A stochastic user-operator assignment game for microtransit service evaluation: A case study of Kussbus in Luxembourg
This paper proposes a stochastic variant of the stable matching model from
Rasulkhani and Chow [1] which allows microtransit operators to evaluate their
operation policy and resource allocations. The proposed model takes into
account the stochastic nature of users' travel utility perception, resulting in
a probabilistic stable operation cost allocation outcome to design ticket price
and ridership forecasting. We applied the model for the operation policy
evaluation of a microtransit service in Luxembourg and its border area. The
methodology for the model parameters estimation and calibration is developed.
The results provide useful insights for the operator and the government to

A dynamic ridesharing dispatch and idle vehicle repositioning strategy with integrated transit transfers
We propose a ridesharing strategy with integrated transit in which a private
on-demand mobility service operator may drop off a passenger directly
door-to-door, commit to dropping them at a transit station or picking up from a
transit station, or to both pickup and drop off at two different stations with
different vehicles. We study the effectiveness of online solution algorithms
for this proposed strategy. Queueing-theoretic vehicle dispatch and idle
vehicle relocation algorithms are customized for the problem. Several
experiments are conducted first with a synthetic instance to design and test
the effectiveness of this integrated solution method, the influence of
different model parameters, and measure the benefit of such cooperation.
Results suggest that rideshare vehicle travel time can drop by 40-60%
consistently while passenger journey times can be reduced by 50-60% when demand
is high. A case study of Long Island commuters to New York City (NYC) suggests
having the proposed operating strategy can substantially cut user journey times
and operating costs by up to 54% and 60% each for a range of 10-30 taxis
initiated per zone. This result shows that there are settings where such
service is highly warranted
The housing choices and preferences of older vacationers in southern China
Based on an existing dataset, this study examined the housing choices and preferences of Chinese older vacationers to the Pearl River Delta, and compared the effects of the personal attributes of the retiree and near-retiree vacationers oil such preferences. Findings showed that the options, location and design of housing available in the market determined the housing preferences of these vacationers. The general housing preference patterns between the two groups of vacationers were similar to each other. However, their personal attributes had significant associations with their housing preference patterns. A user-operator assignment game with heterogeneous user groups for empirical evaluation of a microtransit service in Luxembourg
We tackle the problem of evaluating the impact of different operation
policies on the performance of a microtransit service. This study is the first
empirical application using the stable matching modeling framework to evaluate
different operation cost allocation and pricing mechanisms on microtransit
service. We extend the deterministic stable matching model to a stochastic
reliability-based one to consider user's heterogeneous perceptions of utility
on the service routes. The proposed model is applied to the evaluation of
Kussbus microtransit service in Luxembourg. We found that the current Kussbus
operation is not a stable outcome. By reducing their route operating costs of
50%, it is expected to increase the ridership of 10%. If Kussbus can reduce
in-vehicle travel time on their own by 20%, they can significantly increase
profit several folds from the baseline
Economics of neuraminidase inhibitor stock piling for pandemic influenza, Singapore.
We compared strategies for stock piling neuraminidase inhibitors to treat and prevent influenza in Singapore. Cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analyses, with Monte Carlo simulations, were used to determine economic outcomes. A pandemic in a population of 4.2 million would result in an estimated 525-1,775 deaths, 10,700-38,600 hospitalization days, and economic costs of 0.7 dollars to 2.2 billion Singapore dollars. The treatment-only strategy had optimal economic benefits: stock piles of antiviral agents for 40% of the population would save an estimated 418 lives and 414 million dollars, at a cost of 52.6 million dollars per shelf-life cycle of the stock pile. Prophylaxis was economically beneficial in high-risk subpopulations, which account for 78% of deaths, and in pandemics in which the death rate was >0.6%. Prophylaxis for pandemics with a 5% case-fatality rate would save 50,000 lives and 81 billion dollars. These models can help policymakers weigh the options for pandemic planning
Efficient selection of discriminative genes from microarray gene expression data for cancer diagnosis
A new mutual information (MI)-based feature-selection method to solve the so-called large p and small n problem experienced in a microarray gene expression-based data is presented. First, a grid-based feature clustering algorithm is introduced to eliminate redundant features. A huge gene set is then greatly reduced in a very efficient way. As a result, the computational efficiency of the whole feature-selection process is substantially enhanced. Second, MI is directly estimated using quadratic MI together with Parzen window density estimators. This approach is able to deliver reliable results even when only a small pattern set is available. Also, a new MI-based criterion is proposed to avoid the highly redundant selection results in a systematic way. At last, attributed to the direct estimation of MI, the appropriate selected feature subsets can be reasonably determined. © 2005 IEEE

Differential effect of Taekwondo training on knee muscle strength and reactive and static balance control in children with developmental coordination disorder: A randomized controlled trial
This randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the effect of short-term intensive TKD training on the isokinetic knee muscle strength and reactive and static balance control of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Among the 44 children with DCD (mean age: 7.6 ± 1.3 years) recruited, 21 were randomly assigned to undergo daily TKD training for 1. h over three consecutive months, with the remaining 23 children being assigned to the DCD control group. Eighteen typically developing children (mean age: 7.2 ± 1.0 years) received no training as normal controls. Knee extensor and flexor muscle strength and reactive and static balance control were assessed using an isokinetic machine (with low, moderate and high movement velocities), a motor control test (MCT) and a unilateral stance test (UST), respectively. A repeated measures MANCOVA revealed a significant group through time interaction effect in isokinetic outcomes at 180°/s and in the UST outcome. Post hoc analysis demonstrated that DCD-TKD children's isokinetic knee muscle strength, specifically at 180°/s, was as high as that of the normal control children (p>0.0083) after TKD training. Moreover, UST body sway velocity was slower in the DCD-TKD group than in the DCD control group (p0.05) after TKD training. However, no such improvement in balance was observed in the MCT (p>0.025). The results show that children with DCD who undergo a 3-month program of intensive TKD training experience improvements in isokinetic knee muscle strength at 180°/s and static single-leg standing balance control, but do not benefit from improved reactive balance control. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.postprin
