    Get PDF
Gravid wild kutum broodstock, Rutilus frisii kutum, on their upstream migration to Valiabad River (northern Iran) were kept in captivity to allow them to ovulate (captive ripe). Then the impact of captivity on some reproductive and physiological parameters (i.e., plasma cortisol and glucose levels, fertilization percentage, gonadosomatic index and fecundity) were assessed and results were compared with those obtained from naturally ovulated broodstock (ripe). Plasma cortisol level was not significantly different between gravid and captive ripe broodstock but was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that in ripe group. Glucose level was significantly higher (P<0.05) in captive ripe compared to that in ripe or gravid groups. Mean gonadosomatic index, fecundity, and fertilization rate did not affect as a result of stress by captivity. Inverse relationship between plasma cortisol levels and fertilization rate was observed

The aim of this study was to investigate microbial pathogens and their antibiotic susceptibility profile in infected diabetic foot ulcers in Iranian patients. This was a one-year cross sectional study on diabetic patients with infected diabetic foot ulcer at Shariati Teaching Hospital, Tehran, Iran. Grade of ulcer was determined by Wagner's criteria. Specimens were obtained from the base of ulcer, deep part of the wound or aspiration and were tested with gram staining and antibacterial susceptibility was determined with both disk diffusion and E-Test methods. Total of 546 pathogens were isolated from 165 ulcers of 149 patients. Gram positive aerobes including Enterococcal species and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (21.4 and 19.4%, respectively) were identified as the most common pathogens followed by Gram negative isolates including Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas-aeruginosa (12.6 and 5.4%, respectively). The majority of wounds were classified as Wagner grades 2 and 3 (15.7 and 75.7%). Appropriate empiric treatment to cover both these Gram positive and Gram negative pathogens is crucially important

    Get PDF
Physiological changes in cortisol, glucose, testosterone and 17b-estradiol levels were studied in Rutilus frisii kutum spawners during transportation in April, 2006. The fish were held in plastic tanks in two treatments 1fish/2L and 1fish/1L sea water in several replications. Their blood was collected at 0, 10, 20, 30 and 60 min after capture. A significant increase in concentration of cortisol and glucose was found with the transport time. Initial levels of cortisol were similar in the two treatments ranging between 480.7±22.34 and 476.6±18.61 ng/ml respectively

    Get PDF
To study infection of Three-Spined Stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus (14 we sampled 530 specimens of the fish during November 2000 till October 2001 in Gomishan Lagoon, southeast of Caspian Sea. The fish were collected using beach seines with 3mm mesh size. The specimens were transferred to lab fresh or fixed in 10% formalin and examined by standard methods. Numbers of parasites for each male or female were recorded and intensity, frequency and prevalence of the parasite for each month and sex were calculated. Maximum infection occurred in late winter and early spring and the maximum number of parasites was 82, obtained from a female fish in early spring

Latent atriofascicular pathway participating in a wide complex tachycardia: Differentiation from ventricular tachycardia

    Get PDF
Accessory pathways with anterograde decremental conduction properties usually are characterized by presence of antegrade preexcitation during atrial pacing. We report a 38-year-old man with frequent episodes of palpitation. No evidence of ventricular preexcitation was seen during sinus rhythm or atrial pacing. All electrophysiologic maneuvers were compatible with an antidromic tachycardia using atriofascicular pathway as the antegrade limb and the atrioventricular nodal pathway as retrograde limb. Radiofrequency ablation at recording site of accessory pathway potential resulted in cure of tachycardia with no recurrence during 3-month follow-up. This report indicated that atriofascicular pathway-mediated tachycardia should be considered in differential diagnosis of all cases of wide complex tachycardia with left bundle branch morphology and left axis. © 2006, The Authors

Electrical control of glass-like dynamics in vanadium dioxide for data storage and processing

    Get PDF
Metal–oxide–semiconductor junctions are the building blocks of modern electronics and can provide a variety of functionalities, from memory to computing. The technology, however, faces constraints in terms of further miniaturization and compatibility with post–von Neumann computing architectures. Manipulation of structural—rather than electronic—states could provide a path to ultrascaled low-power functional devices, but the electrical control of such states is challenging. Here we report electronically accessible long-lived structural states in vanadium dioxide that can provide a scheme for data storage and processing. The states can be arbitrarily manipulated on short timescales and tracked beyond 10,000 s after excitation, exhibiting features similar to glasses. In two-terminal devices with channel lengths down to 50 nm, sub-nanosecond electrical excitation can occur with an energy consumption as small as 100 fJ. These glass-like functional devices could outperform conventional metal–oxide–semiconductor electronics in terms of speed, energy consumption and miniaturization, as well as provide a route to neuromorphic computation and multilevel memories

