Simple Metals at High Pressure
In this lecture we review high-pressure phase transition sequences exhibited
by simple elements, looking at the examples of the main group I, II, IV, V, and
VI elements. General trends are established by analyzing the changes in
coordination number on compression. Experimentally found phase transitions and
crystal structures are discussed with a brief description of the present

Functional kernel estimators of conditional extreme quantiles
We address the estimation of "extreme" conditional quantiles i.e. when their
order converges to one as the sample size increases. Conditions on the rate of
convergence of their order to one are provided to obtain asymptotically
Gaussian distributed kernel estimators. A Weissman-type estimator and kernel
estimators of the conditional tail-index are derived, permitting to estimate

Bullied Because of Their Teeth: Evidence from a Longitudinal Study on the Impact of Oral Health on Bullying Victimization among Australian Indigenous Children
Making life better for Indigenous peoples is a global priority. Although bullying and oral health have always been a topic of concern, there is limited information regarding the impact of this problem on the general population, with no evidence in this regard among the Australian Indigenous population. Thus, we aimed to quantify the relationship between bullying victimization and oral health problems by remoteness among 766 Australian Indigenous children aged between 10–15-years using data from the LSIC study. Bivariate and multilevel mixed-effect logistic regression analyses were employed. Findings indicated children self-reported bullying more than parents reported their children were being bullied (44% vs. 33.6%), with a higher percentage from rural/remote areas than urban areas. Parents reported that oral health problems increased the probability (OR 2.20, p < 0.05) of being bullied, in Indigenous children living in urban areas. Racial discrimination, lower level of parental education and poor child oral hygiene increase the risk of bullying victimization. Parental happiness with life and a safe community were associated with a lower risk of bullying. Dental problems are linked with Australian Indigenous children experiencing bullying victimization. Cultural resilience and eliminating discrimination may be two modifiable paths to ameliorating health issues associated with bullying in the Australian Indigenous community

The Dendritic magnetic avalanches in carbon-free MgB thin films with and without a deposited Au layer
From the magneto optics images (MOI), the dendritic magnetic avalanche is
known to appear dominantly for thin films of the newly discovered MgB. To
clarify the origin of this phenomenon, we studied in detail the MOI of
carbon-free MgB thin films with and without a deposited gold layer. The MOI
indicated carbon contamination was not the main source of the avalanche. The
MOI clearly showed that the deposition of metallic gold deposition on top of a
MgB thin film improved its thermal stability and suppressed the sudden
appearance of the dendritic flux avalanche. This is consistent with the

Intra-day variability observations and the VLBI structure analysis of quasar S4 0917+624
The IDV observations of S4 0917+624 were carried out monthly, from August
2005 to January 2010, with the Urumqi 25m radio telescope at 4.8 GHz. The
quasar S4 0917+624 exhibits only very weak or no IDV during our 4.5 year
observing interval. Prior to the year 2000, the source S4 0917+624 was one of
the most prominent IDV sources. Our new data indicate that the previous strong
IDV has ceased. We analyzed the long-term VLBI structural variability using
Gaussian model-fitting. From this we obtained the flux densities and the
deconvolved sizes of core and inner-jet components of the source. We studied
the properties such as core fraction, angular size, spectral index, and
brightness temperature of VLBI core for S4 0917+624, as well as the time delay
between 5 and 15 GHz variations, and compared them with the IDV properties of
S4 0917+624. The source shows ejection of several jet components that are
suspected to have partially reduced the IDV amplitude of S4 0917+624. However,
during 2005-2006, the VLBI core size was comparable to the size before the year
2000, but no strong IDV was detected in the period, suggesting that the
quenching effect due to source size changes may not be responsible for the lack
of strong IDV after the year 2000. The refractive scattering properties for the
strong IDV phase of S4 0917+624 before the year 2000 are discussed. The
disappearance of strong IDV in S4 0917+624 after the year 2000 is a mystery and
cannot be explained via the quenching effect by changes in the observable VLBI
structure. However, it may be caused by changes in the interstellar medium,
i.e. by interstellar weather, which induces changes in the scintillation
pattern on timescales of several years. Further coordinated multi-frequency
observations will be required to distinguish between the effect of
source-intrinsic variability and changing properties of the interstellar

Using diffusion MRI to discriminate areas of cortical grey matter
Cortical area parcellation is a challenging problem that is often approached by combining structural imaging (e.g., quantitative T1, diffusion-based connectivity) with functional imaging (e.g., task activations, topological mapping, resting state correlations). Diffusion MRI (dMRI) has been widely adopted to analyse white matter microstructure, but scarcely used to distinguish grey matter regions because of the reduced anisotropy there. Nevertheless, differences in the texture of the cortical 'fabric' have long been mapped by histologists to distinguish cortical areas. Reliable area-specific contrast in the dMRI signal has previously been demonstrated in selected occipital and sensorimotor areas. We expand upon these findings by testing several diffusion-based feature sets in a series of classification tasks. Using Human Connectome Project (HCP) 3T datasets and a supervised learning approach, we demonstrate that diffusion MRI is sensitive to architectonic differences between a large number of different cortical areas defined in the HCP parcellation. By employing a surface-based cortical imaging pipeline, which defines diffusion features relative to local cortical surface orientation, we show that we can differentiate areas from their neighbours with higher accuracy than when using only fractional anisotropy or mean diffusivity. The results suggest that grey matter diffusion may provide a new, independent source of information for dividing up the cortex
In-plane magnetic anisotropy of Fe atoms on BiSe(111)
The robustness of the gapless topological surface state hosted by a 3D
topological insulator against perturbations of magnetic origin has been the
focus of recent investigations. We present a comprehensive study of the
magnetic properties of Fe impurities on a prototypical 3D topological insulator
BiSe using local low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and
integral x-ray magnetic circular dichroism techniques. Single Fe adatoms on the
BiSe surface, in the coverage range are heavily relaxed
into the surface and exhibit a magnetic easy axis within the surface-plane,
contrary to what was assumed in recent investigations on the opening of a gap.
Using \textit{ab initio} approaches, we demonstrate that an in-plane easy axis
arises from the combination of the crystal field and dynamic hybridization

Anomalous microwave conductivity coherence peak in c-axis MgB2 thin film
The temperature dependence of the real part of the microwave complex
conductivity at 17.9 GHz obtained from surface impedance measurements of two
c-axis oriented MgB2 thin films reveals a pronounced maximum at a temperature
around 0.6 times the critical temperature. Calculations in the frame of a
two-band model based on Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory suggest that
this maximum corresponds to an anomalous coherence peak resembling the two-gap
nature of MgB2. Our model assumes there is no interband impurity scattering and
a weak interband pairing interaction, as suggested by bandstructure
calculations. In addition, the observation of a coherence peak indicates that
the pi-band is in the dirty limit and dominates the total conductivity of our
