    Ultrafast dephasing of coherent optical phonons in atomically controlled GeTe/Sb2_{2}Te3_{3} superlattices

    Femtosecond dynamics of coherent optical phonons in GeTe/Sb2_{2}Te3_{3} superlattices (SLs), a new class of semiconductor SLs with three different states, have been investigated by using a reflection-type pump-probe technique at various lattice temperatures. The time-resolved transient reflectivity (TR) obtained in as-grown SLs exhibits the coherent A1_{1} optical modes at 5.10 THz and 3.78 THz, while only the single A1_{1} mode at 3.68 THz is observed in annealed SLs. The decay rate of the A1_{1} mode in annealed SLs is strongly temperature dependent, while that in as-grown SLs is not temperature dependent. This result indicates that the damping of the coherent A1_{1} phonons in amorphous SLs is governed by the phonon-defect (vacancy) scattering rather than the anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Efficient network-guided multi-locus association mapping with graph cuts

    As an increasing number of genome-wide association studies reveal the limitations of attempting to explain phenotypic heritability by single genetic loci, there is growing interest for associating complex phenotypes with sets of genetic loci. While several methods for multi-locus mapping have been proposed, it is often unclear how to relate the detected loci to the growing knowledge about gene pathways and networks. The few methods that take biological pathways or networks into account are either restricted to investigating a limited number of predetermined sets of loci, or do not scale to genome-wide settings. We present SConES, a new efficient method to discover sets of genetic loci that are maximally associated with a phenotype, while being connected in an underlying network. Our approach is based on a minimum cut reformulation of the problem of selecting features under sparsity and connectivity constraints that can be solved exactly and rapidly. SConES outperforms state-of-the-art competitors in terms of runtime, scales to hundreds of thousands of genetic loci, and exhibits higher power in detecting causal SNPs in simulation studies than existing methods. On flowering time phenotypes and genotypes from Arabidopsis thaliana, SConES detects loci that enable accurate phenotype prediction and that are supported by the literature.     CLONAL CHARACTER OF F1 HYBRID LYMPHOCYTE SUBSET RECOGNITION OF PARENTAL CELLS IN ONE-WAY MIXED LYMPHOCYTE CULTURES

    Proliferation of F1 hybrid lymphocytes in mixed lymphocyte cultures is stimulated by mitomycin-blocked parental cells. The demonstration of this phenomenon using F1 hybrids derived from congenic lines of mice establishes that the stimulation is controlled by genes in or closely linked to the major histocompatibility locus chromosome region. In agreement with the finding that tumor-bearing mice have an increased capacity for primary alloantigen recognition, it was observed that the F1 hybrid response to parent was also augmented by tumor bearing. Chromosomal analysis of dividing cells in one-way mixed cultures confirms that F1 cells, and not the blocked parental cells, enter mitosis. Stimulation of F1 cells by a soluble mediator liberated by the parental cells was not observed and mitomycin blocking of parental cells seems to be a completely effective blocking agent ensuring that parental cells can not enter DNA synthesis. The specificity and clonal nature of F1 recognition of parent was demonstrated using a 5-bromodeoxyuridine-suicide procedure. Distinct clones of lymphocytes in F1 spleen cell populations seem to recognize one or the other parent, but not both, in such experiments. These observations and others in tumor systems suggest that most or all heterozygous organisms may possess potentially self-reactive clones of lymphocytes

    Importance of Starting Age for Myelotoxicity Study in Dietary Restricted Rats

    The aim of this study was to prove our hypothesis that adult rats with lowering of body weight gain, rats at 12 weeks of age as an example, are suitable for evaluation of myelotoxicity. Age-related differences between young rats (6-week-old study) and adult rats (12-week-old study) were analyzed in hematological examination values. The data of the young rats were reprinted from our previous report (Miyata et al., 2009) since our hypothesis was verified by comparison with that previous report. Several experimental groups were defined for the 12-week-old study as well as for the 6-week-old study; these included 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) treated groups receiving 12, 15 and 18 mg/kg/day (FU12, FU15 and FU18), pair-feeding groups (R12, R15 and R18 receiving the same amount of food as in the FU12, FU15 and FU18 groups, respectively) and a nontreated control group. Numerous hematologic and bone marrow parameters in the 5-FU treated groups were comparable to those in the corresponding pair-feeding groups in both age studies. Generally, the influences of undernutrition were more apparent in the young rats than in the adult rats. Histopathological examinations showed a decrease in hematopoiesis in the bone marrow in the 5-FU treated and pair-feeding groups. No apparent differences were observed in the decreased hematopoiesis between the 5-FU treated and pair-feeding groups in the 6-week-old study, but a difference between these groups was noted in the 12-week-old study; decreased hematopoiesis was more frequently noted in the 5-FU treated groups. These facts suggest that adult rats are more suitable than young rats for evaluation of 5-FU-induced myelotoxicity