Immunosuppressive effect of pregnant mouse serum on allostimulatory activity of dendritic cells

In normal pregnancy, the maternal immune system is directed towards tolerance or suppression in order to prevent rejection of the semi-allogenic fetus. Antigen-presenting cells, especially dendritic cells (DCs), are key cells in initiation and regulation of immune responses. The presence of potent immunostimulatory DCs in the decidual tissue of pregnancy has been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to determine how allostimulatory activity of DCs could be affected during pregnancy. DCs were isolated from spleen of pregnant or non-pregnant Balb/c mice and co-cultured with allogenic T lymphocytes prepared from brachial lymph nodes of C57BL/6 mice. Some cultures of non-pregnant female DCs were treated by 2.5 serum obtained from pregnant mice at early, middle or late gestational periods, and were used in the same mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) settings. Cell proliferation was measured by 3H-thymidine incorporation, and cytokine production measured in supernatants of MLR cultures using ELISA. The effect of pregnant mouse serum on expression of DC surface markers was evaluated by flow cytometry. No significant difference was found between stimulatory potential of splenic DCs from pregnant and non-pregnant mice in induction of allogenic T cell proliferative response. Moreover, serum of early or late pregnancy did not have any effect on DC function in comparison with non-pregnant mouse serum, while mid-pregnancy serum significantly inhibited allostimulatory activity of DCs. IFNγ production in co-culture of DCs treated with pregnant mouse serum was significantly lower than that of the control group; however, no significant difference in IL-10 production was observed. Treatment of DCs with pregnant mouse serum did not influence the percentage of cells expressing MHC-II, CD86, CD8α or CD11b. However, a marked reduction of the mean fluorescence intensity of MHC-II was observed. Collectively, our results concerning the diminished capacity of DCs to induce production of Th1 cytokines and allogenic T cell proliferation after treatment with pregnant mouse serum reveal a new way of immunologic tolerance against the semi-allogenic fetus. © 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Predictors of venous obstruction following pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implantation: A contrast venographic study on 100 patients admitted for generator change, lead revision, or device upgrade

    Get PDF
Aim: Venous obstruction following transvenous device implantation rarely cause immediate clinical problems. When lead revision or device upgrade is indicated, venous obstruction become a significant challenge. The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of venous obstruction after transvenous device implantation, and to asess likely effects of antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs in preventing venous thrombosis. Methods and results: Between March 2005 and July 2006, contrast venography was performed in 100 patients who were candidates for generator change, lead revision, or device upgrade. Vessel patency was graded as either completely obstructed, partially obstructed (>70), or patent. The incidence of venous obstruction was 26, with 9 of patients having total obstruction and 17 of patients exhibiting partial obstruction. No statistically significant differences between obstructed and non-obstructed patients were seen for age, sex, indication for device implantation, atrial fibrillation, cardiothoracic ratio, insulation material, operative technique, device type, and manufacturer (all Ps > 0.05). In a univariate analysis, multiple leads (P = 0.033), and presence of dilated cardiomyopathy (P = 0.036) were associated with higher risk of venous obstruction, whereas anticoagulant/ antiplatelet therapy (P = 0.047) significantly reduced incidence of venous obstruction. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that only number of the leads (P = 0.039, OR: 2.22, and 95 CI: 1.03-4.76) and antiplatelet/anticoagulant therapy (P = 0.044, OR: 2.79, and 95 CI: 0.98-7.96) were predictors of venous obstruction. Conclusion: Total or partial obstruction of the access veins occurs relatively frequently after pacemaker or ICD implantation. Multiple pacing or ICD leads are associated with an increased risk of venous obstruction, whereas antiplatelet/anticoagulant therapy appears to have a preventive effect on development of access vein thrombosis. © The European Society of Cardiology 2007. Masonry compressive strength prediction using artificial neural networks

    Get PDF
The masonry is not only included among the oldest building materials, but it is also the most widely used material due to its simple construction and low cost compared to the other modern building materials. Nevertheless, there is not yet a robust quantitative method, available in the literature, which can reliably predict its strength, based on the geometrical and mechanical characteristics of its components. This limitation is due to the highly nonlinear relation between the compressive strength of masonry and the geometrical and mechanical properties of the components of the masonry. In this paper, the application of artificial neural networks for predicting the compressive strength of masonry has been investigated. Specifically, back-propagation neural network models have been used for predicting the compressive strength of masonry prism based on experimental data available in the literature. The comparison of the derived results with the experimental findings demonstrates the ability of artificial neural networks to approximate the compressive strength of masonry walls in a reliable and robust manner.- (undefined
