Single-Shot Visualization Of Evolving Laser- Or Beam-Driven Plasma Wakefield Accelerators
We introduce Frequency-Domain Tomography (FDT) for visualizing sub-ps evolution of light-speed refractive index structures in a single shot. As a prototype demonstration, we produce single-shot tomographic movies of self-focusing, filamenting laser pulses propagating in a transparent Kerr medium. We then discuss how to adapt FDT to visualize evolving laser-or beam-driven plasma wakefields of current interest to the advanced accelerator community. For short (L similar to 1 cm), dense (n(e) similar to 10(19) cm(-3)) plasmas, the key challenge is broadening probe bandwidth sufficiently to resolve plasma-wavelength-size structures. For long (L similar to 10 to 100 cm), tenuous (n(e) similar to 10(17) cm(-3)) plasmas, probe diffraction from the evolving wake becomes the key challenge. Complications of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in dogs and cats receiving corticosteroid treatment
BACKGROUND: Corticosteroid treatment is commonly required in veterinary patients for treatment of inflammatory, immuneâmediated, neurologic, and neoplastic diseases, which also may require assisted enteral nutrition via percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate complications associated with PEG use in dogs and cats receiving corticosteroid treatment. ANIMALS: Fortyâtwo animals were included in the study: 12 dogs and 2 cats in the steroid group and 26 dogs and 2 cats in the control group. METHODS: Medical records, between January 2006 and March 2015, were reviewed. Patients were included if the PEG tube was in use for at least 24 hours and if complete medical records were available. Patients were assigned to the control group if they were not treated with corticosteroids during PEG use or to the steroid group if they had received corticosteroids during PEG tube use. Complications were classified as minor, moderate, and major in severity. Maximum severity complication rate was compared between groups. RESULTS: The general prevalence of complications was found to be similar between groups (P = .306), but in the steroid group, 43% of the cases developed a major severity complication compared with 18% of the control group (P = .054). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Owners of dogs and cats receiving corticosteroids, in which PEG is planned, should be counseled about possible complications beyond those associated with PEG tube usage alone
Unitary Fermi Gas in a Harmonic Trap
We present an {\it ab initio} calculation of small numbers of trapped,
strongly interacting fermions using the Green's Function Monte Carlo method
(GFMC). The ground state energy, density profile and pairing gap are calculated
for particle numbers using the parameter-free "unitary"
interaction. Trial wave functions are taken of the form of correlated pairs in
a harmonic oscillator basis. We find that the lowest energies are obtained with
a minimum explicit pair correlation beyond that needed to exploit the
degeneracy of oscillator states. We find that energies can be well fitted by
the expression where is the
Thomas-Fermi energy of a noninteracting gas in the trap and is a
pairing gap. There is no evidence of a shell correction energy in the
systematics, but the density distributions show pronounced shell effects. We
find the value for the pairing gap. This is smaller
than the value found for the uniform gas at a density corresponding to the
central density of the trapped gas.Comment: 2 figures, 2 table
Combustion: Structural interaction in a viscoelastic material
The effect of interaction between combustion processes and structural deformation of solid propellant was considered. The combustion analysis was performed on the basis of deformed crack geometry, which was determined from the structural analysis. On the other hand, input data for the structural analysis, such as pressure distribution along the crack boundary and ablation velocity of the crack, were determined from the combustion analysis. The interaction analysis was conducted by combining two computer codes, a combustion analysis code and a general purpose finite element structural analysis code
Quantum Thetas on Noncommutative T^4 from Embeddings into Lattice
In this paper we investigate the theta vector and quantum theta function over
noncommutative T^4 from the embedding of R x Z^2. Manin has constructed the
quantum theta functions from the lattice embedding into vector space (x finite
group). We extend Manin's construction of the quantum theta function to the
embedding of vector space x lattice case. We find that the holomorphic theta
vector exists only over the vector space part of the embedding, and over the
lattice part we can only impose the condition for Schwartz function. The
quantum theta function built on this partial theta vector satisfies the
requirement of the quantum theta function. However, two subsequent quantum
translations from the embedding into the lattice part are non-additive,
contrary to the additivity of those from the vector space part.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX, version to appear in J. Phys.
Pickoff and spin-conversion quenchings of ortho-positronium in oxygen
The quenching processes of the thermalized ortho-positronium(o-Ps) on an
oxygen molecule have been studied by the positron annihilation age-momentum
correlation techinique(AMOC). The Doppler broadening spectrum of the 511 keV
gamma-rays from the 2gamma annihilation of o-Ps in O_2 has been measured as a
function of the o-Ps age. The rate of the quenching, consisting of the pickoff
and the spin-conversion, is estimated from the positron lifetime spectrum. The
ratio of the pickoff quenching rate to the spin-conversion rate is deduced from
the Doppler broadening of the 511 keV gamma-rays from the annihilation of the
o-Ps. The pickoff parameter ^1Z_eff, the effective number of the electrons per
molecule which contribute to the pickoff quenching, for O_2 is determined to be
0.6 +- 0.4. The cross-section for the elastic spin-conversion quenching is
