Role of the annealing parameters on the resistance of indium tin oxide nanocrystalline films
The optical and electrical properties of films made of nanoparticles of indium tin oxide (ITO) are widely studied because of the significance of this material for transparent electrodes, smart windows, and nonlinear optics components. In this work, a systematic study of the resistance in ITO nanocrystalline films, as a function of post-fabrication parameters, such as the temperature and time of annealing, has been performed. A tunability of the resistance with the annealing parameters, in a range of three orders of magnitude, has been demonstrated. The optical properties of the nanocrystalline films were also evaluated as a function of the same parameters. Results show a different influence of temperature and time on the modification of the absorption properties. Temperature and time can be used synergistically to obtain thin films with desired optical and electrical properties through post-fabrication treatments
Generalization properties of finite size polynomial Support Vector Machines
The learning properties of finite size polynomial Support Vector Machines are
analyzed in the case of realizable classification tasks. The normalization of
the high order features acts as a squeezing factor, introducing a strong
anisotropy in the patterns distribution in feature space. As a function of the
training set size, the corresponding generalization error presents a crossover,
more or less abrupt depending on the distribution's anisotropy and on the task
to be learned, between a fast-decreasing and a slowly decreasing regime. This
behaviour corresponds to the stepwise decrease found by Dietrich et al.[Phys.
Rev. Lett. 82 (1999) 2975-2978] in the thermodynamic limit. The theoretical
results are in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Asia and europe: So distant so close? the case of lipoptena fortisetosa in Italy
In Europe, 5 Lipoptena species have been recorded, including Lipoptena fortisetosa. This species, native to Asian countries, was described as a parasite of sika deer and its appearance in Europe dates back to more than 50 years ago. Lipoptena fortisetosa has been recently reported in Italy, sharing its hosts with Lipoptena cervi. A morpho-molecular approach was developed to determine the phylogenetic interrelationship of Italian and Asian CO1 haplotypes sequenced from Lipoptena fly individuals collected in Italy, and their DNA sequences were compared with conspecifics available in GenBank; morphological key-characters (terminalia) of L. fortisetosa were compared with the original description. Two haplotypes were recorded from Italy and assigned to L. cervi and L. fortisetosa, respectively. The latter was part of the monophyletic clade L. fortisetosa, along with 2 Central European and 2 Korean haplotypes (100% identical with one of the Korean haplotypes); moreover, Italian L. fortisetosa female terminalia were consistent with the original description of Asian individuals. Pending more in-depth investigations, this study provides a first answer to the hypothesis of the recent colonization of Italy by L. fortisetosa from Asia as we did not detect any obvious and stable morphological and molecular differences in specimens from the 2 geographical areas. The presence of the sika deer in Europe was retraced and the possible route traveled by the parasite from Asia and the eco-biological factors that may have enhanced its settlement are discussed
Molecular detection of Cyclospora in water, soil, vegetables and humans in southern Italy signals a need for improved monitoring by health authorities
To date, in Europe, there is scant information on the occurrence of Cyclospora in water from treatment plants and
in humans, and no data are available on soil or fresh plant products. Here, we undertook the first molecular survey
of Cyclospora in multiple biological matrices collected from the Apulia region of southern Italy. Samples of irrigation
water from four municipal treatment plants, eight different types of vegetables or fruit (cucumber,
lettuce, fennel, celery, tomato, melon, endive and chicory) and soil from the same farms on which these plants
were grown, as well as faecal samples from humans living in the same region were tested by qPCR-coupled
single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis and DNA sequencing. Cyclospora was detected in
15.5% of all 213 samples tested. Specifically, this protist was detected in (i) treated water (21.3% of 94 samples),
well water (6.2% of 16), but not drinking water (0% of 3); (ii) soil (11.8% of 51 samples) and vegetables (12.2% of
49),with the highest prevalence (18.7%) on fennel; and (iii) human stools (27.5% of 40 samples). In environmental
and food samples, Cyclosporawas detectedmainly in autumn and was significantly more prevalent in the faeces
from humans of 40–50 years of age. This is the first comprehensive molecular survey of Cyclospora in
environmental, food and human faecal samples in Europe. These data suggest that irrigation water, soil and vegetables
might be contaminated by Cyclospora cayetanensis, which might represent a source of infection to
humans in the study area and calls for monitoring by health authorities
Electrochromism in Electrolyte-Free and Solution Processed Bragg Stacks
Achieving an active manipulation of colours has huge implications in
optoelectronics, as colours engineering can be exploited in a number of
