Immunity in barren and enriched housed pigs differing in baseline cortisol concentration
It was shown recently that barren housed pigs (small pens, no substrate) have a blunted circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol as compared to enriched housed pigs (large pens with daily fresh bedding). In the light period, enriched housed pigs showed significantly higher concentrations of cortisol in saliva than barren housed pigs, whereas in the dark period, cortisol concentrations were low in both enriched and barren housed pigs. In the present study, the immunological consequences of the difference in baseline salivary cortisol concentration in the light period were evaluated. It appeared that leukocyte and lymphocyte distributions, and in vitro lymphocyte proliferation following ConcanavalineA (ConA) stimulation in the assay using purified lymphocytes were not affected. However, barren and enriched housed pigs did show a different proliferation response to ConA in the whole blood assay. At day 2 of culture, proliferation was higher in barren housed pigs than in enriched housed pigs, whereas at day 4 of culture, proliferation was higher in enriched housed pigs than in barren housed pigs. Lymphocyte proliferation at day 2 of culture in the whole blood assay correlated negatively with plasma cortisol levels, which might thus explain the higher proliferation in barren housed pigs at day 2 of culture. The in vivo humoral and cellular (delayed type hypersensitivity, DTH) immune response to KLH was not affected by housing conditions. We conclude that, although baseline salivary cortisol concentrations differ between enriched and barren housed pigs, immune function appears to be relatively unaffected.
Photodissociative Regulation of Star Formation in Metal-Free Pregalactic Clouds
We study the H2 photodissociation regions around OB stars in primordial gas
clouds whose virial temperatures are between a few hundred and a few thousand
Kelvin. In such small objects, a single O star can photodissociate a mass equal
to that of the cloud itself. As a result, the clouds deplete their molecular
coolant and cannot cool in a free-fall time, and subsequent star formation is
totally quenched. This indicates that stars do not form efficiently in small
objects and that these objects contribute little to the reionization of the

The evolution of the stellar populations in low surface brightness galaxies
We investigate the star formation history and chemical evolution of low
surface brightness (LSB) disk galaxies by modelling their observed
spectro-photometric and chemical properties using a galactic chemical and
photometric evolution model incorporating a detailed metallicity depen dent set
of stellar input data. For a large fraction of the LSB galaxies in our sample,
observed properties are best explained by models incorporating an exponentially
decreasing global star formation rate (SFR) ending at a present-day gas
fraction (M_{gas}/(M_{gas}+M_{stars}) = 0.5 for a galaxy age of 14 Gyr. For
some galaxies small amplitude star formation bursts are required to explain the
contribution of the young (5-50 Myr old) stellar population to the galaxy
integrated luminosity. This suggests that star formation has proceeded in a
stochastic manner.
The presence of an old stellar population in many late-type LSB galaxies
suggests that LSB galaxies roughly follow the same evolutionary history as HSB
galaxies, except at a much lower rate. In particular, our results imply that
LSB galaxies do not form late, nor have a delayed onset of star formation, but

Self-Regulation of Star Formation in Low Metallicity Clouds
We investigate the process of self-regulated star formation via
photodissociation of hydrogen molecules in low metallicity clouds. We evaluate
the influence region's scale of a massive star in low metallicity gas clouds
whose temperatures are between 100 and 10000 Kelvin. A single O star can
photodissociate hydrogen molecules in the whole of the host cloud. If
metallicity is smaller than about 10^{-2.5} of the solar metallicity, the
depletion of coolant of the the host cloud is very serious so that the cloud
cannot cool in a free-fall time, and subsequent star formation is almost
quenched. On the contrary, if metallicity is larger than about 10^{-1.5} of the
solar metallicity, star formation regulation via photodissociation is not
efficient. The typical metallicity when this transition occurs is about 1/100
of the solar metallicity. This indicates that stars do not form efficiently
before the metallicity becomes larger than about 1/100 of the solar metallicity
and we considered that this value becomes the lower limit of the metallicity of

