Arithmetical properties of Multiple Ramanujan sums
In the present paper, we introduce a multiple Ramanujan sum for arithmetic
functions, which gives a multivariable extension of the generalized Ramanujan
sum studied by D. R. Anderson and T. M. Apostol. We then find fundamental
arithmetic properties of the multiple Ramanujan sum and study several types of
Dirichlet series involving the multiple Ramanujan sum. As an application, we
evaluate higher-dimensional determinants of higher-dimensional matrices, the
entries of which are given by values of the multiple Ramanujan sum.Comment: 19 page

Inversive Meadows and Divisive Meadows
Inversive meadows are commutative rings with a multiplicative identity
element and a total multiplicative inverse operation whose value at 0 is 0.
Divisive meadows are inversive meadows with the multiplicative inverse
operation replaced by a division operation. We give finite equational
specifications of the class of all inversive meadows and the class of all
divisive meadows. It depends on the angle from which they are viewed whether
inversive meadows or divisive meadows must be considered more basic. We show
that inversive and divisive meadows of rational numbers can be obtained as
initial algebras of finite equational specifications. In the spirit of
Peacock's arithmetical algebra, we study variants of inversive and divisive
meadows without an additive identity element and/or an additive inverse
operation. We propose simple constructions of variants of inversive and
divisive meadows with a partial multiplicative inverse or division operation
from inversive and divisive meadows. Divisive meadows are more basic if these
variants are considered as well. We give a simple account of how mathematicians
deal with 1 / 0, in which meadows and a customary convention among
mathematicians play prominent parts, and we make plausible that a convincing
account, starting from the popular computer science viewpoint that 1 / 0 is
undefined, by means of some logic of partial functions is not attainable.Comment: 18 pages; error corrected; 29 pages, combined with arXiv:0909.2088

Stellar populations of classical and pseudo-bulges for a sample of isolated spiral galaxies
In this paper we present the stellar population synthesis results for a
sample of 75 bulges in isolated spiral Sb-Sc galaxies, using the spectroscopic
data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the STARLIGHT code. We find that
both pseudo-bulges and classical bulges in our sample are predominantly
composed of old stellar populations, with mean mass-weighted stellar age around
10 Gyr. While the stellar population of pseudo-bulges is, in general, younger
than that of classical bulges, the difference is not significant, which
indicates that it is hard to distinguish pseudo-bulges from classical bulges,
at least for these isolated galaxies, only based on their stellar populations.
Pseudo-bulges have star formation activities with relatively longer timescale
than classical bulges, indicating that secular evolution is more important in
this kind of systems. Our results also show that pseudo-bulges have a lower
stellar velocity dispersion than their classical counterparts, which suggests
that classical bulges are more dispersion-supported than pseudo-bulges.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space

A functional riboSNitch in the 3' untranslated region of FKBP5 alters MicroRNA-320a binding efficiency and mediates vulnerability to chronic post-traumatic pain
Previous studies have shown that common variants of the gene coding for FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP5), a critical regulator of glucocorticoid sensitivity, affect vulnerability to stress-related disorders. In a previous report, FKBP5 rs1360780 was identified as a functional variant because of its effect on gene methylation. Here we report evidence for a novel functional FKBP5 allele, rs3800373. This study assessed the association between rs3800373 and post-traumatic chronic pain in 1607 women and men from two ethnically diverse human cohorts. The molecular mechanism through which rs3800373 affects adverse outcomes was established via in silico, in vivo, and in vitro analyses. The rs3800373 minor allele predicted worse adverse outcomes after trauma exposure, such that individuals with the minor (risk) allele developed more severe post-traumatic chronic musculoskeletal pain. Among these individuals, peritraumatic circulating FKBP5 expression levels increased as cortisol and glucocorticoid receptor (NR3C1) mRNA levels increased, consistent with increased glucocorticoid resistance. Bioinformatic, in vitro, and mutational analyses indicate that the rs3800373 minor allele reduces the binding of a stress-and pain-associated microRNA, miR-320a, to FKBP5 via altering the FKBP5 mRNA 3'UTR secondary structure (i.e., is a riboSNitch). This results in relatively greater FKBP5 translation, unchecked by miR-320a. Overall, these results identify an important gene–miRNA interaction influencing chronic pain risk in vulnerable individuals and suggest that exogenous methods to achieve targeted reduction in poststress FKBP5 mRNA expression may constitute useful therapeutic strategies
Large enhancement of deuteron polarization with frequency modulated microwaves
We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of
0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters
polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target
was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment
at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra
show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in
the spectral wings. Although these results are not understood theoretically,
they may provide a useful testing ground for the deeper understanding of
dynamic nuclear polarization.Comment: 10 pages, including the figures coming in uuencoded compressed tar

