Mediastinal lymphangioma

47-year-old women was admitted to the clinic for diagnosis of an incidentally X-ray detected enlargement of the medistinum shadow. In the past, the patient had been operated for lymphangioma of the right forearm. Chest computer tomography (CT) showed an abnormal mass in the front mediastinum with spherical structures, which density could indicate high-protein contents. In the right mammarian gland an oval cyst (23-15 mm), similar in character to the lesion in the mediastinum was found. The lymphangiomatic character of the lesion with the extension up to the superior aperture of the thorax was confirmed with magnetic resonans imaging (MRI).Duetothe extensive changes and lack of symptoms, the patient was disqualified for surgical treatment and remains under further observation

W artykule punktem wyjściowym uczyniono teoretyczną analizę zjawiska ideologii i utopii na podstawie klasycznego dzieła socjologicznego Karola Mannheima, które skonfrontowano następnie z koncepcją Szemuela N. Eisenstadta przedstawioną w eseju O jakobińskim komponencie ruchów fundamentalistycznych. Powstała w ten sposób synteza stanowi model teoretyczny przydatny do prześledzenia owego „elementu jakobińskiego” występującego w niektórych ruchach społecznych. Zaproponowano badanie świeckich ruchów społecznych z pominięciem ruchów religijnych. W ramach analizy nurtów świeckich uwzględniono ruchy anarchistyczne oraz feministyczne. W konkluzji wskazano, że po pierwsze, zarówno wątki ideologiczne, jak też utopijne nie są obce różnym strukturom wiedzy i działaniom społecznym, procesom intelektualnym oraz społecznym, po drugie, wiedza społeczna generowana, dystrybuowana i umacniana w rozmaitych i różniących się od siebie środowiskach społecznych ma w gruncie rzeczy podobne źródła, struktury i genezę.The starting point of the paper makes a theoretical analysis of the phenomena of ideology and utopia from the classical opus by Karl Mannheim, which has been consequently confronted by the ideas from the Shmuel N. Eisenstadt treatise The Jacobin Component Of Fundamentalist Movements. The following synthesis represents the theoretical model that can be used to follow the aforementioned “Jacobin component” in social movements, which seem to be fundamentally divergent. Different secular movements have been analyzed along similar critical lines. Opposite movements were selected for this analysis. Among secular movements there are anarchist and feminist movements. In conclusion, the indications are that, firstly both ideological and utopian stands are no strangers to divergent social knowledge structures, social action, intellectual and social processes. The second one underlines the fact that social knowledge, which is generated, distributed and sustained in diverse and divergent social environments, has actually similar sources, origins and structure

Statistics of skewness and kurtosis of small measurement samples from populations of normal and few other distributions

Przedstawiono podstawowe właściwości statystyczne rozkładów skośności i kurtozy dla zbioru próbek o określonych małych liczbach elementów. Rozkłady te wyznaczono je metodą Monte Carlo. Próbki wielokrotnie pobierano losowo z populacji o rozkładzie normalnym oraz dla porównania z populacji o kilku innych prostych rozkładach. Znajomość statystyk skośności i kurtozy umożliwi bardziej wiarygodne oszacowanie odchylenia standardowego i niepewności estymatora wartości mensurandu z próbek pomiarowych o małej liczbie obserwacji, gdy znany jest rozstęp populacji rozrzutu ich wartości.Statistics of skewness and kurtosis distributions and their basic parameters for a set of samples of certain small numbers of elements are find. These distributions were determined using the Monte Carlo method. The samples were repeatedly taken at random from a normally distributed population and for comparison from the population of a few other simple distributions. Knowledge of skewness and kurtosis statistics allow a more reliable estimate of the standard deviation and the uncertainty of the value of the measurand estimator from the measurement samples of a small number of observations, when the range of their value distribution is known

Shifted up cosine as probability density function - properties and application examples

Omówiono niekonwencjonalny rozkład gęstości prawdopodobieństwa (PDF) w postaci jednego okresu cosinusoidy przesuniętej w górę i o polu równym 1 jako alternatywę rozkładu Normalnego (funkcji Gaussa). Wykazano, że w przedziale š2,5 odchylenia standardowego cosinusoida przesunięta o jej amplitudę A - funkcja 2Acos2(•), nie odbiega od rozkładu Normalnego więcej niż o š2,1%. Dla rzeczywistych wyników pomiarów o ograniczonym zakresie rozrzutu uzyskuje się mniejszą niepewność typu A niż według międzynarodowego Przewodnika GUM. Rozważania teoretyczne i symulacje poparto przykładem z praktyki metrologicznej. Rozkład COS2 można z powodzeniem stosować do szybkiego szacowania niepewności pomiarów, w tym do automatyzacji tych obliczeń oraz w statystyce.Unconventional probability density distribution function (PDF) of the form of the one period of cosine function shifted up and of its area under curve equal of 1 is proposed as an alternative to Normal distribution, i.e. Gauss function. It is presented that if a cosine function is shifted up by its amplitude A, such function (2Acos2(•)), can be applied as approximation of the central part of Normal PDF (š2,5 of its standard deviation) with the accuracy not lower then 2,1%. In reality the distribution of measurements is always of limited range and uncertainty type A obtained by COS2 PDF is smaller than recommended by international Guide GUM [1]. Analysed data from experiment and simulated data confirmed that new proposed unconventional distribution has an advantage of a lowering uncertainty interval by comparison to Gaussian distribution at the same level of confidence, and calculations are simpler and faster. COS2 distribution can be successfully applied for the fast uncertainty evaluation of measurements, for its automation and in statistics
