School absenteeism: some possible actions from the school
This article addresses the issue of school absenteeism, dealing with some approaches, strategies and actions that any school should take into account in order to prevent it or to act on it as soon as possible. The first part deals with how the actions to be taken can be mainly focused on the truant student or the school and the different aspects of how it works, as well as –in parallel– can have a preventive role or, rather, palliative. In the second part deals with four aspects that should be considered at schools to address this matter: 1) Agreeing in the register mode and non-attendance control, 2) establishing rules about school assistance and consequences of non-assistance, 3) making improvements that promote a bigger school engagement and attachment of the student, and 4) cultivating and keeping constant and fruitful relationships with the families
Employability skills developed by non-traditional students along their undergraduate program
This paper was developed in the context of the European project EMPLOY (Enhancing
the employability of non-traditional students in higher education, Erasmus Plus Program
2015-2017), a qualitative, interdisciplinary and biographical research focusing on nontraditional
university students and graduates from six European countries (Sweden,
Poland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal and Spain). The project aims are, among
others: a) to understand the employability from the perspective of students and graduates;
b) to increase knowledge and understanding of the factors that promote or hinder
employability; c) to explore the impact of age, gender, social class, ethnicity and disability
in employment prospects of students; etc.
In spite of the fact that university graduates are in better conditions when accessing to the
labor market, non-traditional students might experience special difficulties related to their
specific characteristics. We lack of disaggregated information related to employment
rates for higher education graduates and there is not specific research which deepens in
the transition process of non-traditional groups. Our study is concerned with identifying
which employability skills have been developed by non-traditional students during their
stay at the University of Seville. For this purpose we consider the formal learning
associated to their syllabuses, the extracurricular training they have been involved in, as
well as the previous work experiences.
We have carried out seven biographical in-depth interviews with students of the
University of Seville (4 females, 3 males), all of them studying degrees in different areas
of knowledge: Pedagogy, Philosophy, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmacy, Biology and
Business Management. All participants were in the final year of their undergraduate
program. In addition, all of them represented different characteristics of non-traditional
students: adult and mature students (3), immigrants (2) and learners with low economic
and cultural capital (2).
As for the results and following the classification of professional competences raised by
Bunk (1994), we note that through the university syllabuses students developed the
methodological competence, that is the reaction from previous experiences and problem
solving skills. However, work experience and extracurricular activities promoted social
competence, one that enables them to collaborate with others in a communicative and
constructive way, showing interpersonal understanding. In addition, in the three training
fields, the specific skills or qualifications of the job, technical competence, were also
developed.
Finally, it can be noted that in the three areas considered in our analysis, there is a lack in
the development of the participatory competence, which refers to coordination and
organisational skills, leadership and ability to make decisions and take responsibility.Unión Europea 2014-1-UK01-KA203-00184
Dark/Masculine—Light/Feminine: How Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald Changed Glasgow School of Art
[Abstract] Glasgow was by tradition a classical city like its rival Edinburgh. In Glasgow Classicism remained in Italianate buildings with monumental Greek, Egyptian and abstract forms. In the 1880s and the 1890s, when Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Glasgow 1868- London 1928) was beginning his career, Glasgow architecture became more diverse, combining a generalized Scottishness with freedom and variety. With a design philosophy solidly rooted in Scottish tradition, the sophisticated Mackintosh disregarded the architecture of Greece and Rome, in his opinion unsuitable for Scotland. The aim of this paper is to show how by using a fruitful male/female polarity the Mackintoshes managed to combine husbandly elements of architecture and wifely interior designs in order to produce a domestically comfortable microworld which, after years of oblivion, has become the perfect tourist package for Glasgow
Analyzing the dynamics of forest fires in Málaga province: assessing the interplay of vegetation and human influence on regional hazard trends over three decades
Wildfires are a global issue, exacerbated by climate change, and are particularly significant in the Mediterranean basin. This study aims to analyze forest fire dynamics in Málaga province (Southern Spain), examine their temporal evolution, evaluate significant hazards such as vegetation and human activities, and assess the effectiveness of measures taken against forest fires.
The primary objective is to identify factors that exacerbate fires and suggest mitigation strategies. The study analyzed the frequency, affected area, and casualties of forest fires over the past 30 years using data from the Andalusian Environmental Information Network (REDIAM). Vegetation flammability, generally high in the province, was evaluated by classifying plant species from the Map of Land Use and Land Cover in Andalucía (MUCVA) and comparing burned and unburned areas from 2010 to 2022. Additionally, fuel density and continuity, also notably high, were examined using REDIAM geodata. The study also assessed the implementation of the Forest Fire Fighting Plan in the Autonomous Community of Andalucía (INFOCA Plan), focusing on its spatial distribution and the “protection” provided by public administration for areas with protective designations and public forests. Finally, the effectiveness of prevention and firefighting measures in Málaga province was evaluated through an extensive literature review. The data indicates a high occurrence of fires, with three-quarters caused by human activities, and significant peaks in the affected areas. It was found that protected areas represented three-quarters of the burned area. The findings revealed that certain preventive measures were insufficient, leading to proposed improvements.Funding for open access charge: Universidad Málaga/CBUA. Religious work of the silversmith Martín Sánchez de la Cruz
This article aims to release new data about the silversmith from Cordoba Martín Sánchez de La Cruz, a prominent silversmith of the seventeenth century. Unpublished biographical references are provided and hitherto unknown religious pieces of work of the artist are also documented. Made in two different stages – 1606-1616 and 1626-1632 – most of them were ordered by the Cathedral Council or several parish churches of Cordoba and its surrounding area. Unfortunately, most of them are missing
