BPS branes in discrete torsion orbifolds

We investigate D-branes in a Z_3xZ_3 orbifold with discrete torsion. For this class of orbifolds the only known objects which couple to twisted RR potentials have been non-BPS branes. By using more general gluing conditions we construct here a D-brane which is BPS and couples to RR potentials in the twisted and in the untwisted sectors.Comment: 20 pages, LaTe

    D-brane Spectrum and K-theory Constraints of D=4, N=1 Orientifolds

    Get PDF
We study the spectrum of stable BPS and non-BPS D-branes in Z_2 x Z_2 orientifolds for all choices of discrete torsion between the orbifold and orientifold generators. We compute the torsion K-theory charges in these D=4, N=1 orientifold models directly from worldsheet conformal field theory, and compare with the K-theory constraints obtained indirectly using D-brane probes. The K-theory torsion charges derived here provide non-trivial constraints on string model building. We also discuss regions of stability for non-BPS D-branes in these examples.Comment: 40 pages, 5 table

Dynamic Approximate Vertex Cover and Maximum Matching

    Get PDF
We consider the problem of maintaining a large matching or a small vertex cover in a dynamically changing graph. Each update to the graph is either an edge deletion or an edge insertion. We give the first randomized data structure that simultaneously achieves a constant approximation factor and handles a sequence of k updates in k. polylog(n) time. Previous data structures require a polynomial amount of computation per update. The starting point of our construction is a distributed algorithm of Parnas and Ron (Theor. Comput. Sci. 2007), which they designed for their sublinear-time approximation algorithm for the vertex cover size. This leads us to wonder whether there are other connections between sublinear algorithms and dynamic data structures.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant 0732334)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant 0728645)Marie Curie International (Reintegration Grant PIRG03-GA-2008-231077)Israel Science Foundation (Grant 1147/09)Israel Science Foundation (Grant 1675/09

Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in pregnancy: does foetal viability matter?

    Get PDF
With the increasing use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for adults with acute hypoxic respiratory failure, the indications for its use have expanded. We wanted to share the results of a recent case from our institution, of a woman who experienced respiratory failure secondary to hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). HG is a rare complication of pregnancy (0.3% to 2.0% of pregnancies), resulting in uncontrolled or excessive nausea and vomiting with dehydration and weight loss, typically in the first to mid second trimester, and is a diagnosis of exclusion

Kaluza-Klein Cosmology With Modified Holographic Dark Energy

We investigate the compact Kaluza-Klein cosmology in which modified holographic dark energy is interacting with dark matter. Using this scenario, we evaluate equation of state parameter as well as equation of evolution of the modified holographic dark energy. Further, it is shown that the generalized second law of thermodynamics holds without any constraint.Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in Gen. Relativ. Gravi

String Loop Corrections to Kahler Potentials in Orientifolds

We determine one-loop string corrections to Kahler potentials in type IIB orientifold compactifications with either N=1 or N=2 supersymmetry, including D-brane moduli, by evaluating string scattering amplitudes.Comment: 80 pages, 4 figure

Statefinder Parameters for Different Dark Energy Models with Variable G Correction in Kaluza-Klein Cosmology

In this work, we have calculated the deceleration parameter, statefinder parameters and EoS parameters for different dark energy models with variable GG correction in homogeneous, isotropic and non-flat universe for Kaluza-Klein Cosmology. The statefinder parameters have been obtained in terms of some observable parameters like dimensionless density parameter, EoS parameter and Hubble parameter for holographic dark energy, new agegraphic dark energy and generalized Chaplygin gas models.Comment: 9 pages, no figure, accepted for publication in IJTP. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1104.2366 by other author

Chiral effective field theories of the strong interactions

Effective field theories of the strong interactions based on the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD provide a model-independent approach to low-energy hadron physics. We give a brief introduction to mesonic and baryonic chiral perturbation theory and discuss a number of applications. We also consider the effective field theory including vector and axial-vector mesons.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, proceedings of "Many-Body Structure of Strongly Interacting Systems", Mainz, Germany, Feb. 23-25 201

Anomalous Flux Flow Resistivity in Two Gap Superconductor MgB_2

The flux flow resistivity associated with purely viscous motion of vortices in high-quality MgB_2 was measured by microwave surface impedance. Flux flow resistivity exhibits unusual field dependence with strong enhancement at low field, which is markedly different to conventional s-wave superconductors. A crossover field which separates two distinct flux flow regimes having different flux flow resistivity slopes was clearly observed in H//ab-plane. The unusual H-dependence indicates that two very differently sized superconducting gaps in MgB_2 manifest in the vortex dynamics and almost equally contribute to energy dissipation. The carrier scattering rate in two different bands is also discussed with the present results, compared to heat capacity and thermal conductivity results.Comment: 4 pages, 3figure
