Hydrogen plasma reduction of supported metal salts
During the last thirty years, in the electronics industry, there has been increasing interest in the use of partially ionised plasmas for the processing of surfaces. A large amount of work has been carried out on plasma etching using halogen plasmas. However, halogen plasmas cause both environmental and handling problems and as a result hydrogen plasmas are often used as a substitute. Gold films are very important in the electronics industry. Several techniques have been proposed for the deposition of conducting gold films, including CVD, PVD, and Sol-gel techniques. In the work outlined in this thesis, a hydrogen plasma was generated at 0.1 torr using an RF power supply, in order to modify the surfaces of gold (III) chloride films, spin coated onto either a glass or nylon substrate. It has been postulated that if hydrogen atoms will react with a material in a plasma to form a volatile compound (eg. HCl), then the surface will be modified. The aim of this work was to create a conducting gold film, by removal of chlorine species from the original spin coated film, through use of a hydrogen plasma. The results of this work demonstrate that chlorine removal from the original film, by use of a hydrogen plasma, is a function of the concentration of the spin coated AuCl(_3); the plasma treatment time; and the plasma power. The substrate onto which the AuCl(_3) is deposited also appears to play an important role. The deposition method proposed in this thesis is a quick, cheap and easy way to deposit thin gold films
A Mathematical Model of Liver Cell Aggregation In Vitro
The behavior of mammalian cells within three-dimensional structures is an area of intense biological research and underpins the efforts of tissue engineers to regenerate human tissues for clinical applications. In the particular case of hepatocytes (liver cells), the formation of spheroidal multicellular aggregates has been shown to improve cell viability and functionality compared to traditional monolayer culture techniques. We propose a simple mathematical model for the early stages of this aggregation process, when cell clusters form on the surface of the extracellular matrix (ECM) layer on which they are seeded. We focus on interactions between the cells and the viscoelastic ECM substrate. Governing equations for the cells, culture medium, and ECM are derived using the principles of mass and momentum balance. The model is then reduced to a system of four partial differential equations, which are investigated analytically and numerically. The model predicts that provided cells are seeded at a suitable density, aggregates with clearly defined boundaries and a spatially uniform cell density on the interior will form. While the mechanical properties of the ECM do not appear to have a significant effect, strong cell-ECM interactions can inhibit, or possibly prevent, the formation of aggregates. The paper concludes with a discussion of our key findings and suggestions for future work
Antecedents and outcomes of consumer environmentally friendly attitudes and behaviour
With the intensification of problems relating to the environment, a growing number of consumers are becoming more ecologically conscious in their preferences and purchases of goods. This paper presents the results of a study conducted among 500 Cypriot consumers, focusing on the factors that shape consumer environmental attitudes and behaviour, as well as on the resulting outcomes. The findings confirmed that both the inward and outward environmental attitudes of a consumer are positively influenced by his/her degree of collectivism, long-term orientation, political involvement, deontology, and law obedience, but have no connection with liberalism. The adoption of an inward environmental attitude was also found to be conducive to green purchasing behaviour that ultimately leads to high product satisfaction. On the other hand, an outward environmental attitude facilitates the adoption of a general environmental behaviour, which is responsible for greater satisfaction with life. The findings of the study have important implications for shaping effective company offerings to consumers in target markets, as well as formulating appropriate policies at the governmental level to enhance environmental sensitivity among citizens
An optimally efficient technique for the solution of systems of nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations
This paper describes a new software tool that has been developed for the efficient solution of systems of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of parabolic type. Specifically, the software is designed to provide optimal computational performance for multiscale problems, which require highly stable, implicit, time-stepping schemes combined with a parallel implementation of adaptivity in both space and time. By combining these implicit, adaptive discretizations with an optimally efficient nonlinear multigrid solver it is possible to obtain computational solutions to a very high resolution with relatively modest computational resources. The first half of the paper describes the numerical methods that lie behind the software, along with details of their implementation, whilst the second half of the paper illustrates the flexibility and robustness of the tool by applying it to two very different example problems. These represent models of a thin film flow of a spreading viscous droplet and a multi-phase-field model of tumour growth. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges of obtaining highly scalable parallel performance for a software tool that combines both local mesh adaptivity, requiring efficient dynamic load-balancing, and a multigrid solver, requiring careful implementation of coarse grid operations and inter-grid transfer operations in parallel
A Pathway to Precision Medicine for Aboriginal Australians: A Study Protocol
Published: 21 June 2021(1) Background: Genomic precision medicine (PM) utilises people’s genomic data to inform the delivery of preventive and therapeutic health care. PM has not been well-established for use with people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestry due to the paucity of genomic data from these communities. We report the development of a new protocol using co-design methods to enhance the potential use of PM for Aboriginal Australians. (2) Methods: This iterative qualitative study consists of five main phases. Phase-I will ensure appropriate governance of the project and establishment of a Project Advisory Committee. Following an initial consultation with the Aboriginal community, Phase-II will invite community members to participate in co-design workshops. In Phase-III, the Chief Investigators will participate in co-design workshops and document generated ideas. The notes shall be analysed thematically in Phase-IV with Aboriginal community representatives, and the summary will be disseminated to the communities. In Phase-V, we will evaluate the co-design process and adapt our protocol for the use in partnership with other communities. (3) Discussion: This study protocol represents a crucial first step to ensure that PM research is relevant and acceptable to Aboriginal Australians. Fertility preservation for female patients with childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer:recommendations from the PanCareLIFE Consortium and the International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group
