    Reproductive aspects of the flyingfish, Hirundichthys affinis from the Northeastern coastal waters of Brazil

    The epipelagic flyingfish, Hirundichthys affinis is a major artisanal fishery resource from the Northeastern coastal waters of Brazil. However, biological information about this species has been poorly documented. This paper presents data on the length-weight relationship, sex ratio, length at first sexual maturity, gonadal development and fecundity of H. affinis sampled from the coastal waters of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The total body length and weight for both sexes ranged from 23.4 to 29.4 cm and from 89 to 188g, respectively. The allometric coefficient of males was 2.208 and that of females was 2.985, indicating negatively allometric growth. The sex ratio was 1M:1.6F thus differing from the expected ratio of 1:1 (χ2 = 18.63). The total length at first sexual maturity was estimated at 27.3 cm for males and 27.1 cm for females. The macroscopic characteristics of the gonads indicated four maturation stages. Histological studies of gonads of H. affinis showed seven phases of oocyte development and four phases of spermatocyte development. The mean absolute fecundity was 9092 vitelogenic oocytes. Spawning occurred during the months of March to July. The microscopic descriptions of the stages of gonad maturation indicate that the study area is an important spawning ground of H. affinis

    Sex-Differences and Temporal Consistency in Stickleback Fish Boldness

    Behavioural traits that co-vary across contexts or situations often reflect fundamental trade-offs which individuals experience in different contexts (e.g. fitness trade-offs between exploration and predation risk). Since males tend to experience greater variance in reproductive success than females, there may be considerable fitness benefits associated with "bolder" behavioural types, but only recently have researchers begun to consider sex-specific and life-history strategies associated with these. Here we test the hypothesis that male three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) show high risk but potentially high return behaviours compared to females. According to this hypothesis we predicted that male fish would show greater exploration of their environment in a foraging context, and be caught sooner by an experimenter than females. We found that the time fish spent out of cover exploring their environment was correlated over two days, and males spent significantly more time out of cover than females. Also, the order in which fish were net-caught from their holding aquarium by an experimenter prior to experiments was negatively correlated with the time spent out of cover during tests, and males tended to be caught sooner than females. Moreover, we found a positive correlation between the catch number prior to our experiments and nine months after, pointing towards consistent, long-term individual differences in behaviour

    Statistical shape modelling for expression-invariant face analysis and recognition

    Paper introduces a 3-D shape representation scheme for automatic face analysis and identification, and demonstrates its invariance to facial expression. The core of this scheme lies on the combination of statistical shape modelling and non-rigid deformation matching. While the former matches 3-D faces with facial expression, the latter provides a low-dimensional feature vector that controls the deformation of model for matching the shape of new input, thereby enabling robust identification of 3-D faces. The proposed scheme is also able to handle the pose variation without large part of missing data. To assist the establishment of dense point correspondences, a modified freeform-deformation based on B-spline warping is applied with the help of extracted landmarks. The hybrid iterative closest point method is introduced for matching the models and new data. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method was investigated using standard publicly available Gavab and BU-3DFE datasets, which contain faces with expression and pose changes. The performance of the system was compared with that of nine benchmark approaches. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides a competitive solution for face recognition