Effects of High-Level Acylsugar-Producing Tomato Lines on the Development of Tomato Psyllids (Hemiptera: Triozidae).
Acylsugars have been shown to provide activity against numerous insect pests of tomatoes. Comparison of acylsugar levels in four tomato plant lines, FA7/AS, FA2/AS, CU071026, and 'Yellow Pear', found that the acylsugar contents in the elevated acylsugar lines were significantly higher than the commercial Yellow Pear (control) tomato plant line. Adult choice tests indicated that the tomato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli, preferred to settle on the Yellow Pear and FA2/AS lines over the line with the highest content of acylsugars, FA7/AS, and the parental line, CU071026. The no-choice test demonstrated that adults laid fewer eggs on the high acylsugar tomato lines than on the control tomato line, Yellow Pear. For all high acylsugar lines, the relative growth index of the psyllid was significantly lower compared with the commercial line, indicating a reduced potential for population growth. Although some tomato psyllids completed their life cycle on the high acylsugar tomato plant lines, the percent survival of psyllids to the adult stage when developing on the high acylsugar lines was significantly less (range = 43.7-57.1%) than on the commercial tomato line (83.8%). All mortality occurred during the early stages of development (egg stage to third instar), which has implications for acquisition and transmission of Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum, the causal agent of tomato vein greening disease. Therefore, with reduced attractiveness for tomato psyllids and significantly reduced survival, the high-acylsugar tomato plant lines have the potential to be part of an integrated pest management program for this pest
The "quasi-stable" lipid shelled microbubble in response to consecutive ultrasound pulses
Controlled microbubble stability upon exposure to consecutive ultrasound exposures is important for increased sensitivity in contrast enhanced ultrasound diagnostics and manipulation for localised drug release. An ultra high-speed camera operating at 13 × 10 6 frames per second is used to show that a physical instability in the encapsulating lipid shell can be promoted by ultrasound, causing loss of shell material that depends on the characteristics of the microbubble motion. This leads to well characterized disruption, and microbubbles follow an irreversible trajectory through the resonance peak, causing the evolution of specific microbubble spectral signatures. © 2012 American Institute of Physics
Noise suppression due to long-range Coulomb interaction: Crossover between diffusive and ballistic transport regimes
We present a Monte Carlo analysis of shot-noise suppression due to long-range
Coulomb interaction in semiconductor samples under a crossover between
diffusive and ballistic transport regimes. By varying the mean time between
collisions we find that the strong suppression observed under the ballistic
regime persists under quasi-ballistic conditions, before being washed out when

Morphological Evolution of Distant Galaxies from Adaptive Optics Imaging
We report here on a sample of resolved, infrared images of galaxies at z~0.5
taken with the 10-m Keck Telescope's Adaptive Optics (AO) system. We regularly
achieve a spatial resolution of 0.05'' and are thus able to resolve both the
disk and bulge components. We have extracted morphological information for ten
galaxies and compared their properties to those of a local sample. The
selection effects of both samples were explicitly taken into account in order
to derive the unbiased result that disks at z~0.5 are ~0.6 mag arcsec^-2
brighter than, and about the same size as, local disks. The
no-luminosity-evolution case is ruled out at 90% confidence. We also find, in a
more qualitative analysis, that the bulges of these galaxies have undergone a
smaller amount of surface brightness evolution and have also not changed
significantly in size from z~0.5 to today. This is the first time this type of
morphological evolution has been measured in the infrared and it points to the

The cholesterol-raising diterpenes from coffee beans increase serum lipid transfer protein activity levels in humans
Cafestol and kahweol–diterpenes present in unfiltered coffee— strongly raise serum VLDL and LDL cholesterol and slightly reduce HDL cholesterol in humans. The mechanism of action is unknown. We determined whether the coffee diterpenes may affect lipoprotein metabolism via effects on lipid transfer proteins and lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase in a randomized, double-blind cross-over study with 10 healthy male volunteers. Either cafestol (61–64 mg/day) or a mixture of cafestol (60 mg/day) and kahweol (48–54 mg/day) was given for 28 days. Serum activity levels of cholesterylester transfer protein, phospholipid transfer protein and lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase were measured using exogenous substrate assays. Relative to baseline values, cafestol raised the mean (±S.D.) activity of cholesterylester transfer protein by 18±12% and of phospholipid transfer protein by 21±14% (both P<0.001). Relative to cafestol alone, kahweol had no significant additional effects. Lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase activity was reduced by 11±12% by cafestol plus kahweol (P=0.02). It is concluded that the effects of coffee diterpenes on plasma lipoproteins may be connected with changes in serum activity levels of lipid transfer proteins