Female patients with childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer are at increased risk for fertility impairment when treatment adversely affects the function of reproductive organs. Patients and their families desire biological children but substantial variations in clinical practice guidelines reduce consistent and timely implementation of effective interventions for fertility preservation across institutions. As part of the PanCareLIFE Consortium, and in collaboration with the International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group, we reviewed the current literature and developed a clinical practice guideline for fertility preservation in female patients who were diagnosed with childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer at age 25 years or younger, including guidance on risk assessment and available methods for fertility preservation. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation methodology was used to grade the available evidence and to form the recommendations. This clinical practice guideline leverages existing evidence and international expertise to develop transparent recommendations that are easy to use to facilitate the care of female patients with childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer who are at high risk for fertility impairment. A complete review of the existing evidence, including a quality assessment, transparent reporting of the guideline panel's decisions, and achievement of global interdisciplinary consensus, is an important result of this intensive collaboration.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
Interindividual variation in ovarian reserve after gonadotoxic treatment in female childhood cancer survivors – a genome-wide association study:results from PanCareLIFE
Objective: To discover new variants associated with low ovarian reserve after gonadotoxic treatment among adult female childhood cancer survivors using a genome-wide association study approach. Design: Genome-wide association study. Setting: Not applicable. Patients: A discovery cohort of adult female childhood cancer survivors from the pan-European PanCareLIFE cohort (n = 743; median age: 25.8 years), excluding those who received bilateral ovarian irradiation, bilateral oophorectomy, central nervous system or total body irradiation, or stem cell transplantation. Replication was attempted in the US-based St. Jude Lifetime Cohort (n = 391; median age: 31.3 years). Exposure: Female childhood cancer survivors are at risk of therapy-related gonadal impairment. Alkylating agents are well-established risk factors, and the interindividual variability in gonadotoxicity may be explained by genetic polymorphisms. Data were collected in real-life conditions, and cyclophosphamide equivalent doses were used to quantify alkylation agent exposure. Main Outcome Measure: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels served as a proxy for ovarian function, and the findings were combined in a meta-analysis. Results: Three genome-wide significant (<5.0 × 10−8) and 16 genome-wide suggestive (<5.0 × 10−6) loci were associated with log-transformed AMH levels, adjusted for cyclophosphamide equivalent dose of alkylating agents, age at diagnosis, and age at study in the PanCareLIFE cohort. On the basis of the effect allele frequency (EAF) (>0.01 if not genome-wide significant), and biologic relevance, 15 single nucleotide polymorphisms were selected for replication. None of the single nucleotide polymorphisms were statistically significantly associated with AMH levels. A meta-analysis indicated that rs78861946 was associated with borderline genome-wide statistical significance (reference/effect allele: C/T; effect allele frequency: 0.04, beta (SE): −0.484 (0.091). Conclusion: This study found no genetic variants associated with a lower ovarian reserve after gonadotoxic treatment because the findings of this genome-wide association study were not statistically significant replicated in the replication cohort. Suggestive evidence for the potential importance of 1 variant is briefly discussed, but the lack of statistical significance calls for larger cohort sizes. Because the population of childhood cancer survivors is increasing, large-scale and systematic research is needed to identify genetic variants that could aid predictive risk models of gonadotoxicity as well as fertility preservation options for childhood cancer survivors.</p
Linking Distributive and Procedural Justice to Employee Engagement Through Social Exchange: A Field Study in India
Research linking justice perceptions to employee outcomes has referred to social exchange as its central theoretical premise. We tested a conceptual model linking distributive and procedural justice to employee engagement through social exchange mediators, namely, perceived organizational support and psychological contract, among 238 managers and executives from manufacturing and service sector firms in India. Findings suggest that perceived organizational support mediated the relationship between distributive justice and employee engagement, and both perceived organizational support and psychological contract mediated the relationship between procedural justice and employee engagement. Developing a predictive modelling capacity for a climate change-vulnerable blanket bog habitat: Assessing 1961-1990 baseline relationships
Aim: Understanding the spatial distribution of high priority habitats and
developing predictive models using climate and environmental variables to
replicate these distributions are desirable conservation goals. The aim of this
study was to model and elucidate the contributions of climate and topography to
the distribution of a priority blanket bog habitat in Ireland, and to examine how
this might inform the development of a climate change predictive capacity for
peat-lands in Ireland.
Methods: Ten climatic and two topographic variables were recorded for grid
cells with a spatial resolution of 1010 km, covering 87% of the mainland
land surface of Ireland. Presence-absence data were matched to these variables
and generalised linear models (GLMs) fitted to identify the main climatic and
terrain predictor variables for occurrence of the habitat. Candidate predictor
variables were screened for collinearity, and the accuracy of the final fitted GLM
was evaluated using fourfold cross-validation based on the area under the curve
(AUC) derived from a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) plot. The GLM
predicted habitat occurrence probability maps were mapped against the actual
distributions using GIS techniques.
Results: Despite the apparent parsimony of the initial GLM using only climatic
variables, further testing indicated collinearity among temperature and precipitation
variables for example. Subsequent elimination of the collinear variables and
inclusion of elevation data produced an excellent performance based on the AUC
scores of the final GLM. Mean annual temperature and total mean annual
precipitation in combination with elevation range were the most powerful
explanatory variable group among those explored for the presence of blanket
bog habitat.
Main conclusions: The results confirm that this habitat distribution in general
can be modelled well using the non-collinear climatic and terrain variables tested
at the grid resolution used. Mapping the GLM-predicted distribution to the
observed distribution produced useful results in replicating the projected
occurrence of the habitat distribution over an extensive area. The methods