    Evaluation of Short-term Myelotoxicity Study in Dietary Reduced Rats

    This study attempted to prove our hypothesis that a short-term toxicity study, using a 4-day dosing regimen as an example, is suitable for evaluating myelotoxicity in rats. We compared the hematological, bone marrow cytological and histopathological results of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) treated and pair-feeding groups after a 4-day administration period. Several experimental groups were defined for this 4-day study as well as for our previously reported 14-day study (Miyata et al., 2009); these included 5-FU treated groups receiving 12, 15 and 18 mg/kg/day (FU12, FU15 and FU18), pair-feeding groups (R12, R15 and R18 receiving the same amount of food as the FU12, FU15 and FU18 groups, respectively) and a nontreated control group. Although severe reductions in body weight gain and food consumption were reported in the 14-day study, only slight reductions were observed in the 4-day study. In the 4-day study, a decrease in blood reticulocytes and a decreasing trend of marrow erythroid cells were only observed in the FU18 group, and no effects were observed in the pair-feeding groups. The erythroblastic changes observed in this 4-day study were thought to reflect the direct influence of 5-FU administration. Since concerns regarding the influence of secondary changes related to undernutrition were minimized in the 4-day study, it was thought to clarify the direct influence of 5-FU administration on erythroblastic cells. Thus, a 4-day study protocol might be helpful for distinguishing secondary changes related to undernutrition

    Fast algorithm for calculating two-photon absorption spectra

    We report a numerical calculation of the two-photon absorption coefficient of electrons in a binding potential using the real-time real-space higher-order difference method. By introducing random vector averaging for the intermediate state, the task of evaluating the two-dimensional time integral is reduced to calculating two one-dimensional integrals. This allows the reduction of the computation load down to the same order as that for the linear response function. The relative advantage of the method compared to the straightforward multi-dimensional time integration is greater for the calculation of non-linear response functions of higher order at higher energy resolution.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     By means of ab initio molecular dynamics and band structure calculations, as well as using calculated STM images, we have singled out one structural model for the (3x2) reconstruction of the Si-terminated (001) surface of cubic SiC, amongst several proposed in the literature. This is an alternate dimer-row model, with an excess Si coverage of 1/3, yielding STM images in good accord with recent measurements [F.Semond et al. Phys. Rev.     Timing of sedimentation, metamorphism, and plutonism in the Helgeland Nappe Complex, north-central Norwegian Caledonides

    The Helgeland Nappe Complex consists of a sequence of imbricated east-dipping nappes that record a history of Neoproterozoic- Ordovician, sedimentary, metamorphic, and magmatic events. A combination of U-Pb dating of zircon and titanite by laser-ablation- inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry plus chemostratigraphic data on marbles places tight constraints on the sedimentary, tectonic, and thermal events of the complex. Strontium and carbon isotope data have identifi ed Neoproterozoic marbles in the Lower Nappe, the Horta nappe, and Scandian-aged infolds in the Vikna region. The environment of deposition of these rocks was a continental shelf, presumably of Laurentia. Detrital zircon ages from the Lower Nappe are nearly identical to those of Dalradian sedimentary rocks in Scotland. Cambrian rifting caused development of one or more ophiolitefl oored basins, into which thick sequences of Early Ordovician clastic and carbonate sediments were deposited. On the basis of ages of the youngest zircons, deposition ended after ca. 481 Ma. These basin units are now seen as the Skei Group, Sauren-Torghatten Nappe, and Middle Nappe, as well as the stratigraphically highest part of the Horta nappe and possibly of the Upper Nappe. The provenance of these sediments was partly from the Lower Nappe, on the basis of detrital zircon age populations in metasandstones and cobbles from proximal conglomerates. However, the source of Cambrian-Ordovician zircons in all of the Early Ordovician basins is enigmatic. Crustal anatexis of the Lower and Upper Nappes occurred ca. 480 Ma, followed by imbrication of the entire nappe sequence. By ca. 478 Ma, the Horta nappe was overturned and was at the structural base of the nappe sequence, where it underwent migmatization and was the source of S-type magmas. Diverse magmatic activity followed ca. 465 Ma, 450-445 Ma, and 439-424 Ma. Several plutons in the youngest age range contain inherited 460-450 Ma zircons. These zircons are interpreted to refl ect a deep crustal zone in which mafi c magmas caused melting, mixing, and hybridization from 460 to 450 Ma. Magmatic reheating of this zone, possibly associated with crustal thickening, resulted in voluminous, predominantly tonalitic magmatism from 439 to 424 Ma

    The Lattice Λ\Lambda Parameter in Domain Wall QCD

    We evaluate the ratio of the scale parameter Λ\Lambda in domain wall QCD to the one in the continuum theory at one loop level incorporating the effect of massless quarks. We show that the Pauli-Villars regulator is required to subtract the unphysical massive fermion modes which emerge in the fermion loop contributions to the gluon self energy.
