Kinetic Roughening in Deposition with Suppressed Screening
Models of irreversible surface deposition of k-mers on a linear lattice, with
screening suppressed by disallowing overhangs blocking large gaps, are studied
by extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the temporal and size dependence of the
growing interface width. Despite earlier finding that for such models the
deposit density tends to increase away from the substrate, our numerical
results place them clearly within the standard KPZ universality class.Comment: nine pages, plain TeX (4 figures not included
Open charm and charmonium production at relativistic energies
We calculate open charm and charmonium production in reactions at
= 200 GeV within the hadron-string dynamics (HSD) transport approach
employing open charm cross sections from and reactions that are
fitted to results from PYTHIA and scaled in magnitude to the available
experimental data. Charmonium dissociation with nucleons and formed mesons to
open charm ( pairs) is included dynamically. The 'comover'
dissociation cross sections are described by a simple phase-space model
including a single free parameter, i.e. an interaction strength , that
is fitted to the suppression data for collisions at SPS
energies. As a novel feature we implement the backward channels for charmonium
reproduction by channels employing detailed balance. From our
dynamical calculations we find that the charmonium recreation is comparable to
the dissociation by 'comoving' mesons. This leads to the final result that the
total suppression at = 200 GeV as a function of centrality
is slightly less than the suppression seen at SPS energies by the NA50
Collaboration, where the 'comover' dissociation is substantial and the backward
channels play no role. Furthermore, even in case that all directly produced
mesons dissociate immediately (or are not formed as a mesonic state),
a sizeable amount of charmonia is found asymptotically due to the + meson channels in central collisions of at =
200 GeV which, however, is lower than the yield expected from binary
scaling of collisions.Comment: 42 pages, including 14 eps figures, discussions extended and

Atomic X-ray Spectroscopy of Accreting Black Holes
Current astrophysical research suggests that the most persistently luminous
objects in the Universe are powered by the flow of matter through accretion
disks onto black holes. Accretion disk systems are observed to emit copious
radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum, each energy band providing
access to rather distinct regimes of physical conditions and geometric scale.
X-ray emission probes the innermost regions of the accretion disk, where
relativistic effects prevail. While this has been known for decades, it also
has been acknowledged that inferring physical conditions in the relativistic
regime from the behavior of the X-ray continuum is problematic and not
satisfactorily constraining. With the discovery in the 1990s of iron X-ray
lines bearing signatures of relativistic distortion came the hope that such
emission would more firmly constrain models of disk accretion near black holes,
as well as provide observational criteria by which to test general relativity
in the strong field limit. Here we provide an introduction to this phenomenon.
While the presentation is intended to be primarily tutorial in nature, we aim
also to acquaint the reader with trends in current research. To achieve these
ends, we present the basic applications of general relativity that pertain to
X-ray spectroscopic observations of black hole accretion disk systems, focusing
on the Schwarzschild and Kerr solutions to the Einstein field equations. To
this we add treatments of the fundamental concepts associated with the
theoretical and modeling aspects of accretion disks, as well as relevant topics

Exploring flavor structure of supersymmetry breaking from rare B decays and unitarity triangle
We study effects of supersymmetric particles in various rare B decay
processes as well as in the unitarity triangle analysis. We consider three
different supersymmetric models, the minimal supergravity, SU(5) SUSY GUT with
right-handed neutrinos, and the minimal supersymmetric standard model with U(2)
flavor symmetry. In the SU(5) SUSY GUT with right-handed neutrinos, we consider
two cases of the mass matrix of the right-handed neutrinos. We calculate direct
and mixing-induced CP asymmetries in the b to s gamma decay and CP asymmetry in
B_d to phi K_S as well as the B_s--anti-B_s mixing amplitude for the unitarity
triangle analysis in these models. We show that large deviations are possible
for the SU(5) SUSY GUT and the U(2) model. The pattern and correlations of
deviations from the standard model will be useful to discriminate the different
SUSY models in future B experiments.Comment: revtex4, 36 pages, 10 figure
J/psi production in relativistic heavy ion collisions from a multi-phase transport model
Using A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, we study J/psi production from
interactions between charm and anti-charm quarks in initial parton phase and
between D and Dbar mesons in final hadron phase of relativistic heavy ion
collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Including also the
inverse reactions of J/psi absorption by gluons and light mesons, we find that
the net number of J/psi from the parton and hadron phases is smaller than that
expected from the superposition of initial nucleon-nucleon collisions, contrary
to the J/psi enhancement predicted by the kinetic formation model. The
production of J/psi is further suppressed if one includes the color screening
effect in the parton phase. We have also studied the dependence of J/psi
production on the charm quark mass and the effective charm meson mass.Comment: Figures redone with better statistic
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
