Towards the Modeling of Neuronal Firing by Gaussian Processes
This paper focuses on the outline of some computational methods for the
approximate solution of the integral equations for the neuronal firing
probability density and an algorithm for the generation of sample-paths in
order to construct histograms estimating the firing densities. Our results
originate from the study of non-Markov stationary Gaussian neuronal models with
the aim to determine the neuron's firing probability density function. A
parallel algorithm has been implemented in order to simulate large numbers of
sample paths of Gaussian processes characterized by damped oscillatory
covariances in the presence of time dependent boundaries. The analysis based on
the simulation procedure provides an alternative research tool when closed-form
results or analytic evaluation of the neuronal firing densities are not
available.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Scientiae Mathematicae

Optical Force/Tactile Sensors for Robotic Applications
Nowadays, robotic systems use tactile sensing as a key enabling technology to implement complex tasks. For example, manipulation and grasping problems strongly depend on the physical and geometrical characteristics of the objects; in fact, objects may be deformable or change their shape when in contact with the robot or the environment. For this reason, often, robots end effectors are equipped with sensorized fingers which can estimate the objects' features, forces, and contact locations. This is useful in a safe and efficient physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI) to perform cooperation and co-manipulation tasks while limiting damage from accidental impacts
On Myosin II dynamics in the presence of external loads
We address the controversial hot question concerning the validity of the
loose coupling versus the lever-arm theories in the actomyosin dynamics by
re-interpreting and extending the phenomenological washboard potential model
proposed by some of us in a previous paper. In this new model a Brownian motion
harnessing thermal energy is assumed to co-exist with the deterministic swing
of the lever-arm, to yield an excellent fit of the set of data obtained by some
of us on the sliding of Myosin II heads on immobilized actin filaments under
various load conditions. Our theoretical arguments are complemented by accurate
numerical simulations, and the robustness of the model is tested via different
choices of parameters and potential profiles.Comment: 6 figures, 8 tables, to appear on Biosystem
The brain: What is critical about it?
We review the recent proposal that the most fascinating brain properties are
related to the fact that it always stays close to a second order phase
transition. In such conditions, the collective of neuronal groups can reliably
generate robust and flexible behavior, because it is known that at the critical
point there is the largest abundance of metastable states to choose from. Here
we review the motivation, arguments and recent results, as well as further
implications of this view of the functioning brain.Comment: Proceedings of BIOCOMP2007 - Collective Dynamics: Topics on

Immediate Memory and Electrophysiologic Effects of Prefrontal Cortex Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Neurotypical Individuals and Individuals with Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury: A Pilot Study.
PURPOSE/AIM: Memory impairment post-TBI is common, frequently persistent, and functionally debilitating. The purposes of this pilot study were to assess and to compare immediate behavioral auditory working memory and electrophysiologic effects of three different, randomized, conditions of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (LDLPFC) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to four neurotypical adults and four adults with chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI). MATERIALS/METHODS: Pre- and post- anodal, cathodal, and sham tDCS auditory memory performance, auditory event-related potentials (P300 amplitude and latency) and power of alpha and theta EEG bands were measured across individuals in each group. RESULTS: Post-anodal tDCS only, the neurotypical and TBI groups both demonstrated significantly improved immediate auditory memory function. Also post-anodal tDCS, the TBI group demonstrated significantly increased P300 amplitude versus post-sham tDCS. The neurotypical group demonstrated no pre- post tDCS electrophysiologic changes across conditions. CONCLUSIONS: These findings are consistent with findings of other studies of immediate tDCS effects on other types of memory in neurotypical individuals and in individuals with Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and stroke and suggest that individuals with memory impairments second to chronic TBI may benefit from LDLPFC anodal tDCS. Pairing tDCS with traditional behavioral memory interventions may facilitate TBI rehabilitation outcomes and warrants continued investigation

Tactile sensors for parallel grippers: Design and characterization
Tactile data perception is of paramount importance in today’s robotics applications. This paper describes the latest design of the tactile sensor developed in our laboratory. Both the hardware and firmware concepts are reported in detail in order to allow the research community the sensor reproduction, also according to their needs. The sensor is based on optoelectronic technology and the pad shape can be adapted to various robotics applications. A flat surface, as the one proposed in this paper, can be well exploited if the object sizes are smaller than the pad and/or the shape recognition is needed, while a domed pad can be used to manipulate bigger objects. Compared to the previous version, the novel tactile sensor has a larger sensing area and a more robust electronic, mechanical and software design that yields less noise and higher flexibility. The proposed design exploits standard PCB manufacturing processes and advanced but now commercial 3D printing processes for the realization of all components. A GitHub repository has been prepared with all files needed to allow the reproduction of the sensor for the interested reader. The whole sensor has been tested with a maximum load equal to 15 N, by showing a sensitivity equal to 0.018 V/N. Moreover, a complete and detailed characterization for the single taxel and the whole pad is reported to show the potentialities of the sensor also in terms of response time, repeatability, hysteresis and signal to noise ratio
