Rapid acceleration of electrons in the magnetosphere by fast-mode MHD waves
During major megnetic storms, enhanced flux of relativistic electrons in the
inner magnetosphere have been observed to correleated with ULF waves. The
enhancements can take place over a period of several hours. In order to account
for such a rapid generation of relativistic electrons, we examine the mechanism
of transit-time acceleration of electrons by low-frequency fast-mode MHD waves,
here the assumed form of ULF waves. Calcaulations of the acceleration
timescales in the model show that fast-mode waves in the Pc4 to Pc5 frequency
range, with typically observed wave amplitudes 10--20 nT, can accelerate the

Gauge fields in (A)dS within the unfolded approach: algebraic aspects
It has recently been shown that generalized connections of the (A)dS space
symmetry algebra provide an effective geometric and algebraic framework for all
types of gauge fields in (A)dS, both for massless and partially-massless. The
equations of motion are equipped with a nilpotent operator called
whose cohomology groups correspond to the dynamically relevant quantities like
differential gauge parameters, dynamical fields, gauge invariant field
equations, Bianchi identities etc. In the paper the -cohomology is
computed for all gauge theories of this type and the field-theoretical
interpretation is discussed. In the simplest cases the -cohomology is

Quantum W-symmetry in AdS_3
It has recently been argued that, classically, massless higher spin theories
in AdS_3 have an enlarged W_N-symmetry as the algebra of asymptotic isometries.
In this note we provide evidence that this symmetry is realised
(perturbatively) in the quantum theory. We perform a one loop computation of
the fluctuations for a massless spin field around a thermal AdS_3
background. The resulting determinants are evaluated using the heat kernel
techniques of arXiv:0911.5085. The answer factorises holomorphically, and the
contributions from the various spin fields organise themselves into vacuum
characters of the W_N symmetry. For the case of the hs(1,1) theory consisting
of an infinite tower of massless higher spin particles, the resulting answer
can be simply expressed in terms of (two copies of) the MacMahon function.Comment: 23 pages; v2: References adde
Massively parallel computing on an organic molecular layer
Current computers operate at enormous speeds of ~10^13 bits/s, but their
principle of sequential logic operation has remained unchanged since the 1950s.
Though our brain is much slower on a per-neuron base (~10^3 firings/s), it is
capable of remarkable decision-making based on the collective operations of
millions of neurons at a time in ever-evolving neural circuitry. Here we use
molecular switches to build an assembly where each molecule communicates-like
neurons-with many neighbors simultaneously. The assembly's ability to
reconfigure itself spontaneously for a new problem allows us to realize
conventional computing constructs like logic gates and Voronoi decompositions,
as well as to reproduce two natural phenomena: heat diffusion and the mutation
of normal cells to cancer cells. This is a shift from the current static
computing paradigm of serial bit-processing to a regime in which a large number
of bits are processed in parallel in dynamically changing hardware.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
RNA editing signature during myeloid leukemia cell differentiation
Adenosine deaminases acting on RNA (ADARs) are key proteins for hematopoietic stem cell self-renewal and for survival of differentiating progenitor cells. However, their specific role in myeloid cell maturation has been poorly investigated. Here we show that ADAR1 is present at basal level in the primary myeloid leukemia cells obtained from patients at diagnosis as well as in myeloid U-937 and THP1 cell lines and its expression correlates with the editing levels. Upon phorbol-myristate acetate or Vitamin D3/granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)-driven differentiation, both ADAR1 and ADAR2 enzymes are upregulated, with a concomitant global increase of A-to-I RNA editing. ADAR1 silencing caused an editing decrease at specific ADAR1 target genes, without, however, interfering with cell differentiation or with ADAR2 activity. Remarkably, ADAR2 is absent in the undifferentiated cell stage, due to its elimination through the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway, being strongly upregulated at the end of the differentiation process. Of note, peripheral blood monocytes display editing events at the selected targets similar to those found in differentiated cell lines. Taken together, the data indicate that ADAR enzymes play important and distinct roles in myeloid cells
The Heat Kernel on AdS_3 and its Applications
We derive the heat kernel for arbitrary tensor fields on S^3 and (Euclidean)
AdS_3 using a group theoretic approach. We use these results to also obtain the
heat kernel on certain quotients of these spaces. In particular, we give a
simple, explicit expression for the one loop determinant for a field of
arbitrary spin s in thermal AdS_3. We apply this to the calculation of the one
loop partition function of N=1 supergravity on AdS_3. We find that the answer
factorizes into left- and right-moving super Virasoro characters built on the

