    Large scale genome-wide association and LDLA mapping study identifies QTLs for boar taint and related sex steroids

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Boar taint is observed in a high proportion of uncastrated male pigs and is characterized by an unpleasant odor/flavor in cooked meat, primarily caused by elevated levels of androstenone and skatole. Androstenone is a steroid produced in the testis in parallel with biosynthesis of other sex steroids like testosterone and estrogens. This represents a challenge when performing selection against androstenone in breeding programs, without simultaneously decreasing levels of other steroids. The aim of this study was to use high-density genome wide association (GWA) in combination with linkage disequilibrium-linkage analysis (LDLA) to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with boar taint compounds and related sex steroids in commercial Landrace (n = 1,251) and Duroc (n = 918) breeds.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Altogether, 14 genome wide significant (GWS) QTL regions for androstenone in subcutaneous fat were obtained from the LDLA study in Landrace and 14 GWS QTL regions in Duroc. LDLA analysis revealed that 7 of these QTL regions, located on SSC 1, 2, 3, 7 and 15, were obtained in both breeds. All 14 GWS androstenone QTLs in Landrace are also affecting the estrogens at chromosome wise significance (CWS) or GWS levels, while in Duroc, 3 of the 14 QTLs affect androstenone without affecting any of the estrogens. For skatole, 10 and 4 QTLs were GWS in the LDLA analysis for Landrace and Duroc respectively, with 4 of these detected in both breeds. The GWS QTLs for skatole obtained by LDLA are located at SSC 1, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13 and 14.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first report applying the Porcine 60 K SNP array for simultaneous analysis of boar taint compounds and related sex hormones, using both GWA and LDLA approaches. Several QTLs are involved in regulation of androstenone and skatole, and most of the QTLs for androstenone are also affecting the levels of estrogens. Seven QTLs for androstenone were detected in one breed and confirmed in the other, i.e. in an independent sample, although the majority of QTLs are breed specific. Most QTLs for skatole do not negatively affect other sex hormones and should be easier to implement into the breeding scheme.</p

    The Weyl double copy from twistor space

    The Weyl double copy is a procedure for relating exact solutions in biadjoint scalar, gauge and gravity theories, and relates fields in spacetime directly. Where this procedure comes from, and how general it is, have until recently remained mysterious. In this paper, we show how the current form and scope of the Weyl double copy can be derived from a certain procedure in twistor space. The new formalism shows that the Weyl double copy is more general than previously thought, applying in particular to gravity solutions with arbitrary Petrov types. We comment on how to obtain anti-self-dual as well as self-dual fields, and clarify some conceptual issues in the twistor approach

    WOS: 000188761600021The spectral-fluorescent properties of substituted 2- and 4-(N-arylimino)quinolines have been investigated in solvents of different polarity and proton donating ability, and in immobilized phases of PVC films and sol-gel matrix. The effect of the solvent on spectral characteristics has been estimated. It has been shown that, despite the possibility of quenching process linked with intramolecular motions with great amplitude of the non-fixed azomethine fragment, the low fluorescence quantum yield of the studied compounds in polar solvents and in immobilized phases is caused mainly by the quenching process which is not linked directly with significant changes in molecular geometry. The complexation process of the studied ortho-hydroxyphenols with Cu2+ ion caused strong changes in their absorption spectra. Among the studied compounds, 4-chloro-2-[(quinolin-2-yl-methylene)]-amino-phenol has shown better selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu2+. This compound could be suggested as a prospective reagent for spectroscopic determination Of Cu2+ trace amounts (<10(-4) M), e.g. for copper determination in Al-based alloys. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.     Renal artery stenosis and abdominal aorta aneurysm in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome

    PURPOSE: To evaluate the renal arteries and abdominal aorta in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX). DESIGN: Prospective, case–control study. METHODS: The study involved 49 patients with PEX and 42 control subjects. Abdominal aorta and renal arteries were examined by Doppler ultrasonography. In both renal arteries (proximal and distal portions) and abdominal aorta, the peak systolic velocity (PSV) was measured. Renal artery stenosis (RAS) was defined as the renal artery PSV >150 cm/s or renal-to-aortic ratio (RAR) >3.0. Patients who had an abdominal aortic diameter >3 cm were recorded. Computed tomographic angiography was performed to confirm these findings in patients with RAS and/or abdominal aorta aneurysm. RESULTS: The mean PSV in the proximal renal artery was 88.3 cm/s in PEX group and 79.5 cm/s in control group (P=0.314); in distal renal artery was 91.7 cm/s in PEX group and 93.0 cm/s in control group (P=0.794); in abdominal aorta was 76.0 cm/s in PEX group and 65.2 cm/s in control group (P=0.046). RAS was observed in nine patients with PEX and in only one patient without PEX (P=0.017). Seven out of 10 patients with RAS (six patients in PEX group; one patient in control group) had hypertension. Abdominal aorta aneurysm was observed in four patients in PEX group but not in control group (P=0.061). CONCLUSIONS: Our study has demonstrated that there is a significant association between PEX and RAS. The abdominal aorta aneurysm may be seen in patients with PEX
