    MIGHTEE-H I: the MH I – M* relation over the last billion years

    We study the MHI−M⋆ relation over the last billion years using the MIGHTEE-H i sample. We first model the upper envelope of the MHI−M⋆ relation with a Bayesian technique applied to a total number of 249 H i-selected galaxies, without binning the datasets, while taking account of the intrinsic scatter. We fit the envelope with both linear and non-linear models, and find that the non-linear model is preferred over the linear one with a measured transition stellar mass of log10 (M⋆M⊙) = 9.15±0.87, beyond which the slope flattens. This finding supports the view that the lack of H i gas is ultimately responsible for the decreasing star formation rate observed in the massive main-sequence galaxies. For spirals alone, which are biased towards the massive galaxies in our sample, the slope beyond the transition mass is shallower than for the full sample, indicative of distinct gas processes ongoing for the spirals/high-mass galaxies from other types with lower stellar masses. We then create mock catalogues for the MIGHTEE-H i detections and non-detections with two main galaxy populations of late- and early-type galaxies to measure the underlying MHI−M⋆ relation. We find that the turnover in this relation persists whether considering the two galaxy populations as a whole or separately. We note that an underlying linear relation could mimic this turnover in the observed scaling relation, but a model with a turnover is strongly preferred. Measurements on the logarithmic average of H i masses against the stellar mass are provided as a benchmark for future studies

    Darwin's Duchenne: Eye constriction during infant joy and distress

    Darwin proposed that smiles with eye constriction (Duchenne smiles) index strong positive emotion in infants, while cry-faces with eye constriction index strong negative emotion. Research has supported Darwin's proposal with respect to smiling, but there has been little parallel research on cry-faces (open-mouth expressions with lateral lip stretching). To investigate the possibility that eye constriction indexes the affective intensity of positive and negative emotions, we first conducted the Face-to-Face/Still-Face (FFSF) procedure at 6 months. In the FFSF, three minutes of naturalistic infant-parent play interaction (which elicits more smiles than cry-faces) are followed by two minutes in which the parent holds an unresponsive still-face (which elicits more cry-faces than smiles). Consistent with Darwin's proposal, eye constriction was associated with stronger smiling and with stronger cry-faces. In addition, the proportion of smiles with eye constriction was higher during the positive-emotion eliciting play episode than during the still-face. In parallel, the proportion of cry-faces with eye constriction was higher during the negative-emotion eliciting still-face than during play. These results are consonant with the hypothesis that eye constriction indexes the affective intensity of both positive and negative facial configurations. A preponderance of eye constriction during cry-faces was observed in a second elicitor of intense negative emotion, vaccination injections, at both 6 and 12 months of age. The results support the existence of a Duchenne distress expression that parallels the more well-known Duchenne smile. This suggests that eye constriction-the Duchenne marker-has a systematic association with early facial expressions of intense negative and positive emotion. © 2013 Mattson et al

    Influence of HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 Alleles on IgG Antibody Response to the P. vivax MSP-1, MSP-3α and MSP-9 in Individuals from Brazilian Endemic Area

    Background: the antibody response generated during malaria infections is of particular interest, since the production of specific IgG antibodies is required for acquisition of clinical immunity. However, variations in antibody responses could result from genetic polymorphism of the HLA class II genes. Given the increasing focus on the development of subunit vaccines, studies of the influence of class II alleles on the immune response in ethnically diverse populations is important, prior to the implementation of vaccine trials.Methods and Findings: in this study, we evaluated the influence of HLA-DRB1* and -DQB1* allelic groups on the naturally acquired humoral response from Brazilian Amazon individuals (n = 276) against P. vivax Merozoite Surface Protein-1 (MSP-1), MSP-3 alpha and MSP-9 recombinant proteins. Our results provide information concerning these three P. vivax antigens, relevant for their role as immunogenic surface proteins and vaccine candidates. Firstly, the studied population was heterogeneous presenting 13 HLA-DRB1* and 5 DQB1* allelic groups with a higher frequency of HLA-DRB1*04 and HLA-DQB1*03. the proteins studied were broadly immunogenic in a naturally exposed population with high frequency of IgG antibodies against PvMSP1-19 (86.7%), PvMSP-3 (77%) and PvMSP-9 (76%). Moreover, HLA-DRB1*04 and HLA-DQB1*03 alleles were associated with a higher frequency of IgG immune responses against five out of nine antigens tested, while HLA-DRB1* 01 was associated with a high frequency of non-responders to repetitive regions of PvMSP-9, and the DRB1*16 allelic group with the low frequency of responders to PvMSP3 full length recombinant protein.Conclusions: HLA-DRB1*04 alleles were associated with high frequency of antibody responses to five out of nine recombinant proteins tested in Rondonia State, Brazil.     Association between Grape Yeast Communities and the Vineyard Ecosystems

