Suitability of borago officinalis for minimal processing as fresh-cut produce
Borage (Borago offcinalis L.) is a wild vegetable appreciated as a folk medicine and for culinary preparations. The introduction of borage as a specialized cultivation would allow for the diversification of vegetable crops and would widen the offerings of raw and minimally processed leafy vegetables. Thus, the aim of the research was to evaluate the quality and shelf-life of fresh-cut borage stored at different temperatures. Borage plants were grown during the autumn-winter season and immediately minimally processed after harvest. Fresh-cut borage leaves packed in sealed bags were stored at 2 or 6 °C for 21 d. Weight loss, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), ascorbic acid, nitrates, leaf color characteristics and overall quality were determined through the storage period. Borage plants were deemed suitable for minimal processing. Storage temperature significantly influenced the rate of quality loss. Borage leaves had an initial nitrate content of 329.3 mg kg-1 FW that was not affected by temperature or storage. TSS and TA were higher in leaves stored at 6 °C. TSS, TA and ascorbic acid content increased during storage. Minimally processed borage leaves stored at 2 °C had lower weight loss and leaf color modifications during storage and a longer shelf life than those stored at 6 °C, so were still marketable after 21 d of storage
Repair Expenses, Selling Contracts, and House Prices
This paper examines the impact of repair expenses on the selling price of a house. Using data from settlement statements, we investigate the frequency and extent to which performance of major repairs is part of the sales contract. We find that most homes are restored to a "normally maintained" state each time the home changes hands, and that the cost of bringing the home to this condition is included as part of house selling price. This implies it may be unnecessary to measure maintenance levels when using transaction data to study components of house price or to construct house price indexes.
Restructuring Agency Relationships in the Real Estate Brokerage Industry: An Economic Analysis
Recent state legislative reforms of real estate agency relationships suggest that traditional agency law and practice are not meeting the needs of the parties involved in a residential real estate purchase and sales transaction. In this article, we argue that this is due, at least in part, to the bundling of information and representation services provided by brokers. This bundling results in a tradeoff between the benefits of buyers and sellers in sharing information prior to a match, and the cost to the parties individually of revealing information during bargaining. We conclude that, from an economic perspective, effective agency reform must solve this basic conflict, perhaps by unbundling the matching and representation functions.
Machine-learning-based software to group heterogeneous students for online peer assessment activities
Since the academic year 2017/2018, a peer assessment activity was included in the online Genomics laboratory for the masterâs degree course in Biological Sciences of the University of Camerino, with the aim of improving learning outcomes and soft skills in students, such as team building and critical thinking. Creating groups in university courses is not easy because of the large number of students, that leads teachers to realize groups totally randomly, a procedure that is not always effective. One of the factors that influences the success of collaborative learning is the creation of heterogeneous groups based on the studentsâ behaviors. Despite little improvements, the online genomics laboratory highlighted some gaps. Random groups didnât ensure that each group was composed of heterogeneous students, and it leads some students to have a bad perception of the peer review activity, negatively affecting their engagement and motivation. This work proposes a new Machine Learning Approach and the realization of a specific software, able to create effective heterogeneous groups to be involved in the online peer assessment process, in order to improve learning outcomes and satisfaction in the students. The aim is to check the improvement of the peer assessment effectiveness using heterogeneous groups compared to random groups of students. Two editions of the online laboratory of Genomics were analysed, examining the studentsâ results and perceptions to verify the impact of the Machine Learning approach designed in this work
Redshifted X-rays from the material accreting onto TW Hya: evidence of a low-latitude accretion spot
High resolution spectroscopy, providing constraints on plasma motions and
temperatures, is a powerful means to investigate the structure of accretion
streams in CTTS. In particular, the accretion shock region, where the accreting
material is heated to temperatures of a few MK as it continues its inward bulk
motion, can be probed by X-ray spectroscopy. To attempt to detect for the first
time the motion of this X-ray-emitting post-shock material, we searched for a
Doppler shift in the deep Chandra/HETGS observation of the CTTS TW Hya. This
test should unveil the nature of this X-ray emitting plasma component in CTTS,
and constrain the accretion stream geometry. We searched for a Doppler shift in
the X-ray emission from TW Hya with two different methods, by measuring the
position of a selected sample of emission lines, and by fitting the whole TW
Hya X-ray spectrum, allowing the line-of-sight velocity to vary. We found that
the plasma at T~2-4 MK has a line-of-sight velocity of 38.3+/-5.1 km/s with
respect to the stellar photosphere. This result definitively confirms that this
X-ray-emitting material originates in the post-shock region, at the base of the
accretion stream, and not in coronal structures. The comparison of the observed
velocity along the line of sight, 38.3+/-5.1 km/s, with the inferred intrinsic
velocity of the post shock of TW Hya, v_post~110-120 km/s, indicates that the
footpoints of the accretion streams on TW Hya are located at low latitudes on
the stellar surface. Our results indicate that complex magnetic field
geometries, such as that of TW Hya, permit low-latitude accretion spots.
Moreover, since on TW Hya the redshift of the soft X-ray emission is very
similar to that of the narrow component of the CIV resonance doublet at 1550
Ang, as found by Ardila et al. (2013), then the plasma at 2-4 MK and that at
0.1 MK likely originate in the same post-shock regions.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics; 2nd version

Menthol cigarettes and smoking cessation behavior
Although much is known about smoking cessation behavior, the vast majority of research has not assessed menthol as an independent factor. The objective of this review is to assess the effects, if any, that use of menthol cigarettes has on smoking cessation success in adults and youth. A total of 20 articles are included in this review. Although some studies have found that menthol smokers have less success in quitting smoking, others fail to find significant differences between menthol and non-menthol smokers. Some clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of various cessation treatments have suggested that menthol smokers have poorer outcomes, however two secondary data analysis studies (which used the same original dataset) failed to find any difference in success rate associated with particular treatments. Although there is some suggestion that smoking menthol cigarettes is associated with worse cessation outcomes, differences are not always found. However, if there was a difference, it was always in the direction of worse outcomes for menthol smokers. Given that Black/African American smokers prefer menthol cigarettes more than White smokers, possible interactions with race/ethnicity are discussed
Improving Foresight Predictions in the 2002-2018 NFL Regular-Seasons: A Classic Tale of Quantity vs. Quality
Utilizing a modied Bradley-Terry model, we develop a method of making foresight predictions of 2002-2018 NFL games by incorporating a home-eld parameter into previously established ranking models. Knowing only the home team and score of each contest, and taking into account previous predictions, we optimize this parameter considering one of two things: the quantity of correct picks to date or the quality of predictions to date as measured by a quadratic scoringfunction. Our main results establish that optimization of quality-rather than quantity-when making a prediction has higher overall accuracy
Evidence of non-thermal X-ray emission from HH 80
Protostellar jets appear at all stages of star formation when the accretion
process is still at work. Jets travel at velocities of hundreds of km/s,
creating strong shocks when interacting with interstellar medium. Several cases
of jets have been detected in X-rays, typically showing soft emission. For the
first time, we report evidence of hard X-ray emission possibly related to
non-thermal processes not explained by previous models of the post-shock
emission predicted in the jet/ambient interaction scenario. HH 80 is located at
the south head of the jet associated to the massive protostar IRAS 18162-2048.
It shows soft and hard X-ray emission in regions that are spatially separated,
with the soft X-ray emission region situated behind the region of hard X-ray
emission. We propose a scenario for HH 80 where soft X-ray emission is
associated to thermal processes from the interaction of the jet with denser
ambient matter and the hard X-ray emission is produced by synchrotron radiation
