WIRIS OM tools: a semantic formula editor
With the increasing reliance on computers for the automatic processing
of information a new method is needed for editing mathematical formulae.
We are used to WYSIWYG editors that produce beautiful presentations of
formulae and store the typesetting primitives rather than the meaning of the
formulas. However, new services such as database searching or calculation
web-services work best if they have access to the semantic information behind
a formula. This can only be done with a new generation of formula editors.
In this paper we present WIRIS OM Tools [17], a semantic oriented formula
editor which addresses these concerns. It is based on the OpenMath language
and a suitable transformation process between OpenMath and MathML ex-
pressions. Additionally, this approach adds new features for the users such
as error, type and syntax checking. The editor is currently being used in the
LeActiveMath and WebALT projects
On a generalized gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect
A massless spinor particle is considered in the background gravitational
field due to a rotating body. In the weak field approximation it is shown that
the solution of the Weyl equations depend on the angular momentum of the
rotating body, which does not affect the curvature in this approximation. This
result may be looked upon as a generalization of the gravitational
Aharonov-Bohm effect.Comment: 10 pages, LATEX fil

On the far-infrared metallicity diagnostics: applications to high-redshift galaxies
In an earlier paper we modeled the far-infrared emission from a star-forming
galaxy using the photoionisation code CLOUDY and presented metallicity
sensitive diagnostics based on far-infrared fine structure line ratios. Here,
we focus on the applicability of the [OIII]88/[NII]122 microns line ratio as a
gas phase metallicity indicator in high redshift submillimetre luminous
galaxies. The [OIII]88/[NII]122 microns ratio is strongly dependent on the
ionization parameter (which is related to the total number of ionizing photons)
as well as the gas electron density. We demonstrate how the ratio of 88/$122
continuum flux measurements can provide a reasonable estimate of the ionization
parameter while the availability of the [NII]205 microns line can constrain the
electron density. Using the [OIII]88/[NII]122 microns line ratios from a sample
of nearby normal and star-forming galaxies we measure their gas phase
metallicities and find that their mass metallicity relation is consistent with
the one derived using optical emission lines. Using new, previously
unpublished, Herschel spectroscopic observations of key far-infrared fine
structure lines of the z~3 galaxy HLSW-01 and additional published measurements
of far-infrared fine structure lines of high-z submillimetre luminous galaxies
we derive gas phase metallicities using their [OIII]88/[NII]122 microns line
ratio. We find that the metallicities of these z~3 submm luminous galaxies are
consistent with solar metallicities and that they appear to follow the
mass-metallicity relation expected for z~3 systems.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS in pres
Clinical surveillance of thrombotic microangiopathies in Scotland, 2003-2005
The prevalence, incidence and outcomes of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura (TTP) are not well established in adults or children from prospective studies. We sought to identify both outcomes and current management strategies using prospective, national surveillance of HUS and TTP, from 2003 to 2005 inclusive. We also investigated the links between these disorders and factors implicated in the aetiology of HUS and TTP including infections, chemotherapy, and immunosuppression. Most cases of HUS were caused by verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC), of which serotype O157 predominated, although other serotypes were identified. The list of predisposing factors for TTP was more varied although use of immunosuppressive agents and severe sepsis, were the most frequent precipitants. The study demonstrates that while differentiating between HUS and TTP is sometimes difficult, in most cases the two syndromes have quite different predisposing factors and clinical parameters, enabling clinical and epidemiological profiling for these disorders
R-symmetric Gauge Mediation and the MRSSM
This is an invited summary of a seminar talk given at various institutions in
the United States and Canada. After a brief introduction, a review of the
minimal R-symmetric supersymmetric standard model is given, and the benefits to
the flavor sector are discussed. R-symmetric gauge mediation is an attempt to
realize this model using metastable supersymmetry breaking techniques. Sample
low energy spectra are presented and tuning is discussed. Various other
phenomenological results are summarized.Comment: 14 pages, invited Brief Review, submitted to Modern Physics Letters
