    Thermodynamics of a charged relativistic ideal Boltzmann gas

    This paper presents a toy model of a charged relativistic classical gas in flat spacetime of an arbitrary number of dimensions equipped with some ``pair production'' mechanism. Working with the microcanonical ensemble, the charge is taken to be conserved in contrast with the total number of ``particles'' plus ``antiparticles'' which varies with temperature TT. Thermodynamics of the classical gas is detailed studied in the nonrelativistic (Mc2kTMc^{2}\gg kT) as well as in the ultrarelativistic (Mc2kTMc^{2}\ll kT) regimes. It is shown that, although we are dealing with classical distributions, at the ultrarelativistic regime the behavior of the gas is Planckian. We also compare the thermodynamics of the toy model with that of quantum gases.Comment: 10 pages, no figures.     Collaboration networks from a large CV database: dynamics, topology and bonus impact

    Understanding the dynamics of research production and collaboration may reveal better strategies for scientific careers, academic institutions and funding agencies. Here we propose the use of a large and multidisciplinar database of scientific curricula in Brazil, namely, the Lattes Platform, to study patterns of scientific production and collaboration. In this database, detailed information about publications and researchers are made available by themselves so that coauthorship is unambiguous and individuals can be evaluated by scientific productivity, geographical location and field of expertise. Our results show that the collaboration network is growing exponentially for the last three decades, with a distribution of number of collaborators per researcher that approaches a power-law as the network gets older. Moreover, both the distributions of number of collaborators and production per researcher obey power-law behaviors, regardless of the geographical location or field, suggesting that the same universal mechanism might be responsible for network growth and productivity.We also show that the collaboration network under investigation displays a typical assortative mixing behavior, where teeming researchers (i.e., with high degree) tend to collaborate with others alike. Finally, our analysis reveals that the distinctive collaboration profile of researchers awarded with governmental scholarships suggests a strong bonus impact on their productivity.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Possible manifestation of spin fluctuations in the temperature behavior of resistivity in Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4 thin films

    A pronounced step-like (kink) behavior in the temperature dependence of resistivity ρ(T)\rho (T) is observed in the optimally-doped Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4 thin films around Tsf=87KT_{sf}=87K and attributed to manifestation of strong spin fluctuations induced by Sm3+Sm^{3+} moments with the energy ωsf=kBTsf7meV\hbar \omega_{sf}=k_BT_{sf}\simeq 7meV. In addition to fluctuation induced contribution ρsf(T)\rho_{sf}(T) due to thermal broadening effects (of the width ωsf\omega_{sf}), the experimental data are found to be well fitted accounting for residual (zero-temperature) ρres\rho_{res}, electron-phonon ρeph(T)=AT\rho _{e-ph}(T)=AT and electron-electron ρee(T)=BT2\rho_{e-e}(T)=BT^2 contributions. The best fits produced ωp=2.1meV\omega_p=2.1meV, τ01=9.5×1014s1\tau_0^{-1}=9.5\times 10^{-14}s^{-1}, λ=1.2\lambda =1.2, and EF=0.2eVE_F=0.2eV for estimates of the plasmon frequency, the impurity scattering rate, electron-phonon coupling constant, and the Fermi energy, respectively.Comment: 6 pages (REVTEX4), 2 EPS figures; accepted for publication in JETP Letter

    Temperature oscillations of magnetization observed in nanofluid ferromagnetic graphite

    We report on unusual magnetic properties observed in the nanofluid room-temperature ferromagnetic graphite (with an average particle size of l=10nm). More precisely, the measured magnetization exhibits a low-temperature anomaly (attributed to manifestation of finite size effects below the quantum temperature) as well as pronounced temperature oscillations above T=50K (attributed to manifestation of the hard-sphere type pair correlations between ferromagnetic particles in the nanofluid)
