Randomly Diluted e_g Orbital-Ordered Systems
Dilution effects on the long-range ordered state of the doubly degenerate
orbital are investigated. Quenched impurities without the orbital degree
of freedom are introduced in the orbital model where the long-range order is
realized by the order-from-disorder mechanism. It is shown by the Monte-Carlo
simulation and the cluster-expansion method that a decrease in the orbital
ordering temperature by dilution is remarkable in comparison with that in the
randomly diluted spin models. Tiltings of orbitals around impurity cause this
unique dilution effects on the orbital systems. The present theory provides a
new view point for the recent experiments in KCuZnF.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
AdS3 Gravitational Instantons from Conformal Field Theory
A conformal field theory on the boundary of three-dimensional asymptotic
anti-de Sitter spaces which appear as near horizon geometry of D-brane bound
states is discussed. It is shown that partition functions of gravitational
instantons appear as high and low temperature limits of the partition function
of the conformal field theory. The result reproduces phase transition between
the anti-de Sitter space and the BTZ black hole in the bulk gravity.Comment: 22 pages, minor correction
Superhydrophobic platforms for the combinatorial analysis of biomaterials-cells interactions using arrays of 3D scaffolds with distinct mechanical and morphological properties
High-throughput studies of cells mechanotransduction are usually performed using 2D biomaterials. However, cells-extracellular matrix interactions in the body occur in 3D environment. By using cells entrapped in hydrogels, it is not easy to isolate the mechanical effect from the chemical cues of biomaterials. We used a cytocompatible and non-expensive platform based in the patterning of wettable spots in superhydrophobic surfaces to deposit porous biomaterials in these regions. Freeze-dried alginate/chitosan scaffolds were used to create an array of mechanical properties and porosities. Adaptation of dynamic mechanic analysis equipment allowed performing on-chip single scaffold analysis. Micro-computed tomography allowed acquir- ing data for whole chips simultaneously. Results were validated using individual scaffolds and single-formulation chips. A sub-array with combined modulus/porosity properties was selected. Fibronectin (Fn) in different concentration was adsorbed in the scaffolds, and fibroblasts and osteoblast-like cells were seeded. The independent study of variables influence in cell response was performed by image-based methods. In the absence of Fn fibroblasts did not respond to mechani- cal properties in the chip range. Osteoblast-like cells showed higher cell adhesion in stiffer substrates. The adsorption of Fn was studied qualita- tively by image methods. Results related with Fn amount and scaffoldsâ mechanical properties were analyzed for each cell type.</p
Impact of heavy hole-light hole coupling on optical selection rules in GaAs quantum dots
We report strong heavy hole-light mixing in GaAs quantum dots grown by
droplet epitaxy. Using the neutral and charged exciton emission as a monitor we
observe the direct consequence of quantum dot symmetry reduction in this strain
free system. By fitting the polar diagram of the emission with simple
analytical expressions obtained from kp theory we are able to extract
the mixing that arises from the heavy-light hole coupling due to the
geometrical asymmetry of the quantum dot.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in the Assessment of Pericardial Abnormalities: a Case Series
Background: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has a unique role in evaluating pericardial disease, permitting non-invasive tissue analysis, and haemodynamic assessment.
Case summary: In Case 1 of recurrent pericarditis, CMR confirmed reactivation of inflammation with late gadolinium enhancement and native T1/T2 mapping techniques, prompting therapeutic changes. In constrictive pericarditis, CMR is the only modality capable of differentiating a subacute potentially reversible form (Case 2), from a chronic, burnt out irreversible phase characterized by constrictive physiology (Case 3).
Discussion: Cardiac magnetic resonance is an effective tool to tailor individual therapy, particularly in cases of recurrent and constrictive pericarditis. Late gadolinium enhancement provides diagnostic and prognostic information, and multiparametric mapping has emerged as a promising tool with incremental diagnostic value.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Charged black holes: Wave equations for gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations
A pair of wave equations for the electromagnetic and gravitational
perturbations of the charged Kerr black hole are derived. The perturbed
Einstein-Maxwell equations in a new gauge are employed in the derivation. The
wave equations refer to the perturbed Maxwell spinor and to the shear
of a principal null direction of the Weyl curvature. The whole
construction rests on the tripod of three distinct derivatives of the first
curvature of a principal null direction.Comment: 12 pages, to appear in Ap.
