Modulational instability of spatially broadband nonlinear optical pulses in four-state atomic systems

The modulational instability of broadband optical pulses in a four-state atomic system is investigated. In particular, starting from a recently derived generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, a wave-kinetic equation is derived. A comparison between coherent and random phase wave states is made. It is found that the spatial spectral broadening can contribute to the nonlinear stability of ultra-short optical pulses. Laser scattering by density fluctuations of ultra-cold atoms in a magneto-optical trap

We study the spectrum of density fluctuations in the ultra-cold gas of neutral atoms, confined in a magneto-optical trap. We determine the corresponding amplitude and spectra of laser light scattered by this medium. We derive an expression for the dynamical structure function, by using a test particle method. We propose to use the collective laser scattering as a diagnostic method for the microscopic properties of the ultra-cold matter. This will also allow us to check on the atomic correlations which are mediated by the collective mean field inside the gas.Comment: J. Phys. B (in press

Sistema físico de produção de leite da UEPAE Porto Velho: análise dos resultados zootécnicos e econômicos referentes ao período de dezembro/84 a setembro/89.

No campo experimental da Unidade de Execução de Pesquisa de Âmbito Estadual de Porto Velho (UEPAE de Porto Velho), da EMBRAPA, em Porto Velho, RO, vem sendo conduzido, desde 1984, um modelo físico de sistema de produção de leite. Este modelo tem por objetivo precípuo viabilizar a atividade leiteira na região, elevando sua produtividade e rentabilidade através da utilização de técnicas integradas de modo que se tomem instrumento de difusão de tecnologia. Atualmente, a produtividade leiteira do rebanho na região é muito baixa, situando-se em tomo de 540 l de leite/vaca/lactação de 180 dias. A partir de um rebanho mestiço Holando x Zebu, com graus de sangue 112,9/16 e 5/8, pretende-se alcançar índices econômicos de produtividade, através de tecnologias que possam ser adotadas pelos produtores locais. Dentre as tecnologias utilizadas destacam-se: inseminação artificial, pastagens diversificadas, pastejo rotacionado, suplementação dos animais com volumosos e concentrados regionais, banco de proteína e desmama precoce. Até o presente, os resultados alcançados vêm superando as metas préestabelecidas, confirmando, desse modo, a eficiência das técnicas aplicadas no sistema.bitstream/item/54885/1/SP210001.pd

Rossby waves in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We predict and describe a new collective mode in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, which is very similar to the Rossby waves in geophysics. In the regime of fast rotation, the Coriolis force dominates the dynamics and acts as a restoring force for acoustic-drift waves along the condensate. We derive a nonlinear equation that includes the effects of both the zero-point pressure and the anharmonicity of the trap. It is shown that such waves have negative phase speed, propagating in the opposite sense of the rotation. We discuss different equilibrium configurations and compare with those resulting from the Thomas-Fermi approximation.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures (submitted to PRL
