    Deconvolution of directly precipitating and trap-precipitating electrons in solar flare hard x-rays. III.Yohkoh hard x-ray telescope data analysis

    We analyze the footpoint separation d and flux asymmetry A of magnetically conjugate double footpoint sources in hard X-ray images from the Yohkoh Hard X-Ray Telescope (HXT). The data set of 54 solar flares includes all events simultaneously observed with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) in high time resolution mode. From the CGRO data we deconvolved the direct-precipitation and trap-precipitation components previously (in Paper II). Using the combined measurements from CGRO and HXT, we develop an asymmetric trap model that allows us to quantify the relative fractions of four different electron components, i.e., the ratios of direct-precipitating (q_P1, q_P2) and trap-precipitating electrons (q_T1, q_T2) at both magnetically conjugate footpoints. We find mean ratios of q_P1=0.14+/-0.06, q_P2=0.26+/-0.10, and q_T=q_T1+q_T2=0.60+/-0.13. We assume an isotropic pitch-angle distribution at the acceleration site and double-sided trap precipitation (q_T2/q_T1=q_P2/q_P1) to determine the conjugate loss-cone angles (alpha_1=42^deg+/-11^deg and alpha_2=52^deg+/-10^deg) and magnetic mirror ratiosat both footpoints (R_1=1.6,...,4.0 and R_2=1.3,...,2.5). From the relative displacement of footpoint sources we also measure altitude differences of hard X-ray emission at different energies, which are found to decrease systematically with higher energies, with a statistical height difference of h_Lo-h_M1=980+/-250 km and h_M1-h_M2=310+/-300 km between the three lower HXT energy channels (Lo, M1, M2

    Preventing pain on injection of propofol: A comparison between lignocaine pre-treatment and lignocaine added to propofol

    Publisher's copy made available with the permission of the publisherA randomized double-blind study compared two methods of preventing the pain from injection of propofol, lignocaine pre-treatment followed by propofol and lignocaine added to propofol. One hundred patients received a 4 ml solution intravenously with a venous tourniquet for 1 minute, followed by propofol mixed with 2 ml of solution. Patients were divided into two treatment groups of 50 patients each: 4 ml 1% lignocaine pre-treatment followed by propofol and 2 ml saline, or 4 ml saline followed by propofol and 2 ml 2% lignocaine. Pain was assessed with a 100 mm visual analogue scale after induction and in recovery. The incidence of injection pain was 8% in the propofol mixed with lignocaine group, and 28% in the lignocaine pre-treatment group. This difference is statistically significant (P=0.017). For those patients who had pain, the mean pain score was 26.5 on induction for the propofol with lignocaine group (n=4), while the mean score was 44.4 for the pre-treatment group (n=13). The difference was not statistically significant (P=0.25). None of the propofol mixed with lignocaine group recalled pain, while 13 of the pre-treatment group did so. Lignocaine pre-treatment does not improve the immediate or the recalled comfort of patients during propofol induction when compared to lignocaine added to propofol.     Phonon-drag effects on thermoelectric power

    We carry out a calculation of the phonon-drag contribution SgS_g to the thermoelectric power of bulk semiconductors and quantum well structures for the first time using the balance equation transport theory extended to the weakly nonuniform systems. Introducing wavevector and phonon-mode dependent relaxation times due to phonon-phonon interactions, the formula obtained can be used not only at low temperatures where the phonon mean free path is determined by boundary scattering, but also at high temperatures. In the linear transport limit, SgS_g is equivalent to the result obtained from the Boltzmann equation with a relaxation time approximation. The theory is applied to experiments and agreement is found between the theoretical predictions and experimental results. The role of hot-electron effects in SgS_g is discussed.     Thermoelectric power of nondegenerate Kane semiconductors under the conditions of mutual electron-phonon drag in a high electric field

    The thermoelectric power of nondegenerate Kane semiconductors with due regard for the electron and phonon heating, and their thermal and mutual drags is investigated. The electron spectrum is taken in the Kane two-band form. It is shown that the nonparabolicity of electron spectrum significantly influences the magnitude of the thermoelectric power and leads to a change of its sign and dependence on the heating electric field.     Urinary arsenic profiles reveal exposures to inorganic arsenic from private drinking water supplies in Cornwall, UK

    Private water supplies (PWS) in Cornwall, South West England exceeded the current WHO guidance value and UK prescribed concentration or value (PCV) for arsenic of 10 μg/L in 5% of properties surveyed (n = 497). In this follow-up study, the first of its kind in the UK, volunteers (n = 207) from 127 households who used their PWS for drinking, provided urine and drinking water samples for total As determination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and urinary As speciation by high performance liquid chromatography ICP-MS (HPLC-ICP-MS). Arsenic concentrations exceeding 10 μg/L were found in the PWS of 10% of the volunteers. Unadjusted total urinary As concentrations were poorly correlated (Spearman’s ρ = 0.36 (P < 0.001)) with PWS As largely due to the use of spot urine samples and the dominance of arsenobetaine (AB) from seafood sources. However, the osmolality adjusted sum, U-AsIMM, of urinary inorganic As species, arsenite (AsIII) and arsenate (AsV), and their metabolites, methylarsonate (MA) and dimethylarsinate (DMA), was found to strongly correlate (Spearman’s ρ: 0.62 (P < 0.001)) with PWS As, indicating private water supplies as the dominant source of inorganic As exposure in the study population of PWS users

    Least Squares and Shrinkage Estimation under Bimonotonicity Constraints

    In this paper we describe active set type algorithms for minimization of a smooth function under general order constraints, an important case being functions on the set of bimonotone r-by-s matrices. These algorithms can be used, for instance, to estimate a bimonotone regression function via least squares or (a smooth approximation of) least absolute deviations. Another application is shrinkage estimation in image denoising or, more generally, regression problems with two ordinal factors after representing the data in a suitable basis which is indexed by pairs (i,j) in {1,...,r}x{1,...,s}.