A VALUE PLATFORM ANALYSIS PERSPECTIVE ON CUSTOMER ACCESS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Customer access information technologies (CAITs) provide a link between a
firm and its customers. Firms invest in CAITs to reduce costs, increase revenues
and market share, lock in existing customers and capture new ones. These benefits,
however, are notoriously difficult to measure. This paper proposes an evaluative
method for CAlT deployment called value platform analysis, that is based on a
conceptual model drawn from the theory of retail outlet deployment in marketing
science. The model focuses on the impact of CAIT features and environmental
features on transactions generated by the CAIT. Specific econometric models are
developed for deployment. Hypotheses regarding the likely impact of automated
teller machine (ATM) location design choices and environmental features on ATM
transactions are evaluated. The results indicate that there are a number of key
features influencing ATM performance. Two distinct ATM deployment scenarios
emerge: one for servicing a bank's own customers, and another for providing
transaction services for customers for a fee.Information Systems Working Papers Serie
Trispecific antibody targeting HIV-1 and T cells activates and eliminates latently-infected cells in HIV/SHIV infections.
Agents that can simultaneously activate latent HIV, increase immune activation and enhance the killing of latently-infected cells represent promising approaches for HIV cure. Here, we develop and evaluate a trispecific antibody (Ab), N6/αCD3-αCD28, that targets three independent proteins: (1) the HIV envelope via the broadly reactive CD4-binding site Ab, N6; (2) the T cell antigen CD3; and (3) the co-stimulatory molecule CD28. We find that the trispecific significantly increases antigen-specific T-cell activation and cytokine release in both CD4 + and CD8 + T cells. Co-culturing CD4 + with autologous CD8 + T cells from ART-suppressed HIV + donors with N6/αCD3-αCD28, results in activation of latently-infected cells and their elimination by activated CD8 + T cells. This trispecific antibody mediates CD4 + and CD8 + T-cell activation in non-human primates and is well tolerated in vivo. This HIV-directed antibody therefore merits further development as a potential intervention for the eradication of latent HIV infection
Observation of exclusive DVCS in polarized electron beam asymmetry measurements
We report the first results of the beam spin asymmetry measured in the
reaction e + p -> e + p + gamma at a beam energy of 4.25 GeV. A large asymmetry
with a sin(phi) modulation is observed, as predicted for the interference term
of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and the Bethe-Heitler process. The
amplitude of this modulation is alpha = 0.202 +/- 0.028. In leading-order and
leading-twist pQCD, the alpha is directly proportional to the imaginary part of
the DVCS amplitude.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
A Kinematically Complete Measurement of the Proton Structure Function F2 in the Resonance Region and Evaluation of Its Moments
We measured the inclusive electron-proton cross section in the nucleon
resonance region (W < 2.5 GeV) at momentum transfers Q**2 below 4.5 (GeV/c)**2
with the CLAS detector. The large acceptance of CLAS allowed for the first time
the measurement of the cross section in a large, contiguous two-dimensional
range of Q**2 and x, making it possible to perform an integration of the data
at fixed Q**2 over the whole significant x-interval. From these data we
extracted the structure function F2 and, by including other world data, we
studied the Q**2 evolution of its moments, Mn(Q**2), in order to estimate
higher twist contributions. The small statistical and systematic uncertainties
of the CLAS data allow a precise extraction of the higher twists and demand
significant improvements in theoretical predictions for a meaningful comparison
with new experimental results.Comment: revtex4 18 pp., 12 figure
