Completeness Results for Parameterized Space Classes
The parameterized complexity of a problem is considered "settled" once it has
been shown to lie in FPT or to be complete for a class in the W-hierarchy or a
similar parameterized hierarchy. Several natural parameterized problems have,
however, resisted such a classification. At least in some cases, the reason is
that upper and lower bounds for their parameterized space complexity have
recently been obtained that rule out completeness results for parameterized
time classes. In this paper, we make progress in this direction by proving that
the associative generability problem and the longest common subsequence problem
are complete for parameterized space classes. These classes are defined in
terms of different forms of bounded nondeterminism and in terms of simultaneous
time--space bounds. As a technical tool we introduce a "union operation" that
translates between problems complete for classical complexity classes and for

Influence of statistical fluctuations on ratios in relativistic heavy ion collisions
The influence of pure statistical fluctuations on ratio is
investigated in an event-by-event way. Poisson and the modified negative
binomial distributions are used as the multiplicity distributions since they
both have statistical background. It is shown that the distributions of the
ratio in these cases are Gaussian, and the mean and relative variance are given

Entanglement measurement based on two-particle interference
We propose a simple and realizable method using a two-particle interferometer
for the experimental measurement of pairwise entanglement, assuming some prior
knowledge about the quantum state. The basic idea is that the properties of the
density matrix can be revealed by the single- and two-particle interference
patterns. The scheme can easily be implemented with polarized entangled

A universal primer for isolation of fragments of a gene encoding phytoene desaturase for use in virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) studies
We have been using Virus-Induced Gene Silencing (VIGS) to test the function of genes that are candidates for involvement in floral senescence. Although VIGS is a powerful tool for assaying the effects of gene silencing in plants, relatively few taxa have been studied using this approach, and most that have are in the Solanaceae. We typically use silencing of phytoene desaturase (PDS) in preliminary tests of the feasibility of using VIGS. Silencing this gene, whose product is involved in carotene biosynthesis, results in a characteristic photobleaching phenotype in the leaves. We have found that efficient silencing requires the use of fragments that are more than 90% homologous to the target gene. To simplify testing the effectiveness of VIGS in a range of species, we designed a set of universal primers to a region of the PDS gene that is highly conserved among species, and that therefore allows an investigator to isolate a fragment of the homologous PDS gene from the species of interest. We report the sequences of these primers and the results of VIGS experiments in horticultural species from the Asteraceae, Leguminosae, Balsaminaceae and Solanaceae
Possibility of cyclic Turnarounds In Brane-world Scenario: Phantom Energy Accretion onto Black Holes and its consequences
A universe described by braneworlds is studied in a cyclic scenario. As
expected such an oscillating universe will undergo turnarounds, whenever the
phantom energy density reaches a critical value from either side. It is found
that a universe described by RSII brane model will readily undergo oscillations
if, either the brane tension, \lambda, or the bulk cosmological constant,
\Lambda_{4}, is negative. The DGP brane model does not readily undergo cyclic
turnarounds. Hence for this model a modified equation is proposed to
incorporate the cyclic nature. It is found that there is always a remanent mass
of a black hole at the verge of a turnaround. Hence contrary to known results
in literature, it is found that the destruction of black holes at the
turnaround is completely out of question. Finally to alleviate, if not solve,
the problem posed by the black holes, it is argued that the remanent masses of
the black holes do not act as a serious defect of the model because of Hawking

The Cardy-Verlinde formula and entropy of Topological Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes in de Sitter spaces
In this paper we discuss the question of whether the entropy of cosmological
horizon in Topological Reissner-Nordstr\"om- de Sitter spaces can be described
by the Cardy-Verlinde formula, which is supposed to be an entropy formula of
conformal field theory in any dimension. Furthermore, we find that the entropy
of black hole horizon can also be rewritten in terms of the Cardy-Verlinde
formula for these black holes in de Sitter spaces, if we use the definition due
to Abbott and Deser for conserved charges in asymptotically de Sitter spaces.

Interaction of a Nanomagnet with a Weak Superconducting Link
We study electromagnetic interaction of a nanomagnet with a weak
superconducting link. Equations that govern coupled dynamics of the two systems
are derived and investigated numerically. We show that the presence of a small
magnet in the proximity of a weak link may be detected through Shapiro-like
steps caused by the precession of the magnetic moment. Despite very weak
magnetic field generated by the weak link, a time-dependent bias voltage
applied to the link can initiate a non-linear dynamics of the nanomagnet that
leads to the reversal of its magnetic moment. We also consider quantum problem
in which a nanomagnet interacting with a weak link is treated as a two-state
spin system due to quantum tunneling between spin-up and spin-down states.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
