Polyfluorene as a model system for space-charge-limited conduction
Ethyl-hexyl substituted polyfluorene (PF) with its high level of molecular
disorder can be described very well by one-carrier space-charge-limited
conduction for a discrete set of trap levels with energy 0.5 eV above
the valence band edge. Sweeping the bias above the trap-filling limit in the
as-is polymer generates a new set of exponential traps, which is clearly seen
in the density of states calculations. The trapped charges in the new set of
traps have very long lifetimes and can be detrapped by photoexcitation. Thermal
cycling the PF film to a crystalline phase prevents creation of additional

Investigation of passive flow control techniques to enhance the stall characteristics of a microlight aircraft
This report investigates the enhancement of aerodynamic stall characteristics of a Skyranger microlight aircraft by the use of passive flow control techniques, namely vortex generators and turbulators. Each flow control device is designed and scaled to application conditions. Force balance measurements and surface oil flow visualisation are carried out on a half-model of the microlight to further investigate the nature of the flow on the aircraft with and without the flow control devices. The results indicate a clear advantage to the use of turbulators compared with vortex generators. Turbulators increased the maximum lift coefficient by 2.8%, delayed the onset of stall by increasing the critical angle by 17.6% and reduced the drag penalty at both lower (pre-stall) and higher angles of attack by 8% compared to vortex generators. With vortex generators applied, the results indicated a delayed stall with an increase in the critical angle by 2% and a reduced drag penalty at higher angles of attack
X-ray observations of highly obscured Ï_(9.7 ÎŒm) > 1 sources: an efficient method for selecting Compton-thick AGN?
Observations with the IRS spectrograph onboard Spitzer have found many sources with very deep Si features at 9.7 ÎŒm, that have optical depths of Ï > 1. Since it is believed that a few of these systems in the local Universe are associated with Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (hereafter AGN), we set out to investigate whether the presence of a strong Si absorption feature is a good indicator of a heavily obscured AGN. We compile X-ray spectroscopic observations available in the literature on the optically-thick (Ï_(9.7 ÎŒm) > 1) sources from the 12 ÎŒm IRAS Seyfert sample. We find that the majority of the high-Ï optically confirmed Seyferts (six out of nine)
in the 12 ÎŒm sample are probably Compton-thick. Thus, we provide direct evidence of a connection between mid-IR optically-thick galaxies and Compton-thick AGN, with the success rate being close to 70% in the local Universe. This is at least comparable to, if not better than, other rates obtained with photometric information in the mid to far-IR, or even mid-IR to X-rays. However, this technique cannot provide complete Compton-thick AGN samples, i.e., there are many Compton-thick AGN that do not display significant Si
absorption, with the most notable example being NGC1068. After assessing the validity of the high 9.7 ÎŒm optical-depth technique in the local Universe, we attempt to construct a sample of candidate Compton-thick AGN at higher redshifts. We compile a sample of seven high-Ï Spitzer sources in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) and five in the Spitzer First-Look Survey.
All these have been selected to have no PAH features (EW_(6.2 ÎŒm) 10^(42) erg s^(â1)) of the detected GOODS sources corroborates that these are AGN. For FLS, ancillary optical spectroscopy reveals hidden nuclei in two more sources. SED fitting can support the presence of an AGN in the vast majority of sources. Owing to the limited photon statistics, we cannot derive useful constraints from X-ray spectroscopy on whether these sources are Compton-thick. However, the low L_(X)/L_(6 ÎŒm) luminosity ratios, suggest that at least four out of the six detected sources in GOODS may be associated with Compton-thick AGN
Behaviour and process in the formation of the North European Acheulean record: Towards a Unified Palaeolithic Landscape Approach
The Acheulean record of northern France and southern Britain has long been acknowledged as internationally important, having played an important historical role in the development of the discipline. Abundant artefacts have been recovered, primarily from fluvial gravel archives, allowing the responses of Middle Pleistocene human populations on the edge of their geographical distribution to be interrogated. The richness of the record from such deposits can most simply be read as reflecting absolute population numbers â and changes in this over time. However, factors such as regional super-abundance of high quality flint (related to solid geology) and intensity of aggregate exploitation also played their part in generating the apparently regionally dense record of finds. This paper investigates the inter-related patterns of human behaviour, preservation, artefact release and research tradition which underpin these basic distribution maps. We here present a framework for understanding the processes which have created the current distribution map â in terms of where we find material, and which periods are best represented within it. We term this the Unified Palaeolithic Landscape Approach and outline ways in which the spatial and temporal range of the Acheulean record can be addressed through the archaeological record of its heartland
Algorithmic Debugging of Real-World Haskell Programs: Deriving Dependencies from the Cost Centre Stack
Existing algorithmic debuggers for Haskell require a transformation of all modules in a program, even libraries that the user does not want to debug and which may use language features not supported by the debugger. This is a pity, because a promising ap- proach to debugging is therefore not applicable to many real-world programs. We use the cost centre stack from the Glasgow Haskell Compiler profiling environment together with runtime value observations as provided by the Haskell Object Observation Debugger (HOOD) to collect enough information for algorithmic debugging. Program annotations are in suspected modules only. With this technique algorithmic debugging is applicable to a much larger set of Haskell programs. This demonstrates that for functional languages in general a simple stack trace extension is useful to support tasks such as profiling and debugging
Quantum coherence and carriers mobility in organic semiconductors
We present a model of charge transport in organic molecular semiconductors
based on the effects of lattice fluctuations on the quantum coherence of the
electronic state of the charge carrier. Thermal intermolecular phonons and
librations tend to localize pure coherent states and to assist the motion of
less coherent ones. Decoherence is thus the primary mechanism by which
conduction occurs. It is driven by the coupling of the carrier to the molecular
lattice through polarization and transfer integral fluctuations as described by
the hamiltonian of Gosar and Choi. Localization effects in the quantum coherent
regime are modeled via the Anderson hamiltonian with correlated diagonal and
non-diagonal disorder leading to the determination of the carrier localization
length. This length defines the coherent extension of the ground state and
determines, in turn, the diffusion range in the incoherent regime and thus the
mobility. The transfer integral disorder of Troisi and Orlandi can also be
incorporated. This model, based on the idea of decoherence, allowed us to
predict the value and temperature dependence of the carrier mobility in
prototypical organic semiconductors that are in qualitative accord with
experiments
