    Scattering properties of a cut-circle billiard waveguide with two conical leads

    We examine a two-dimensional electron waveguide with a cut-circle cavity and conical leads. By considering Wigner delay times and the Landauer-B\"{u}ttiker conductance for this system, we probe the effects of the closed billiard energy spectrum on scattering properties in the limit of weakly coupled leads.     In late summer in Europe, pollen of mugwort is one of the major sources of atopic allergens. No information about the complete molecular structure of any mugwort allergen has been published so far. Here we report the isolation and characterization of mugwort pollen cDNA clones coding for two isoforms of the panallergen profilin. Thirtysix percent of the mugwort allergic patients tested displayed IgE antibodies against natural and recombinant profilin, and no significant differences were observed in the IgEbinding properties of the isoforms. One profilin isoform was purified to homogeneity and detailed structural analysis indicated that the protein exists in solution as dimers and tetramers stabilized by sulfydryl and/or ionic interactions. Profilin monomers were detectable only after exposure of multimers to harsh denaturing conditions. Dimers and tetramers did not significantly differ in their ability to bind serum IgE from mugwort pollenallergic patients. However, oligomeric forms might have a higher allergenic potential than monomers because larger molecules would have additional epitopes for IgEmediated histamine release. Profilin isolated from mugwort pollen also formed multimers. Thus, oligomerization is not an artifact resulting from the recombinant production of the allergen. Inhibition experiments showed extensive IgE crossreactivity of recombinant mugwort profilin and profilin from various pollen and food extracts

    Clean and Green Urban Water Bodies Benefit Nocturnal Flying Insects and Their Predators, Insectivorous Bats

    Nocturnal arthropods form the prey base for many predators and are an integral part of complex food webs. However, there is limited understanding of the mechanisms influencing invertebrates at urban water bodies and the potential flow-on effects to their predators. This study aims to: (i) understand the importance of standing water bodies for nocturnal flying insect orders, including the landscape- and local-scale factors driving these patterns; and (ii) quantify the relationship between insects and insectivorous bats. We investigated nocturnal flying insects and insectivorous bats simultaneously at water bodies (n = 58) and non-water body sites (n = 35) using light traps and acoustic recorders in Melbourne, Australia. At the landscape scale, we found that the presence of water and high levels of surrounding greenness were important predictors for some insect orders. At the water body scale, low levels of sediment pollutants, increased riparian tree cover and water body size supported higher insect order richness and a greater abundance of Coleopterans and Trichopterans, respectively. Most bat species had a positive response to a high abundance of Lepidopterans, confirming the importance of this order in the diet of insectivorous bats.     High-performance triazole-containing brush polymers via azide-alkyne click chemistry: a new functional polymer platform for electrical memory devices

    Two series of well-defined brush polymers bearing a triazole moiety on each bristle were prepared from the click chemistry reactions of a poly(glycidyl azide) (PG) and a poly(4-azidomethylstyrene) (PS) with alkyne derivatives. The thin-film morphologies and properties, especially electrical memory performances, of these triazole-containing brush polymers were investigated in detail. The brush polymers with a triazole ring substituted with an alkyl or alkylenylphenyl group in the bristle exhibited only dielectric characteristics. By contrast, the other brush polymers bearing a triazole ring substituted with phenyl or its derivatives with a longer pi-conjugation length in the bristle demonstrated excellent unipolar permanent memory behaviors with low power consumption, high ON/OFF current ratios and high stability and reliability under ambient air conditions. Furthermore, their memory type could be tuned to p- or n-type by the incorporation of an electron-donating or -accepting group into the phenyl unit linked to the triazole moiety. Overall, this study presents the first demonstration of the azide-alkyne click chemistry synthesis of triazole moieties with substituent(s) that exhibit a resonance effect; this approach is a very powerful synthetic route to develop electrical memory polymers suitable for the low-cost mass production of high-performance, polarity-free programmable memory devices.111711Ysciescopu

    Structural characterization of the Fddd phase in a diblock copolymer thin film by electron microtomography

    A 3-dimensional Fddd network structure of a polystyrene-block-polyisoprene (PS-b-PI) diblock copolymer (M(n) = 31 500, f(PI) = 0.645) was observed for the first time in real space by transmission electron microtomography (TEMT). In a 650 nm thick film of the PS-b-PI thin film on a silicon wafer, the Fddd phase was developed after annealing at 215 degrees C for 24 h. The single network structure consists of the connected tripodal units of minor PS block domains. The {111}(Fddd) plane, the densest plane of the minor PS phase, was found to orient parallel to the film plane. The transitional structure from the wetting layer at the free surface to the internal {111}(Fddd) plane via a perforated layer structure was also observed.X111313sciescopu