applications, ranging from display to lightning. In the last decade, the
synergy of the highly pure colours of 1D photonic crystals, also known as Bragg
stacks, with electro-tunable materials have been proposed as an interesting
route to attain such a technologically relevant effect. However, recent works
rely on the use of liquid electrolytes, which can pose issues in terms of
chemical and environmental stability. Here, we report on the proof-of-concept
of an electrolyte free and solution-processed electrochromic Bragg stack. We
integrate an electro-responsive plasmonic metal oxide, namely indium tin oxide,
in a 1D photonic crystal structure made of alternating layers of ITO and TiO2
nanoparticles. In such a device we observed 15 nm blue-shift upon application
of an external bias (5 V), an effect that we attribute to the increase of ITO
charge density arising from the capacitive charging at the metal
oxide/dielectric interface and from the current flowing throughout the porous
structure. Our data suggest that electrochromism can be attained in all-solid
state systems by combining a judicious selection of the constituent materials
with device architecture optimisation

Toxoplasma gondii lineages circulating in slaughtered industrial pigs and potential risk for consumers
Toxoplasma gondii is a cosmopolitan zoonotic protozoan parasite, and the consumption of raw or undercooked pig meat is one of the most important sources of T. gondii infection. Three predominant lineages, types I, II, and III, are widespread in Europe. Although still poorly understood, a relationship between each type and the severity of illness represents a public health issue. To gain further knowledge of the genotypes in circulation and of the potential risk for consumers, one heart sample and one diaphragm sample (206 total) were taken from each of 103 pig carcasses at an abattoir in Italy. Then, we used 529-bp repetitive element PCR and a B1 real-time PCR high-resolution melting assay coupled with sequencing to detect and genotype T. gondii isolates. T. gondii DNA was detected in 14 pigs (13.6%, 95% confidence interval ¼ 7 to 20.2%), and types I (3.9%), II (5.8%), and III (3.9%) were identified. We found that heart tissue had a significantly higher PCR positivity rate for T. gondii than did diaphragm tissue. This is Europe’s largest study on genotyping of T. gondii from pigs, and it demonstrates that all three main lineages are present in carcasses of industrially reared pigs in Italy. There is a potential risk to consumers of infection with any or all of the three lineages, and the related clinical consequences should be taken into account. This study suggests that monitoring of T. gondii types in meat is essential, especially in meat that is traditionally eaten raw or that is minimally processed
Clustering data by inhomogeneous chaotic map lattices
A new approach to clustering, based on the physical properties of
inhomogeneous coupled chaotic maps, is presented. A chaotic map is assigned to
each data-point and short range couplings are introduced. The stationary regime
of the system corresponds to a macroscopic attractor independent of the initial
conditions. The mutual information between couples of maps serves to partition
the data set in clusters, without prior assumptions about the structure of the
underlying distribution of the data. Experiments on simulated and real data

Giardia and Cryptosporidium in inflowing water and harvested shellfish in a Lagoon in Southern Italy
Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp. are important enteric protozoan pathogens for humans and animals, and have been found to contaminate water as well as edible shellfish all over the world. This is the first study to simultaneously investigate the presence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in inflowing water and harvested shellfish in a geographically closed environment (Varano Lagoon, Southern Italy). Samples of treated wastewater were collected each month - at the outlet from the treatment plant, and downstream at the inlet into the lagoon - from the channels flowing into the Lagoon, together with specimens of Ruditapes decussatus and Mytilus galloprovincialis from shellfish-farms on the same lagoon. Giardia cysts were found by immunofluorescence (IF) microscopy in 16 out of 21 samples of treated wastewater and in 7 out of 21 samples from downstream water channels, and viable cysts were also detected by a beta-giardin RT-PCR. G. duodenalis Assemblages A and B were identified by small ribosomal Subunit (18S-rDNA) and triosephosphate isomerase (tpi)-PCR, followed by sequencing. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found by IF in 5 out of 21 wastewater samples, and in 8 out of 21 samples from water channels. Molecular analysis identified the zoonotic species Cryptosporidium parvum by oocyst wall protein (COWP)-PCR and sequencing. Higher concentrations of Giardia cysts than Cryptosporidium oocysts were registered in almost all wastewater and water samples. IF and molecular testing of shellfish gave negative results for both protozoa. Wastewaters carrying Giardia and Cryptosporidium (oo)cysts are discharged into the Lagoon; however, the shellfish harvested in the same environment were found to be unaffected, thus suggesting that physical, ecological and climatic conditions may prevent contamination of harvested shellfish.
