Nonsingular change of assembly mode without any cusp
International audienceThis paper shows for the first time a parallel manipulator that can execute nonsingular changes of assembly modes while its joint space is free of cusp points and cuspidal edges. The manipulator at hand has two degrees of freedom and is derived from a 3-RPR manipulator; the shape of its joint space is a thickening of a figure-eight curve. A few explanations concerning the relationship between cusps and alpha curves are given
Characterizing star formation activity in infrared dark cloud MSXDC G048.65-00.29
Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs), condensed regions of the ISM with high column
densities, low temperatures and high masses, are suspected sites of star
formation. Thousands of IRDCs have already been identified. To date, it has not
been resolved whether IRDCs always show star formation activity and, if so, if
massive star formation (> 8 solar masses) is the rule or the exception in
IRDCs. Previous analysis of sub-millimeter cores in the cloud MSXDC
G048.65-00.29 (G48.65) indicates embedded star formation activity. To
characterize this activity in detail, mid-infrared photometry (3-30 micron) has
been obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. This paper analyzes the point
sources seen in the 24 micron band, combined with counterparts or upper limits
at shorter and longer wavelengths. Data points in wavelength bands ranging from
1 up to 850 micron are used to compare each 24 micron source to a set of
Spectral Energy Distributions of Young Stellar Object (YSO) models. By
assessing the models that fit the data, an attempt is made to identify YSOs as
such and determine their evolutionary stages and stellar masses. A total of 17
sources are investigated, 13 of which are classified as YSOs, primarily - but
not exclusively - in an early embedded phase of star formation. The modeled
masses of the central stellar objects range from sub-solar to ~8 solar masses.
Every YSO is at less than 1 pc projected distance from its nearest YSO
neighbor. We conclude that IRDC G48.65 is a region of active star formation. We
find YSOs in various evolutionary phases, indicating that the star formation in
this cloud is not an instantaneous process. The inferred masses of the central
objects suggest that this IRDC hosts only low to intermediate mass YSOs and
none with masses exceeding ~8 solar masses.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; v2: minor editorial changes to match published

Starting a Streaming Video Program on a Limited Budget
Streaming videos are a desirable supplement to physical DVDs, but academic libraries may feel intimidated by the cost of adding another format to their collections. However, streaming videos can be surprisingly affordable. In the midst of a budget crunch, the librarians at Western Carolina University were able to start a streaming video program, first by selecting titles à la carte, and later by launching two streaming services, Kanopy (using a demand-driven acquisitions model) and Swank (using a mediated acquisitions model). These streaming videos allow for unlimited simultaneous access by local users as well as distance-education students, and they come with performance rights that help teaching faculty prevent copyright infringement. Despite some limitations with streaming videos, the format has been well received by faculty, students, and staff
Nowhere minimal CR submanifolds and Levi-flat hypersurfaces
A local uniqueness property of holomorphic functions on real-analytic nowhere
minimal CR submanifolds of higher codimension is investigated. A sufficient
condition called almost minimality is given and studied. A weaker necessary
condition, being contained a possibly singular real-analytic Levi-flat
hypersurface is studied and characterized. This question is completely resolved
for algebraic submanifolds of codimension 2 and a sufficient condition for
noncontainment is given for non algebraic submanifolds. As a consequence, an
example of a submanifold of codimension 2, not biholomorphically equivalent to
an algebraic one, is given. We also investigate the structure of singularities
of Levi-flat hypersurfaces.Comment: 21 pages; conjecture 2.8 was removed in proof; to appear in J. Geom.

Remarks on Legendrian Self-Linking
The Thurston-Bennequin invariant provides one notion of self-linking for any
homologically-trivial Legendrian curve in a contact three-manifold. Here we
discuss related analytic notions of self-linking for Legendrian knots in
Euclidean space. Our definition is based upon a reformulation of the elementary
Gauss linking integral and is motivated by ideas from supersymmetric gauge
theory. We recover the Thurston-Bennequin invariant as a special case.Comment: 42 pages, many figures; v2: minor revisions, published versio
Reference Standards for Body Fat Measure Using GE Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry in Caucasian Adults
Background Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is an established technique for the measurement of body composition. Reference values for these variables, particularly those related to fat mass, are necessary for interpretation and accurate classification of those at risk for obesityrelated health complications and in need of lifestyle modifications (diet, physical activity, etc.). Currently, there are no reference values available for GE-Healthcare DXA systems and it is known that whole-body and regional fat mass measures differ by DXA manufacturer.
Objective To develop reference values by age and sex for DXA-derived fat mass measurements with GE-Healthcare systems.
Methods A de-identified sample of 3,327 participants (2,076 women, 1,251 men) was obtained from Ball State University\u27s Clinical Exercise Physiology Laboratory and University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee\u27s Physical Activity & Health Research Laboratory. All scans were completed using a GE Lunar Prodigy or iDXA and data reported included percent body fat (%BF), fat mass index (FMI), and ratios of android-to-gynoid (A/G), trunk/limb, and trunk/leg fat measurements. Percentiles were calculated and a factorial ANOVA was used to determine differences in the mean values for each variable between age and sex.
Results Normative reference values for fat mass variables from DXA measurements obtained from GE-Healthcare DXA systems are presented as percentiles for both women and men in 10- year age groups. Women had higher (p\u3c0.01) mean %BF and FMI than men, whereas men had higher (p\u3c0.01) mean ratios of A/G, trunk/limb, and trunk/leg fat measurements than women
The youngest massive protostars in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We demonstrate the unique capabilities of Herschel to study very young
luminous extragalactic young stellar objects (YSOs) by analyzing a central
strip of the Large Magellanic Cloud obtained through the HERITAGE Science
Demonstration Program. We combine PACS 100 and 160, and SPIRE 250, 350, and 500
microns photometry with 2MASS (1.25-2.17 microns) and Spitzer IRAC and MIPS
(3.6-70 microns) to construct complete spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of
compact sources. From these, we identify 207 candidate embedded YSOs in the
observed region, ~40% never-before identified. We discuss their position in
far-infrared color-magnitude space, comparing with previously studied,
spectroscopically confirmed YSOs and maser emission. All have red colors
indicating massive cool envelopes and great youth. We analyze four example
YSOs, determining their physical properties by fitting their SEDs with
radiative transfer models. Fitting full SEDs including the Herschel data
requires us to increase the size and mass of envelopes included in the models.
This implies higher accretion rates (greater than or equal to 0.0001 M_sun/yr),
in agreement with previous outflow studies of high-mass protostars. Our results
show that Herschel provides reliable longwave SEDs of large samples of
high-mass YSOs; discovers the youngest YSOs whose SEDs peak in Herschel bands;
and constrains the physical properties and evolutionary stages of YSOs more
precisely than was previously possible.Comment: Main text: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; Online material: 3 figures, 1
