Spatial variations of ionospheric conductivity and radar auroral amplitude in the eastward electrojet region during pre-substorm conditions
The dependence of auroral backscatter amplitude on different ionospheric parameters (conductivity, current density, electric field) is studied by means of data recorded by STARE (Scandinavian Twin Auroral Radar Experiment), the two-dimensional Scandinavian Magnetometer Array (SMA), and auroral all-sky cameras. The observations were made on 16 March 1978 during pre-substorm conditions in the region of the eastward polar electrojet. The paper shows that in this event the auroral backscatter amplitudes in the 140 MHz frequency band were controlled mainly by spatial variations in the electron density or conductivity inside the back-scatter volume. To a certain extent also a linear relationship between backscatter amplitude and ionospheric current density was found but it is regarded as a special case of a more general relationship between electron density and backscatter amplitude. A stable discontinuity in the Hall conductivity over the most equatorward auroral arc was deduced from the data: On the equatorward side the conductivity was 3-5 times higher than on the nearby poleward side. Our conclusions are discussed in the light of some previously published results on the same subject.

Small Angle X-Ray Scattering Studies of Mitochondrial Glutaminase C Reveal Extended Flexible Regions, and Link Oligomeric State with Enzyme Activity
Glutaminase C is a key metabolic enzyme, which is unregulated in many cancer systems and believed to play a central role in the Warburg effect, whereby cancer cells undergo changes to an altered metabolic profile. A long-standing hypothesis links enzymatic activity to the protein oligomeric state, hence the study of the solution behavior in general and the oligomer state in particular of glutaminase C is important for the understanding of the mechanism of protein activation and inhibition. In this report, this is extensively investigated in correlation to enzyme concentration or phosphate level, using a high-throughput microfluidic-mixing chip for the SAXS data collection, and we confirm that the oligomeric state correlates with activity. The in-depth solution behavior analysis further reveals the structural behavior of flexible regions of the protein in the dimeric, tetrameric and octameric state and investigates the C-terminal influence on the enzyme solution behavior. Our data enable SAXS-based rigid body modeling of the full-length tetramer states, thereby presenting the first ever experimentally derived structural model of mitochondrial glutaminase C including the N- and C-termini of the enzyme
The helium trimer with soft-core potentials
The helium trimer is studied using two- and three-body soft-core potentials.
Realistic helium-helium potentials present an extremely strong short-range
repulsion and support a single, very shallow, bound state. The description of
systems with more than two helium atoms is difficult due to the very large
cancellation between kinetic and potential energy. We analyze the possibility
of describing the three helium system in the ultracold regime using a gaussian
representation of a widely used realistic potential, the LM2M2 interaction.
However, in order to describe correctly the trimer ground state a three-body
force has to be added to the gaussian interaction. With this potential model
the two bound states of the trimer and the low energy scattering helium-dimer
phase shifts obtained with the LM2M2 potential are well reproduced.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Few-Body System
Spin-dependent effective interactions for halo nuclei
We discuss the spin-dependence of the effective two-body interactions
appropriate for three-body computations. The only reasonable choice seems to be
the fine and hyperfine interactions known for atomic electrons interacting with
the nucleus. One exception is the nucleon-nucleon interaction imposing a
different type of symmetry. We use the two-neutron halo nucleus 11Li as
illustration. We demonstrate that models with the wrong spin-dependence are
basically without predictive power. The Pauli forbidden core and valence states
must be consistently treated.Comment: TeX file, 6 pages, 3 postscript figure
Human Blood Lipoprotein Predictions from 1H NMR Spectra:Protocol, Model Performances, and Cage of Covariance
Lipoprotein subfractions are biomarkers for the early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. The reference method, ultracentrifugation, for measuring lipoproteins is time-consuming, and there is a need to develop a rapid method for cohort screenings. This study presents partial least-squares regression models developed using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and concentrations of lipoproteins as measured by ultracentrifugation on 316 healthy Danes. This study explores, for the first time, different regions of the 1H NMR spectrum representing signals of molecules in lipoprotein particles and different lipid species to develop parsimonious, reliable, and optimal prediction models. A total of 65 lipoprotein main and subfractions were predictable with high accuracy, Q2 of >0.6, using an optimal spectral region (1.4-0.6 ppm) containing methylene and methyl signals from lipids. The models were subsequently tested on an independent cohort of 290 healthy Swedes with predicted and reference values matching by up to 85-95%. In addition, an open software tool was developed to predict lipoproteins concentrations in human blood from standardized 1H NMR spectral recordings
Soft X-ray resonant scattering study of single-crystal LaSrMnO
Soft X-ray resonant scattering studies at the Mn - and
the La - edges of single-crystal LaSrMnO are
reported. At low temperatures, below K, energy scans
with a fixed momentum transfer at the \emph{A}-type antiferromagnetic (0 0 1)
reflection around the Mn -edges with incident linear
and polarizations show strong resonant enhancements. The
splitting of the energy spectra around the Mn -edges may
indicate the presence of a mixed valence state, e.g., Mn/Mn. The
relative intensities of the resonance and the clear shoulder-feature as well as
the strong incident and polarization dependences strongly
indicate its complex electronic origin. Unexpected enhancement of the charge
Bragg (0 0 2) reflection at the La -edges with
polarization has been observed up to 300 K, with an anomaly appearing around
the orbital-ordering transition temperature, K,
suggesting a strong coupling (competition) between them.Comment: Accepted by European Physical Journal
Two-tape finite automata with quantum and classical states
{\it Two-way finite automata with quantum and classical states} (2QCFA) were
introduced by Ambainis and Watrous, and {\it two-way two-tape deterministic
finite automata} (2TFA) were introduced by Rabin and Scott. In this paper we
study 2TFA and propose a new computing model called {\it two-way two-tape
finite automata with quantum and classical states} (2TQCFA). First, we give
efficient 2TFA algorithms for recognizing languages which can be recognized by
2QCFA. Second, we give efficient 2TQCFA algorithms to recognize several
languages whose status vis-a-vis 2QCFA have been posed as open questions, such
as . Third, we show that
can be recognized by {\it -tape
deterministic finite automata} (TFA). Finally, we introduce {\it
-tape automata with quantum and classical states} (TQCFA) and prove that
can be recognized by TQCFA.Comment: 25 page
Low-Energy Universality in Atomic and Nuclear Physics
An effective field theory developed for systems interacting through
short-range interactions can be applied to systems of cold atoms with a large
scattering length and to nucleons at low energies. It is therefore the ideal
tool to analyze the universal properties associated with the Efimov effect in
three- and four-body systems. In this "progress report", we will discuss recent
results obtained within this framework and report on progress regarding the
inclusion of higher order corrections associated with the finite range of the
underlying interaction.Comment: Commissioned article for Few-Body Systems, 47 pp, 16 fig
