sources with which to better assess the potential health beneficial effects of phytoestrogens
