Fabrication and transport critical currents of multifilamentary MgB2/Fe wires and tapes

Multifilamentary MgB2/Fe wires and tapes with high transport critical current densities have been fabricated using a straightforward powder-in-tube (PIT) process. After annealing, we measured transport jc values up to 1.1 * 105 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and in a field of 2 T in a MgB2/Fe square wire with 7 filaments fabricated by two-axial rolling, and up to 5 * 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K in 1 T in a MgB2/Fe tape with 7 filaments. For higher currents these multifilamentary wires and tapes quenched due to insufficient thermal stability of filaments. Both the processing routes and deformation methods were found to be important factors for fabricating multifilamentary MgB2 wires and tapes with high transport jc values.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of oscillatory shape evolution for electromigration-driven islands

The shape evolution of two-dimensional islands under electromigration-driven periphery diffusion is studied by kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations and continuum theory. The energetics of the KMC model is adapted to the Cu(100) surface, and the continuum model is matched to the KMC model by a suitably parametrized choice of the orientation-dependent step stiffness and step atom mobility. At 700 K shape oscillations predicted by continuum theory are quantitatively verified by the KMC simulations, while at 500 K qualitative differences between the two modeling approaches are found.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

MgB2 conductors for dc and ac applications

The paper presents discussion on up to date results on MgB2 conductors from the point of view of their future dc and ac applications. Basic physical parameters of MgB2 compound relevant to conductors are introduced. Different conductor preparation methods and conductor architectures are presented and attainable critical current densities discussed. Some numerical results on critical currents and ac losses of future multifilamentary MgB2 conductors with magnetic cladding of their filaments are given. Recently observed anomalous decrease of ac susceptibility at 50 K in copper clad Powder-in-tube, PIT, MgB2 wires is presented.Comment: Paper presented at EUCAS'01 conference, Copenhagen, 26-30 August 200

The U(1)A anomaly in noncommutative SU(N) theories

We work out the one-loop U(1)AU(1)_A anomaly for noncommutative SU(N) gauge theories up to second order in the noncommutative parameter θμν\theta^{\mu\nu}. We set θ0i=0\theta^{0i}=0 and conclude that there is no breaking of the classical U(1)AU(1)_A symmetry of the theory coming from the contributions that are either linear or quadratic in θμν\theta^{\mu\nu}. Of course, the ordinary anomalous contributions will be still with us. We also show that the one-loop conservation of the nonsinglet currents holds at least up to second order in θμν\theta^{\mu\nu}. We adapt our results to noncommutative gauge theories with SO(N) and U(1) gauge groups.Comment: 50 pages, 5 figures in eps files. Some comments and references adde

The formation of immigration law in Italy: between policy, parties, press and public opinion in 2007

    Get PDF
The current center-left government of Italy, under Romano Prodi, has adopted a long-term, integrationalist approach on immigration into Italy. Most apparent in the proposed citizenship bill of August 2006 and the Amato-Ferrero immigration bill of April 2007, the Prodi government has broken ties with the philosophy of the previous center-right government, epitomized in the Bossi-Fini law. Despite these intentions, however, the situation remains volatile, with the future of these legislative measures still undetermined, alongside many other institutional and social questions. Press reports and public opinion surveys highlight the emergent social complexities, recounting racist and revengeful attacks taking place against immigrant communities and increasing sentiments of insecurity, amongst demands for more integration of immigrants. Immigration is a reality in modern Italy, yet uncertainty characterizes both the pending legislation and the community responses, as the Italian government, under Prodi, finally attempts to acknowledge Italy’s transition into a modern immigration country
