    Quantification of Head Acceleration Events in Rugby League: An Instrumented Mouthguard and Video Analysis Pilot Study

    Instrumented mouthguards (iMG) were used to collect head acceleration events (HAE) in men’s professional rugby league matches. Peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak angular acceleration (PAA) and peak change in angular velocity (∆PAV) were collected using custom-fit iMG set with a 5 g single iMG-axis recording threshold. iMG were fitted to ten male Super League players for thirty-one player matches. Video analysis was conducted on HAE to identify the contact event; impacted player; tackle stage and head loading type. A total of 1622 video-verified HAE were recorded. Approximately three-quarters of HAE (75.7%) occurred below 10 g. Most (98.2%) HAE occurred during tackles (59.3% to tackler; 40.7% to ball carrier) and the initial collision stage of the tackle (43.9%). The initial collision stage resulted in significantly greater PAA and ∆PAV than secondary contact and play the ball tackle stages (p &lt; 0.001). Indirect HAE accounted for 29.8% of HAE and resulted in significantly greater ∆PAV (p &lt; 0.001) than direct HAE, but significantly lower PLA (p &lt; 0.001). Almost all HAE were sustained in the tackle, with the majority occurring during the initial collision stage, making it an area of focus for the development of player protection strategies for both ball carriers and tacklers. League-wide and community-level implementation of iMG could enable a greater understanding of head acceleration exposure between playing positions, cohorts, and levels of play.</p

    Improved bioavailability of timolol maleate via transdermal transfersomal gel: Statistical optimization, characterization, and pharmacokinetic assessment

    AbstractTimolol maleate (TiM), a nonselective β-adrenergic blocker, is a potent highly effective agent for management of hypertension. The drug suffers from extensive first pass effect, resulting in a reduction of oral bioavailability (F%) to 50% and a short elimination half-life of 4h; parameters necessitating its frequent administration. The current study was therefore, designed to formulate and optimize the transfersomal TiM gel for transdermal delivery. TiM loaded transfersomal gel was optimized using two 23 full factorial designs; where the effects of egg phosphatidyl choline (PC): surfactant (SAA) molar ratio, solvent volumetric ratio, and the drug amount were evaluated. The formulation variables; including particle size, drug entrapment efficiency (%EE), and release rate were characterized. The optimized transfersomal gel was prepared with 4.65:1 PC:SAA molar ratio, 3:1 solvent volumetric ratio, and 13mg drug amount with particle size of 2.722μm, %EE of 39.96%, and a release rate of 134.49μg/cm2/h. The permeation rate of the optimized formulation through the rat skin was excellent (151.53μg/cm2/h) and showed four times increase in relative bioavailability with prolonged plasma profile up to 72h compared with oral aqueous solution.     Cooling is an essential part of greenhouse climate control in warm climates. There are three types of cooling technique: natural ventilation, evaporative cooling and mechanical cooling. Natural ventilation can only be applied when the outside temperature does not exceed 35°C and the average daily temperature is not higher than 22°C. Above these temperatures, production will be negatively affected. Evaporative cooling can be applied when the dew-point temperature of the outside air is less than these limits. These methods of cooling work effectively in arid regions, though the water consumption is high. The third method of cooling demands a cold surface to remove the latent and sensible heat from the greenhouse. This method has been applied in the current research. This method allows optimal control of the greenhouse climate in terms of temperature and humidity, but also in terms of carbon dioxide concentration. The amount of cooling capacity required depends on the amount of solar radiation being absorbed in the greenhouse and the convective heat transfer from outside, provided the outside temperature is higher than the greenhouse air temperature. The experiment showed that roughly 50% of the solar radiation has to be cooled from the greenhouse in order to maintain its temperature. Sixty per cent of the heat being absorbed in the greenhouse is transformed into latent heat through the transpiration of the crop. The system was able to maintain the preset temperature and humidity for the greenhouse air.</p
