Voltage regulator for battery power source
A bipolar transistor in series with the battery as the control element also in series with a zener diode and a resistor is used to maintain a predetermined voltage until the battery voltage decays to very nearly the predetermined voltage. A field effect transistor between the base of the bipolar transistor and a junction between the zener diode and resistor regulates base current of the bipolar transistor, thereby regulating the conductivity of the bipolar transistor for control of the output voltage
Power converter
A dc-to-dc converter employs four transistor switches in a bridge to chop dc power from a source, and a voltage multiplying diode rectifying ladder network to rectify and filter the chopped dc power for delivery to a load. The bridge switches are cross coupled in order for diagonally opposite pairs to turn on and off together using RC networks for the cross coupling to achieve the mode of operation of a free running multivibrator, and the diode rectifying ladder is configured to operate in a push-pull mode driven from opposite sides of the multivibrator outputs of the ridge switches. The four transistor switches provide a square-wave output voltage which as a peak-to-peak amplitude that is twice the input dc voltage, and is thus useful as a dc-to-ac inverter
Window comparator
A window comparator is described, comprising two operational amplifiers, one with two feedback circuits, each feedback circuit having a diode connected to the amplifier output and poled for forward current conduction of opposite polarity, to provide an algebraic difference between an input signal and a selected set-point voltage. Differential input terminals of the second operational amplifier were connected to the separate feedback circuits of the first operational amplifier, one input terminal to the output of one diode, and the other to the output of the other diode. A selected window-width voltage was connected through a coupling resistor to one of the input terminals of the second operational amplifier to determine when the algebraic difference of the input signal and the setpoint voltage has exceeded a predetermined tolerance after that difference has changed signs
Full wave modulator-demodulator amplifier apparatus
A full-wave modulator-demodulator apparatus is described including an operational amplifier having a first input terminal coupled to a circuit input terminal, and a second input terminal alternately coupled to the circuit input terminal. A circuit is ground by a switching circuit responsive to a phase reference signal and the operational amplifier is alternately switched between a non-inverting mode and an inverting mode. The switching circuit includes three field-effect transistors operatively associated to provide the desired switching function in response to an alternating reference signal of the same frequency as an AC input signal applied to the circuit input terminal
Study of Scalar Mesons and Related Radiative Decays
After a brief review of the puzzling light scalar meson sector of QCD, a
brief summary will be given of a paper concerning radiative decays involving
the light scalars. There, a simple vector meson dominance model is constructed
in an initial attempt to relate a large number of the radiative decays
involving a putative scalar nonet to each other. As an application it is
illustrated why mixing is not expected to greatly alter the
production ratio for radiative decays.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, Talk presented at SUNYIT (Utica/NY) conference on

MODELING OF AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS
The authors present an overview of agricultural systems models. Beginning with why systems are modeled and for what purposes, the paper examines types of agricultural systems and associated model types. The broad categories range from pictorial (iconic) models to descriptive analogue models to symbolic (usually mathematical) models. The uses of optimization versus non-optimizing mechanistic models are reviewed, as are the scale and aggregation challenges associated with scaling up from the plant cell to the landscape or from a farm enterprise to a world market supply-demand equilibrium Recent modeling developments include the integration of formerly stand-alone biophysical simulation models, increasingly with a unifying spatial database and often for the purpose of supporting management decisions. Current modeling innovations are estimating and incorporating environmental values and other system interactions. At the community and regional scale, sociological and economic models of rural community structure are being developed to evaluate long-term community viability. The information revolution is bringing new challenges in delivering agricultural systems models over the internet, as well as integrating decision support systems with the new precision agriculture technologies.Farm Management,
The Effects of Prehydration on Cement Performance
This study investigated the effects of cement prehydration on cement’s engineering properties. Anhydrous cement was exposed over a saturated KCl solution to maintain 85% RH, for 7 and 28 days. Mortar and cement pastes were tested for strength, workability and setting time, with sample analysis by XRD and DTA. Results showed a decreased reactivity of the prehydrated cements resulting in reduced strength and increased setting times. We propose that this may be due to an upset of the sulphate balance in the cement upon prehydration
A benign, low Z electron capture agent for negative ion TPCs
We have identified nitromethane (CHNO) as an effective electron
capture agent for negative ion TPCs (NITPCs).
We present drift velocity and longitudinal diffusion measurements for
negative ion gas mixtures using nitromethane as the capture agent.
Not only is nitromethane substantially more benign than the only other
identified capture agent, CS, but its low atomic number will enable the use
of the NITPC as a photoelectric X{}-ray polarimeter in the 1{}-10 keV band
Use of cohesive elements in fatigue analysis
Cohesive laws describe the resistance to incipient separation
of material surfaces. A cohesive finite element
is formulated on the basis of a particular cohesive
law. Cohesive elements are placed at the boundary
between adjacent standard volume finite elements
to model fatigue damage that leads to fracture at the
separation of the element boundaries per the cohesive
law. In this work, a cohesive model for fatigue
crack initiation is taken to be the irreversible loadingunloading
hysteresis that represents fatigue damage
occuring due to cyclic loads leading to the initiation of
small cracks. Various cohesive laws are reviewed and
one is selected that incorporates a hysteretic cyclic
loading that accounts for energetic dissipative mechanisms.
A mathematical representation is developed
based on an exponential effective load-separation cohesive
relationship. A three-dimensional cohesive element
is defined using this compliance relationship integrated
at four points on the mid-surface of the area
element. Implementation into finite element software
is discussed and particular attention is applied to numerical
convergence issues as the inflection point between
loading and 'unloading in the cohesive law is
encountered. A simple example of a displacementcontrolled
fatigue test is presented in a finite element
simulation. Comments are made on applications of
the method to prediction of fatigue life for engineering
structures such as pressure vessels and piping