Analyses of the Expression, Immunohistochemical Properties and Serodiagnostic Potential of Schistosoma japonicum Peroxiredoxin-4
Background
Schistosoma japonicum, which inhabits the mesenteric vein of the mammalian hosts for about 20 to 30 years, is subjected to the oxidative stresses from the host defense mechanism during their intra-mammalian stages. To counteract this host immune attack, the parasite utilizes their antioxidant system for survival inside the host. Peroxiredoxins (Prxs), thiol-specific antioxidant proteins, play an essential role for protecting the parasite against oxidative stress by reducing hydrogen peroxide to water. Only three types of 2-Cys Prxs have been previously characterized in S. japonicum whereas a fourth Prx has been identified for Schistosoma mansoni as Prx-4. A sequence coding homologous to this gene in the S. japonicum database was identified, characterized and expressed as recombinant SjPrx-4 protein (rSjPrx-4). Furthermore, rSjPrx-4 was evaluated in this study for its diagnostic potentials in detecting S. japonicum infection in humans. Results
The gene found in the parasite genome contained 2 active-site cysteines with conserved sequences in the predicted amino acid (AA) sequence and showed 75% identity with that of the previously characterized Prx (TPx-1) of S. japonicum. The gene was expressed in different stages of schistosome life-cycle with highest transcription level in the adult male. The gene was cloned into a plasmid vector and then transfected into Escherichia coli for expression of rSjPrx-4. Anti-rSjPrx-4 mouse sera recognized native SjPrx-4 in egg and adult worm lysate by western blotting. The result of a mixed function oxidation assay in which rSjPrx-4 prevented the nicking of DNA from hydroxyl radicals confirmed its antioxidant activity. Subsequently, immunolocalization analysis showed the localization of SjPrx-4 inside the egg, on the tegument and in the parenchyma of the adult worm. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results showed that rSjPrx-4 has 83.3% sensitivity and 87.8% specificity. Its diagnostic potential was further evaluated in combination with recombinant SjTPx-1 protein, yielding an improved sensitivity and specificity of 90% and 92.7%, respectively. Conclusions
These results suggest that SjPrx-4 plays a role as an antioxidant dealing with oxidative stresses of S. japonicum, and its diagnostic potential improved by coupling it with SjTPx-1 is a proof for developing a serological test with better diagnostic performance for human schistosomiasis
On the cubic interactions of massive and partially-massless higher spins in (A)dS
Cubic interactions of massive and partially-massless totally-symmetric
higher-spin fields in any constant-curvature background of dimension greater
than three are investigated. Making use of the ambient-space formalism, the
consistency condition for the traceless and transverse parts of the
parity-invariant interactions is recast into a system of partial differential
equations. The latter can be explicitly solved for given s_1-s_2-s_3 couplings
and the 2-2-2 and 3-3-2 examples are provided in detail for general choices of
the masses. On the other hand, the general solutions for the interactions
involving massive and massless fields are expressed in a compact form as
generating functions of all the consistent couplings. The St\"uckelberg
formulation of the cubic interactions as well as their massless limits are also

Finite Element Analysis of Electrically Excited Quartz Tuning Fork Devices
Quartz Tuning Fork (QTF)-based Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) is an important field of research. A suitable model for the QTF is important to obtain quantitative measurements with these devices. Analytical models have the limitation of being based on the double cantilever configuration. In this paper, we present an electromechanical finite element model of the QTF electrically excited with two free prongs. The model goes beyond the state-of-the-art of numerical simulations currently found in the literature for this QTF configuration. We present the first numerical analysis of both the electrical and mechanical behavior of QTF devices. Experimental measurements obtained with 10 units of the same model of QTF validate the finite element model with a good agreement
