[eng] Abstract This is the introduction to a doctoral dissertation which was presented to the University of Paris- Sorbonne in 1986. The author explains how both her own intellectual itinerary and the state of historical research in Brazil led her to study the province of Bahia and its capital, Salvador, in the 19th century. As a foreignborn brazilian, who had been educated in Europe, she had a special approach and reaction to the pervasive sluggishness, which had jettled upon the formely opulent ex-capital of Brazil. She was thus drown into extensive and thorough research on population, the family, the Church, politics, trade, weath and poverty in this part of the New World.

[eng] Abstract The poor parish priest in the SertĂąo or the chapelain of a sugar-mill owner are at a long distance from administrative and ecclesiastical authorities. They do not live, therefore, their calling in the same way as the priest who resides in the capital city. Thanks to wills and inventories after death, historians observe the familiar images of the priest as school-master, as godfather, as uncle, as father of a family. He is always close to his flock and to their preoccupations ; he is dependant upon them for his daily living, but he has a leading role in his community.
