Introduction We examine the redshift space distortions in the density field of the IRAS PSCz redshift survey using a spherical harmonic analysis. This analysis not only complements the almost all-sky survey geometry, but also the purely radial nature of the distortion. We apply the methods of Heavens and Taylor (1995) 1 (hereafter HT) and Ballinger, Heavens and Taylor (1995) 2 (BHT), with minor improvements, to determine the parameter fi =\Omega 0:6 =b as well as the real space power spectrum of IRAS galaxies. The PSCz survey represents the most useful data set on which to perform this analysis as it is the largest, deepest all-sky redshift survey to data. 2 The IRAS PSCz redshift survey The recently completed IRAS PSCz survey is a redshift survey of all galaxies detected by the IRAS satellite to a flux of 0:6Jy at<F