    The grape yeast biota from several wine-producing areas, with distinct soil types and grapevine training systems, was assessed on five islands of Azores Archipelago, and differences in yeast communities composition associated with the geographic origin of the grapes were explored. Fifty-seven grape samples belonging to the Vitis vinifera grapevine cultivars Verdelho dos Acores (Verdelho), Arinto da Terceira (Arinto) and Terrantez do Pico (Terrantez) were collected in two consecutive years and 40 spontaneous fermentations were achieved. A total of 1710 yeast isolates were obtained from freshly crushed grapes and 1200 from final stage of fermentations. Twenty-eight species were identified, Hanseniaspura uvarum, Pichia terricola and Metschnikowia pulcherrima being the three most representative species isolated. Candida carpophila was encountered for the first time as an inhabitant of grape or wine-associated environments. In both sampling years, a higher proportion of H. uvarum in fresh grapes from Verdelho cultivar was observed, in comparison with Arinto cultivar. Qualitatively significant differences were found among yeast communities from several locations on five islands of the Archipelago, particularly in locations with distinctive agro-ecological compositions. Our results are in agreement with the statement that grape-associated microbial biogeography is non-randomly associated with interactions of climate, soil, cultivar, and vine training systems in vineyard ecosystems.     Background Rheumatic Diseases (RD) frequently affect women during reproductive age, therefore counselling on family planning is crucial for their quality of life. Children's outcome is a major topic, but no large studies are available. This study aimed at assessing the long-term health conditions of children born to women with RD. Methods 24 Italian Rheumatology Centres distributed the questionnaire (65 multiple-choice and 12 open-answer questions) to consecutive patients (aged 18–55) during September 2015. Data were analysed dividing children upon maternal diagnosis: Chronic Arthritides (CA) and Connective Tissue Diseases (CTD). Results Data were collected for 320 children born to 184 mothers (63 CA and 121 CTD). At the time of interview, children had a mean age of 17.1±9.6 years. Pre-term delivery ( The occurrence of an autoimmune/inflammatory disease (AIID) and/or neurodevelopmental disorders (ND)/learning disabilities (LD) is reported in table 1. Twelve children (3.7%) were diagnosed with an AIID, mostly coeliac disease (8/12, 67%). Eleven children (3.4%) were diagnosed as having a ND and/or LD by a Paediatric Neuropsychiatrist. Data of in utero exposure to maternal autoantibodies and/or anti-rheumatic drugs were retrieved for 280 children (87.5%) and a comparison was performed between affected (n=11) and not-affected children (n=258). No association was found with ND/LD and in utero exposure to autoantibodies (ANA, anti-Ro, anti-dsDNA, aPL) or drugs (HCQ,AZA or steroids), neither with sex, preterm birth, birth weight or maternal diagnosis. Conclusions The long-term follow-up of children born to mothers with RD did not raise particular concerns in terms of relevant health problems. In particular, each AIID did not display a significantly increased frequency as compared to the literature. Children with ND/LD had a tendency to cluster in the group of mothers with CTD, especially after maternal diagnosis, with a higher frequency as compared to GPP (7.9% vs 3%). Our data suggest that the development of ND/LD in children of patients with RD cannot be linked exclusively to maternal disease. The results of this study can be reassuring for patients with RD about problems in the offspring possibly related to their disease

    Activation of Human Platelets by 2-Arachidonoylglycerol: Role of PKC in NO/cGMP Pathway Modulation

    We demonstrated that the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) activated dose-dependently washed human platelets and increased intracellular calcium levels. Moreover 2-AG activated protein kinase C measured as p47pleckstrin phosphorylation. These parameters were prevented by the tromboxane A2 receptor antagonist SQ29548, by phospholipase C pathway (U73122) and protein kinase C (GF109203X) inhibitors. No effect on 2-AG-induced platelet activation and calcium elevation in the presence of inhibitors of fatty acid amide hydrolase or monoacylglycerol lipase was observed. In addition we have shown that 2-AG dose-dependently increased NO and cGMP levels. These effects were abolished by U73122, GF109203X, EGTA and the intracellular calcium chelator BAPTA/AM. Moreover, 2-AG enhanced eNOS activity through the phosphorylation of its positive regulatory residue ser1177 and by dephosphorylation of the negative one thr495. The eNOS ser1177 phosphorylation was inhibited by U73122 and GF109203X but it was unaffected by the PI3K/AKT pathway inhibitors LY294002 and MK2206. The dephosphorylation of thr495 was reversed by low concentrations of calyculin A. Taken together these data suggest that 2-AG behaves as a true platelet agonist stimulating PKC activation and calcium elevation. Likely 2-AG can modulate platelet activation by increasing NO levels through eNOS activation
